That is, until one fateful night when Kylie decides to go after all of her forbidden fantasies and risk everything.

4 Star Review by Guest Reviewer Nicole Lorenzo

Kylie Lord has been in love with Trent Moss since she first laid eyes on him in college. She has hated Dray Savage for just as long. Trent is the good guy, a humanitarian who works in other countries providing clean water and other necessities. With no other family other than his foster brother Dray, Trent sees Kylie as his best friend and sister, not the love of his life. Kylie has been waiting for Trent to open his eyes and see what’s been right in front of him for years, but he never does and she is tired of life passing her by while she waits for someone who doesn’t love her in return.

“No one ever understands how I had rather have him in my life to love him how he needs, than to not have him at all. No other man has ever come close to measuring up in my heart”

Dray Savage is the bane of Kylie’s existence. He is a cocky, hot, NFL superstar who knows how to get under Kylies skin, by always teasing and torturing her with crude comments. Kylie tries to avoid him at all costs, but as Trent’s foster brother and best friend he is always around. When Dray gets hurt on the field Trent calls Kylie begging her to go take care of Dray in his absence. Not being able to say no to Trent, Kylie agrees and finds herself in a situation she never imagined.  While caring for Dray, she finds herself actually enjoying her time spent with him and actually fighting a connection she never thought possible.

“I just have to get through the next couple of weeks without losing my sanity or worse, something I never thought was in danger with Dray. My heart.”

Dray has watched Kylie from afar for years. Jealous of the unrequited love she has for Trent, he lashes out at her with crude comments, never admitting his true feelings for her. When Dray gets injured on the field Kylie is suddenly at his side and they grow closer, not being able to deny the attraction they have towards each other.

“Shhh,” he whispers. “Just let it happen. For so many years, we’ve drawn our battle lines and fought this war, but I’m waving the white flag.

Kylie finds herself doing the unimaginable, falling in love with Dray. She is scared and confused over her newly acquired feelings which only worsen when Trent finally comes home, and finally admits he has feelings for her after all these years. Now she is torn between the man she has always loved and the man she never though she could. The complicated relationship between the three of them is put to the ultimate test and Kylie has to make a decision that will change everything.

“If you would of told me that the man standing before me would alter my life in any way a year ago, I would of laughed. So much has changed, and at the same time, so much remains unchanged.”

Cake by Nicole Reed is a story about choices. The choice to love, to take chances, to make hard decisions, and to make mistakes. The love triangle between Kylie, Dray and Trent is very emotional. Dray and Trent’s upbringing left them both scarred. While Trent has trouble with commitment, Dray has trouble opening up and Kylie wound up in love with both of them for very different reasons. Dray at first comes across as the bad boy, and although not all of his qualities are redeeming, I felt like he acted out to protect himself. Trent was afraid of losing one of the only people who truly loved him no matter what, so he tried to keep Kylie at a distance emotionally. There are two characters that play a big part in this story as well, and that is Kylie’s Aunt Leigh who acts as her confidant, and her hilarious best friend Mads. They both help Kylie along the way in making the biggest decision she has ever faced.

There were parts of this book that were really funny and I found myself laughing out loud quite a few times! There were also parts that I was sad and frustrated as well. I did feel that the book ended quite abruptly, although I think the Epilogue wrapped things up nicely.  Overall I really enjoyed this story and I can’t wait to read the next book that will focus on Kylie’s best friend Mads. Hopefully we can get a peek of what Kylie, Dray and Trent are up to as well!

“Bad decisions always make a good story.”
