Team Player

I love anthologies-there’s usually so many that if one just doesn’t isn’t for you, you’re bound to connect with a few others.

LJ Shen’s The End Zone is a friends to lovers romance. Jolie Louis is hot shot quarterback Gabe Poirier’s best friend. She opened up her heart and her life to him ten years ago when he moved next door. It didn’t take long for her to realize he lived with an abusive, alcoholic father. She was his rescuer and they remained each other’s person. She might secretly want more with him, but Gabe is a major player on and off the team and she’s not looking to get her heart broken, yet alone complicate things with their friendship when it all goes wrong.

This author is a fav of mine and this one held my attention. There was some drama at the end that seemed to be rushed and out of place, considering Gabe was so in love with Jolie. That plot seemed out of place and awkward but overall it’s still a solid 4 star read for me.

Rochelle Paige is up next with a hockey romance- Slapped Into Love.

Ryan Forrester plays hockey alongside characters from previous books by Ms. Paige. He had a one night stand several months ago that has ruined him for any off the ice activity with the more than willing puck bunnies that surround him. But considering he didn't get any contact info on his bedmate, he's out of luck. Or so he thinks. Turns out the new skating coach hired to improve the team's skating speed is Tamara Antonov, an Olympic gold medalist. Seeing Ryan again, throws Tamara off balance too. But Ryan isn't about to lose his chance to see if the two of them can work out of the bedroom.

Full Court Press
Kennedy Ryan’s story takes a bad boy basketball player, Decker and a female reporter, Avery who had a brief encounter with each other. Their story is one of lost opportunity and what if’s.
Ten years after they first met their lives intersect again. Decker is now divorced and Avery’s long-term relationship is over. Both have regrets and wonder if they missed out on something special together. Both are struggling with the changes that being single have brought to their lives.
3.5 stars

Ella Fox’s Out of Formation is a stepbrother romance. Elena is a senior in college and is a star cheerleader. Her coach has just been let go and her stepbrother Colin Findlay is temporarily taking on the job. Elena’s fell for him years ago, in spite of the ten-year difference between them. When she was a kid, he was patient with her-she knew she was much too young for him then. But now she’s an adult, and it seems Colin just may return her feelings. This is a fun, steamy read with a story line that flies by and will leave you wanting more!
4 stars

Kate’s Stewart’s Sweeping the Series is one of my favs! Ren is a hotshot ball player and Erica is the woman who has ruined him for any other relationship. It’s a couple of years after they broke up and Ren is out of control. He has anger issues and is a total manwhore. The team needs to shut him down before he brings the team down with him. Erica’s PR company has assigned him as her new client. She doesn’t want to see him again but if she wants to keep her job. Sparks fly, both are resentful of the other and neither one wants to admit that the feelings they once had are still very much present.
This story had such depth and angst and reading both POV’s let me know exactly what was in both minds. They’ve made such mistakes and are so afraid to trust their hearts to the other again. What a fantastic story this turned out to be!

I love to write about enduring love, soul-deep love, in as real a setting as I can make, but with big smooshy HEAs. I believe in diversity, open-mindedness, and inclusion. I like sweetness mixed with steam, love conquering all, and above all, hope. Love always wins.

Love So Wild by Marquita Valentine
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publishing Date: December 13th, 2017

Pilot Elijah Lawson always knew he’d return to Jessamine, marry a hometown girl and settle into very predictable life. After all, he made promises to his parents that once he’d gotten his fill of adventure that he would do exactly that… and Eli was a man of his word. Only he's never been able to get the bewitching redhead he’d fallen hard for two years earlier out of his head and he’s afraid that no woman in Jessamine will ever measure up.
Unfortunately, that doesn’t stop his family from trying to set him up with every single woman in town… until Skye Holland shows up on his doorstep.
The only reason Skye Holland moved back to North Carolina was so she could do the right thing for her one year old son. A boy, after all, needed his father, while she… she simply needed a fresh start. But first, she has to let Eli know that their red-hot affair had consequences. Consequences she has no intentions of repeating, no matter how many old feelings come rushing to the surface when they’re together.
Too bad for Skye that Elijah has other ideas and he’s not going to let this second chance at love get away again.

