Blog Tour: The Hard Truth About Sunshine by Sawyer Bennett

FBHardTruthNowAvailable

New York Times bestselling author Sawyer Bennett has written her most gripping and poignant tale yet. Provocatively heart-breaking, audaciously irreverent and romantically fulfilling, The Hard Truth About Sunshine exposes just how very thin the line is between a full life and an empty existence.

Despite having narrowly escaped death's clutches, Christopher Barlow is grateful for nothing. His capacity to love has been crushed. He hates everyone and everything, completely unable to see past the gray stain of misery that coats his perception of the world. It's only after he involuntarily joins a band of depressed misfits who are struggling to overcome their own problems, does Christopher start to re-evaluate his lot in life.

What could they possibly learn from one another? How could they possibly help each other to heal? And the question that Christopher asks himself over and over again... can he learn to love again?

He's about to find out as he embarks upon a cross country trip with a beautiful woman who is going blind, a boy with terminal cancer, and an abuse victim who can't decide whether she wants to live or die.

Four people with nothing in common but their destination. They will encounter adventure, thrills, loss and love. And within their travels they will learn the greatest lesson of all.

The hard truth about sunshine...
Warning: This book deals with some tough issues including suicide and sexual abuse.

The Hard Truth About Sunshine AMAZON5 Stars
Review by Jen Skewes

I have read many of Sawyer Bennett’s books, but the Truth About Sunshine is so unlike anything that she has ever written before.  It is an honest, real and raw depiction of life for four individuals who are trying to deal with what life has thrown their way.  It is a story that deals with life, death, fear, loss, hope, love and friendship.   This is a story that deals with some very hard truths, and very delicate topics.  It may not be for everyone but for me personally I think this may be Ms. Bennett’s best book yet.  It is so real and raw and emotional and it captured me from the very beginning.  I hurt with these characters, I felt their pain but I also held onto hope for them as well.

Christopher is a vet, having spent time in Afghanistan.  It has been about two years since he has returned and still trying to get past those dark moments in his life that he cannot forget.  He is still dealing with what he saw while over there but also trying to come to terms with the aftermath and all that he has suffered since.  He is in a dark place, dealing with his injuries but also his life as well.  He has lost so much and the pain that he has endured because of it is still very much a part of him.  He feels like he is no longer the man that he used to be, and not worthy of living a life filled with happiness.

Christopher has an altercation one night that lands him in jail.  In order to stay out he is ordered by the courts to attend therapy sessions.  That is where he meets Jillian, Connor and Barb, four individuals who are all so different from each other but are all dealing with the hand that life has dealt them.  When it is suggested that they all take a road trip together, Christopher is completely against it, not wanting to spend any time with these people.  But in a way he doesn’t really have a choice and so these four individuals set off on a trip that will be a bucket list trip in a way.

This story is told from Christopher’s point of view.  We get to see how deep his feelings and emotions run.  We see that his reasons for taking this trip may be a bit selfish, but he has no plans of getting to know these people, no plans of opening up his heart and soul to them or becoming friends.  He is angry and bitter at the world and this trip is exactly what he needs whether he believes it or not. This is a man that is so deeply wounded from his experiences that he just wants to close himself off to the world.  Will he be able to open up again, to both love and friendship?

Sawyer Bennett took us on this beautiful journey with four people who each had a story to share.  Jillian a young and beautiful girl who is coming to terms with the fact that she is sick and at some point will lose her eyesight.  She sees the world in a way that I think most people wouldn’t.  Connor is a young man who is facing death, wanting to check things off his bucket list and at the same time I think he just wants to live life to the fullest and make a friend or two along the way.  Barb is the girl with the very dark past who has to decide if she should hold onto the small amount of light that has entered her life or succumb to the darkness that she has found herself in for so long.  Together these four people embark on a journey that they will never forget and one that will change their lives.

I loved this book so much.   The writing was phenomenal and while it dealt with very heavy topics I think Ms. Bennett handled them in a very delicate way.  Yes there were moments that were so intense and felt so real and so raw, but it was never too much for me.  She gave an honest portrayal of what these four people were going through.  We see the layers of each person slowly peeled back and we get a look into their soul.  We are able to see their darkest moments and their best moments.  We get to see how four strangers can come together and form an amazing bond that I think none of them expected.  Their trip was filled with happy times but also sad times as well.  But that is life and that is what I loved about this book.  There was no sugar coating it, there was over the top moments.  Every bit of this book was real.

