Review: Faking It by Cora Carmack

Synopsis

Mackenzie “Max” Miller has a problem. Her parents have arrived in town for a surprise visit, and if they see her dyed hair, tattoos, and piercings, they just might disown her. Even worse, they’re expecting to meet a nice, wholesome boyfriend, not a guy named Mace who has a neck tattoo and plays in a band. All her lies are about to come crashing down around her, but then she meets Cade.

Cade moved to Philadelphia to act and to leave his problems behind in Texas. So far though, he’s kept the problems and had very little opportunity to take the stage. When Max approaches him in a coffee shop with a crazy request to pretend to be her boyfriend, he agrees to play the part. But when Cade plays the role a little too well, they’re forced to keep the ruse going. And the more they fake the relationship, the more real it begins to feel.

4 star review

Cade was Bliss’s best friend in Losing It , but he lost Bliss to Garrick, their theatre professor.  Cade’s heart was crushed.  He thought he could escape the pain and now he is in theatre graduate school.  He hates his new life…his apartment is a ghetto, he’s the youngest in the graduate program and has very little experience, he’s had to make new friends in this new town, which also happens to be the same town that Bliss and Garrick live.

“You would think I’d be used to it by now.  That it wouldn’t feel like a rusty eggbeater to the heart every time I saw them together.”

It is during one of his coffee dates with Bliss and Garrick that he happens upon a great acting opportunity.  Cade is a very good actor.  He’s been able to convince Bliss that he is over her.  Now he gets the chance to continue his education with another relationship pretense.

Max is blaming herself for her sister’s death and feels as if she has wasted her life being somebody she isn’t.  She was fitting into the perfect-child mold that her sister left behind, but that isn’t Max.  Max is all about music.  Max’s parents don’t agree with the lifestyle that Max has chosen and is going to cut off her money if she doesn’t change her ways and stop with the music and continue with college.

This turns out to be the best performance of Cade’s life, but it’s also turning out to be real-life drama.  He is moving forward with his quest to move on from Bliss and would like to further his relationship with Max. The only catch is Max won’t accept that she has feelings for Cade and she also has a boyfriend (forgive me for calling this guy a loser).

“I seemed to be incapable of finding a girl who wasn’t taken.”

In Losing It, I have to admit I wasn’t a big fan of Cade.  He was a nice guy and a good friend to Bliss, but I saw him as weak.  He didn’t fight for Bliss, but rather walked away.  Turns out Cade doesn’t fight for anything.  He “lets people go.”  But this time around he’s stronger and is going to fight for the girl.  I was so glad to see Cade grow in his strength and assurance that he is capable of earning the trust and love from somebody who doesn’t readily show it.  He wasn’t going to walk away this time and he was going to fight for Max.  Yeah for Cade!!

“I understood that she was unsure, but I couldn’t take this anymore.”

By the end of the book I was a true Cade fan.  I feel bad that I didn’t give him an opportunity in the first book.  Amazing how once we get to know a character better how much we missed out on the first time.  My heart broke for Cade.  I felt bad for his personal loss in life, I felt bad that he was not happy in his life, and I felt bad that he lost the girl.  I had to cheer him on this time around.  How could I not…he’s “GOLDEN BOY!”