Review By Trinette Dungee

Elijah Lawson has never been one to let any grass grow under his feet. As a pilot he’s traveled the world and never thought of settling in one place; until he spent a magical few months with Skylar Holland. Skylar snuffed out that desire to travel from place to place. She turned him into a one woman man and he would have been happy to that man had she not up and left him without a trace. For two years Elijah has thought about her and what happened. When Skylar turns up on his doorstep she does show up alone.
Skylar Holland wasn’t the marrying kind. Oh she wanted to be and Elijah Lawson would have been the perfect man. The time she spent with him was the best in her life but haunted by her childhood Skylar knows she’s not what Eli really needs. The decision she made to leave him was really for his own good. Two years later she’s stands in front of him because it’s no longer what best for her or Eli.
This was a quick read. Like many of Marquita’s series, all roads seem to lead to Holland Springs but it seems like this is the first book where and actual full series directly crosses paths with Holland Spring. As with the other Lawson men, Eli knows the woman he want and does everything he can to get her. What I liked about this book was the romantic side of the man. Eli’s heart is clear and his not ashamed to say or admit it.
What didn’t quite work for me was the speed of this book and some of the gaps. It seems one minute Skylar is at Eli’s door saying she doesn’t want or expect an actual relationship and the next, they are knee deep in each other.
There are quite a few references to characters from Love So Irresistible Book #3 in the Lawson Brothers Series and from the Holland Springs Series, which I felt like left a lot of questions. Since I read the other books I was able to fill in the blanks. So although it is said that this book can be read as a stand-alone, I would recommend reading those two series first.
Although the signature romance and sweetness that I like from Marquita’s books was there; this book just didn’t move me the way others have. While I liked it, it’s not in my top list of favorite Marquita Valentine’s books. However, it was a nice quick read for the snowy day I had.

I LOVE huge families and because it seems like quite a few series link back to Holland Springs, I think it’s time to list a family tree in the books. That would be so awesome!

Excerpt:

She rushed out of the kitchen before anyone could stop her, going as fast as she could without breaking into a run. But by the time she got to her room, Elijah had caught up. He grabbed her by the arm and pushed her inside, closing the door behind them.

“Mind telling me what that was all about?” he asked, even as sparks of desire tripped up and down her arm from where their skin touched.

Did he feel it, too?

“I was only stating the truth,” she insisted.

“Your truth is to tell us that we shouldn’t bother getting to know you because all that matters is Miles?”

She closed her eyes for a moment. “Of course, he’s all that matters. I stopped mattering as soon as he was born!”

“Well, that’s not how we do things in this family. You matter just as much."

Cover Reveal: Sky's the Limit by Elle Aycart

Tired of waiting for her big break in the fashion industry, Sky Gonzalez, eternal part-time student and overworked retail drone, quits her job, sublets her New York apartment, and embarks on a semester abroad study program in Paris. Paris! Time to throw caution to the winds and jump-start her dreams. What’s the worst that could happen?

How about getting sent to the wrong Paris? As in Paris-frigging-Minnesota?

Bye-bye career dreams. Bye-bye glamour and haute couture. Hello flannel shirts, mind-numbing cold, zero bars on the cell phone, and socially challenged mountain men with tons of unruly facial hair.

So yeah, let the truck barreling her way hit her, please. Less painful.

Logan should have dodged the little lost waif and kept on driving. Who in their right mind walked in the middle of the road, dressed in white from head to high heels, during a snowstorm? Clueless city girls, that's who. Sky is all that Logan has gladly left behind: stylish, cosmopolitan, and a massive pain in the butt. He wouldn’t trade a single day in his quirky little corner of the woods for all the high-maintenance beauties the city can offer.