The Hard Truth About Sunshine is a beautiful story about love, lose, friendship and so much more.  It is one of those stories that will stay with you.  The characters are ones that you will never forget.  Ms. Bennett did an amazing job with this story!!!!

Jillian holds my gaze for a moment, her eyes drilling into mine before she gently tugs on the material of my jeans near the shin rod of my prosthetic. “What happened to you?”

She doesn’t look away. Not down at the fire, not down to my legs. She stares right at me. Although my gut is turning slightly at the thought of telling her what she asked, I forge straight ahead. For the first time, I tell someone who is not medical personnel or a shrink my story.

“I was driving a military Humvee and the right front tire ran over a roadside bomb,” I say, and Jillian makes a sound of distress low her in throat as her eyes turn sad. “It completely obliterated my buddy sitting in the passenger seat.”

To my surprise, Jillian scoots over closer to me and lays her head on my shoulder. She pushes her hand in between my ribs and my arm, curling her fingers over my bicep. It’s a show of support. Solidarity. That she’s settled in for the long haul of this story, and she wants to hear it all.

“It didn’t blow my leg off,” I tell her, and I can feel her body jerk slightly in surprise. Her fingers squeeze my bicep. “The fingers yes, the leg no. It just shattered and shredded it badly, but the doctors tried hard to save it.”

“Obviously, they couldn’t,” she whispers the obvious.

“They tried for three months,” I tell her, reaching down to grab my phone laying near my left hip. Jillian lifts her head up, watching as I pull up my pictures. I scroll backward, but it doesn’t take long to find what I’m looking for because I don’t take a lot of photos. I hold the phone out so she can see. “This was taken about a month after my injury.”

Jillian makes a strangled sound as she looks at the photo of me in bed. My eyes are half open because I was bombed out on so many heavy-duty pain medications, and I have a grimace on my face. I vaguely remember this picture being taken, and I think it may have been by my brother, Hank, when he came to visit once during that first month. He came a few more times after that, and then he didn’t.

Jillian’s eyes roam over the photo. My leg is encased in the external fixator with several rods leading from the outside of the cage right into my skin, where it’s drilled through and into the bone to hold the pieces together. The wounds on my leg are all open to the air, red and some of them dripping with puss and lined with blisters. I’ve got IVs in both arms and a PICC line in the right side of my neck to deliver the hordes of antibiotics and pain meds I needed to keep me alive and functioning. I took the maximum dosages they allowed me, preferring to try to be oblivious to what was happening. Yet, the pain was so great it just couldn’t be fully erased.

Jillian turns her head to look at me, and I lay the phone back down. “How long were you like that?”

“Three months. But they couldn’t get ahead of the infections, which were delaying the bones from knitting. I was in so much pain that I wanted them to amputate.”

“You had to make that decision?” she whispers.

I nod. “Yup. I mean… the doctors were at the point they felt it was the right way to go, although they were willing to keep trying if I wanted. But I wanted it gone. I was tired of being in the hospital and being in so much pain. I just wanted it gone.”

“Do you regret that decision?” she asks me bluntly, but with that still-sweet melody her voice makes. The question doesn’t bother me, because even her hard questions sound lovely.

“Yes,” I tell her without any shame. “I wonder what would have happened if I held on just a little bit longer. Not long after the leg came off, the pain receded and I became more lucid. Once I’d forgotten how bad the infections smelled, I regretted it.”

“Three months is an awful long time to be in pain like that,” she points out the obvious.

I shrug. “And the rest of my life is a long time to wonder ‘what if.’”

Review by Jen Skewes

I could not wait for this book.  After Ms. Kelly left us hanging I needed to know what would happen next.  At the end of  Just an Illusion Side A there was an altercation that took place with Noah, his ex and Mel, the love of his life.  All though I am not sure you can really call it an altercation.  More like Noah and Mel suffering from the wrath of a very unstable girl.  So of course I needed to know how it would all end.

Side B starts off exactly where we left off.  We see exactly what happened and who made it out ok.  This is the story of how these characters are dealing with the recent tragic events.  How they will move on from it.  Ms. Kelly takes us on a journey into the worlds of these rock stars and their loved ones.  But it isn’t just about the touring and the rock star life.  This is about their personal lives, the behind the scenes look at their family, their friends and their relationships.  We see their struggles, their fears and everything else that you don’t see on stage.