Too bad this beauty has been deemed a health hazard and quarantined in his house. Damn his doomsday-prepper neighbors and their paranoid emergency protocols. Now  he has to keep Sky in and the pandemic squad out until the roads are clear. The question is, will that happen before or after Sky realizes she's under house arrest?

Ah, the best-laid plans...

In addition to being a wife and mom, she’s also a wino, a coffee addict, and an avid lover of all types of books–romances still being her all time favs. Her husband likes to claim that reading is her obsession but she just says it’s a passion…there’s a difference. Bog Tour: Behind the Bards by Brittany C. Cherry

BCC BLOG TOUR

Behind the Bars, the first beautiful and emotional standalone in the all-new Music Street Series from Brittainy C. Cherry is available NOW!

When I first met Jasmine Greene, she came in as raindrops.
I was the awkward musician, and she was the high school queen.
The only things we had in common were our music and our loneliness.
Something in her eyes told me her smile wasn’t always the truth.
Something in her voice gave me a hope I always wished to find.
And in a flash, she was gone.
Years later, she was standing in front of me on a street in New Orleans.
She was different, but so was I. Life made us colder. Harder. Isolated.
Caged.
Even though we were different, the broken pieces of me recognized the sadness in her.
Now she was back, and I wouldn’t make the mistake of letting her go again.

When I first met Jasmine Greene, she came in as raindrops.
When we met again, she was the darkest storm.

Behind the Bars Wrap4 Stars
Review by Lisa Kane

“One can’t truly heal if they pretend the cracks don’t exist.”

Behind the Bars is the story of Jasmine Greene and Elliott  Adams. She’s the gorgeous immensely talented girl working hard for her lucky break. He’s the brilliant musician trapped in a skinny stuttering body. Her mother pushes her, obsessed with her daughter fulfilling her own unfulfilled dreams. Jasmine craves her mother’s acceptance, something she might never have.

I couldn’t just be a great singer, I needed to be the best actress and dancer out there, too. More talents meant more opportunities, more opportunities meant more fame, and more fame meant Mama might be proud of me.

Jasmine and Elliott are brought together through their shared passion for music.

That’s when I saw the boy who played the music. I’d always say I saw him first, but he’d argue that was a lie. Technically I didn’t see him at first-I felt him, felt his music crawl along my skin.

Jasmine is the “it” girl in high school-desired by the hormone driven boys.

Jasmine Greene had walked into Canon High School as if she owned it. She’d started a few weeks into first semester, but that hadn’t stopped her from acting as if the whole student body deserved to bow down to her, and bow down they did.

Poor choices are made. Elliott is the target for those same boys. Bullied, bloodied and bruised by their sick games. Only it’s not just Elliott that is their victim.
Opportunities bring big changes and Jasmine is destined to walk a different path from Elliott’s. But Jasmine doesn’t know just how much Elliott’s life is about to change.
There are hard lessons to be learned.

“What’s your truth?”
“My truth?”
“Yep.”
“I’m sorry, I don’t know what that means.”
He shifted around and turned to face me more. “What drives you? What motivates you? What breaks you and heals you all at once? What keeps you going each day? What’s your truth? What are the saddest parts of your soul? What causes your heart to shatter?”

Years go by, years of separation without any contact. But once Jasmine and Elliott meet again, it’s plain to see that time has not been kind to either of them.

“You don’t know me anymore, and I have no desire to r-r-rebuild a friendship. I didn’t come back for you,” he told me, his tone so cold.

Both have imprisoned themselves in their own private version of hell. Especially Elliott. There are so many obstacles that stand in their way, can they ever recapture what they once had?

“You’re the music in a mute world, and my heart beats because you’re here.”

By the way, what happened to Todd’s nose?” I asked.

“I broke it,” Elliott said matter-of-factly.

“What? How? Why?”

He shrugged before turning to look out the window. “He called you a bad name.”

“What was it?”

“It doesn’t matter.”

“Eli,” I started.

He turned my way and locked his hazel eyes with my browns. “Jazz…” He shook his head. “It wasn’t true.”

I swallowed hard, a big part of me certain Todd’s words held some form of truth.

Elliott saw it in me—my fear. He kept shaking his head and whispered, “I don’t feel sorry for you. Sometimes you look at me like you think I feel sorry for you, and I want you to know I don’t. I think you’re perfect the way you are.”

I quietly laughed at him repeating the words I’d told him earlier. A few tears rolled down my cheeks. “I’m a little messed up.”

“I know.” He nodded. “That’s why I like you.”

He went back to staring out the window, and I kept staring at him.

And there it was.

So small, so tiny, so real.

Love.

It wasn’t love, but it was the beginning of it.

I knew I was young, and I knew it was stupid, but in that moment, I began to fall in love with the quiet boy who quietly cared for me. The boy who was scared and still strong. The boy who stood up for me when he was surrounded by reasons not to do such a thing. I hadn’t known much about love. I hadn’t known how it looked, felt, or tasted. I hadn’t known how it moved, how it flowed, but I knew my heart was tight and currently skipping a few beats. I understood the goose bumps covering my arms. I knew this stuttering boy who was sometimes so scared was someone worth loving. He was worth being the first one I gave my heart to.

I knew Elliott Adams was love.

And I was falling into him so fast.

When Henry finally realizes the truth, and decides to make amends, Nadia wants nothing to do with him. But she underestimates his determination and charm and soon they find themselves embroiled in an intense, passionate affair.

4.5 Stars
Review by Lisa Kane

I was a big fan of Samantha Young’s Hero, but always wondered if Henry Lexington, Caine Carraway’s best friend would ever get his own story. The wait is over!
Nadia Ray is a broadcast meteorologist. But her curves and vivacious personality have somehow turned her into Boston’s Pin-Up Girl.

But Boston liked my curves. I was “WCVB’s Weather Pin-Up Girl.” The attention was a little daunting at first, and truthfully I was at war with myself over it. Part of me got a huge confidence boost from it, and the other part of me was uneasy that they were focused on my appearance.

Nadia has always had issues with her looks-although most men have appreciated her curvy body, she’s had her share of dates suggest she switch from burgers to salads. Her boss, Dick (this guy is aptly named!) is constantly throwing out lewd jokes about Nadia and disgusting suggestions about improving ratings while dressing her in a bikini for her weather forecast.

“Fantastic. Let’s get you to the beach next week in a bikini for Monday’s weather report.”

But Dick knows some things about Nadia and in an attempt to have her dig into Carraway’s past he doesn’t hesitate to use what he knows. Nadia pokes around into Caine’s history, discovers things that aren’t public knowledge yet and ends up poking a sleeping bear otherwise known as Henry Lexington.

Henry may have the reputation of a charming, brilliant millionaire who attracts women like bees to honey, but he is as hard as nails and as ruthless when someone he cares about is threatened. His first encounter with Nadia leaves her furious and shaken.

“Don’t think seduction will work here,” he bit out, starring at my mouth, surprising me because seduction was the last thing on my mind. “Contrary to popular belief, I’m not swayed by every pretty face I see.” He pushed off the wall and stepped back. “You will bury this story or I will bury your career.”

Nadia’s real intentions soon come to light and Henry realizes his mistake. Nadia might be attracted to him, but she’s not about to let him into her heart. Her bed-now that’s a different story!

“I don’t particularly like you. In fact, you have become one of the villains in my story so far. I don’t want to date you and I doubt very much that you are interested in dating me. However, I also doubt that you feel so guilty about your treatment of me that you merely want to turn around my opinion of you. No, sir. I’m here because you’re attracted to me. That’s okay because apparently, I’m attracted to you too. You’re hot and it’s obvious but I can’t deny it.”

How can you not love this woman?

Villain is a hot read with a heroine who has no problem expressing what desires she want fulfilled and how she likes it. Henry is a man almost confused as to how he has fallen so hard-the man who never gets serious about a woman finds himself totally smitten by her. But Nadia’s secrets are big ones and Henry’s world consists of high society money and powerful people who thrive on bringing others down. Will she be his downfall?

“With you, it’s always making love.”

“I need to apologize,” he said to my back as I hurried into my sitting room. My shoulders hunched to my neck at the words. I couldn’t look at him.
What did he want me to say? That it was okay?
Because it wasn’t.
No one, no matter what, should have to be subjected to what that woman said to me.
Henry’s mother!
He was in Cloud Cuckoo Land if he thought this, whatever this was between us, could ever work out when his mother thought so little of me.
“Just go,” I snapped, not looking at him.
“No,” he said, his tone stern. “Not until you turn around and look at me.”
I shot him a glare over my shoulder. “Satisfied? Now leave.”
Instead of leaving, he studied my face, softening as if he understood what was going on behind my fury.
But he didn’t understand.
“I cannot apologize enough for what my mother said to you. Frankly, right now I’m ashamed I share DNA with the woman. That was the reason I was avoiding her. She’s … bad with the women I date normally, even the ones she’s set me up with. No one is good enough. Usually, it’s merely irritating, but I didn’t want to subject you to her. And if I had known how goddamn low she’d sink tonight, I never would’ve put you in that situation.”
I heard his words, but I couldn’t feel them. I couldn’t feel the anger and worry in them that I’d later remember. In that moment, all I saw were the flowers peeking over the top of the trash can behind him. Flowers that had arrived at my apartment earlier that afternoon. Flowers that meant he’d found my home address. Flowers that taunted me, saying, “You can’t be angry at Penelope Lexington when you know she’d feel smug with satisfaction if she ever discovered the truth.” She’d feel vindicated in her opinion of me.
Worse would be how Henry would react if he knew the truth. How he’d never look at me the same way again. He’d never look at me in that way that was getting under my skin, becoming an addiction, despite all the defenses I’d tried to put up against him.
A chill shivered down my spine.
“Nadia, what can I do? What—”
“If you’re not going to leave,” I turned around to fully face him, “then we might as well get this over with.”
Henry watched with narrowed eyes as I threw my purse on the couch and then removed my earrings. “What are you doing?”
Cold, toneless, I reminded him, “Our arrangement is almost over. A deal is a deal.”
“A deal is a deal?” The muscle in his jaw twitched, his eyes flashing. “You’re going to fuck me like some martyr?”
“Well, I’d prefer it if you leave but I don’t welch on a deal.”
“Nadia, don’t hide from me.” I could hear the barely contained fury beneath his words and in a twisted way, I reveled in it. I wanted his anger. I wanted to force him to walk away and walk away for good. “Talk to me.”
I scoffed. “Why do you keep trying to make this more than it is? You wanted to slum it with the local weather girl. I wanted to get laid because it’s been a while. You just happened to be there and I’ve heard you’re good. That’s all this ever was. And I’m not one of your uptight society princesses who needs to be assured you want more from me than a dirty fuck.”
“Nadia …”
I didn’t heed the growl of warning in his voice. “Let me make it clearer,” I hissed out, all my rage at myself redirected at him like I knew and feared would happen. “I don’t do relationships with spoiled rich boys who run away from their mommas. I’ll let a rich boy fuck me for the hell of it, but rest assured when I do let someone in long-term, it’ll be a man.
Not even a second later, Henry crossed the distance between us, one hand tangling into my pinned-up hair, the other around my waist. He yanked me roughly against him before I could blink and slammed his mouth down over mine in a hard, punishing kiss.