Side B is a little but more tame in regards to drama.  This is more of the sweeter side of things, and the connections that they all have.  I love seeing the love that Noah and Mel have for each other.  I love the relationship and connection she has with Sawyer.  Belle and Darren are so adorably cute together.  I could not get enough of these characters.  We see how they are all truly one big family who are all there for each other.  So while a majority of this book made you feel good and happy and took place in the past.  But there are also a few moments that are in the present.  We see Mel today, struggling with an ultimatum but we have no idea where or who it is coming from, and that is the suspense part of this series that I love.

I smiled throughout this book because it is one of those books that just makes you feel good. There were some moments where I was a little surprised at what happened but it was not until the very end where D. Kelly shocked me in a way that I never ever saw coming.  I sat there hoping that I was reading it all wrong, then I thought about when this story continues in the final installment I hope that someone will tell me it was all a dream.  It was at that moment that theories started swirling in my head as to how this story will end.   Theories that will help us to understand what has led to the present situation that Mel is currently in, the one that we only get a glimpse of.  And then of course I kept wondering why?  I was completely blown away.  Dam you Ms. Kelly for doing that to me…..lol

I loved this installment and the characters.  I feel like I am a part of their lives and I love every single moment that I spend with them, because Ms. Kelly’s writing makes you feel like you are a part of their world.  You feel what they feel, the love, the family connections, the pain.  You feel it all.   I cannot wait for the next to see how this story ends!!

The Opposite of You by Rachel Higginson

I’ve sworn off men.

All men.

Famous last words, right? You’re expecting some epic tale of reluctant love and my dramatic change of heart? Well, you’re not going to get it.

I’m stubborn. And headstrong. And I’ve just survived the worst three years of my life. After escaping an abusive boyfriend to live in hostels and cheap hotels while I worked my way across Europe, I’ve come to two conclusions.

The first? Now that I’m back home, I’m going to squander my expensive culinary degree on a food truck that caters to the late night drunk crowd.

The second? I’m going to prove to the bastard across the plaza that my street food is better than his fussy five course monstrosities.

Killian Quinn might be Food and Wine’s Chef to Watch Out For. He might have a Michelin Star. He might have every food critic in the city wrapped around his too-large fingers. But he’s also pretentious and unbearably arrogant and the very opposite of me.

So he can keep his unsolicited advice and his late night visits and his cocky smiles. I want none of it. Or him.

I want the opposite.

5 stars
Review by Jen Skewes

The Opposite of You was fantastic.  I adored this book and the characters.  I always look forward to Rachel Higginson’s books.  Her writing is flawless and she always makes me feel.  And I don’t mean that she makes me feel the deep emotions I mean in general she just makes me feel what the characters are feeling.  She has this ability of making you feel like you are a part of them and their lives.  Whether those feelings are happy, sad, hurt, pain or joy, it does not matter because she makes you feel it.  And this book was no different.

Vera ran away from her home town a few years ago when things with her ex got so bad that she just needed to pick up and go.  She wanted to find herself and at the same time follow the dreams that she had for herself, live her life the way she wanted to.  But when her father becomes ill she goes back home to help take care of him.  She has never given up on her dream of becoming a chef but she has a different plan in mind, opening a food truck.   She has decided to use her culinary skills to own and operate a food truck making comfort food that has her own unique twist to it.

She sets up her truck for business directly across from a well known restaurant where the head chef, Killian Quinn, is well know for his skills in the kitchen.  But this is the spot that works for her.  Killian is hot and sexy and from the moment she first see him she is certainly attracted to him.  But he can be cocky, arrogant and sometimes a bit obnoxious.  He is everything that she needs to stay away from.  Her focus is her food truck, plus after her last relationship she has sworn off men, until Killian Quinn somehow squeezes his way into her life.  She hates him but at the same time she wants him.  With everything that she has been through can she truly trust another man and open up to him as well?  Or will it get in the way of her career?

I think what I loved the most about this book was for one the storyline.  It was different, and just a fun story to read.  The other part of the book that I really loved was the characters and not just Vera and Killian but the whole set of characters.  They all played a part in this story and I loved them.  Killian was this character that may have been a little hard to like in the beginning but for me personally I loved him.  He found this way to not only taste Vera’s food but to critique it as well.  He gave her unsolicited advice that only made her hate him more.  But that is what I loved about them.  I loved the dynamic between them, the back and forth banter between them, the flirting and the connection.  Of course as the reader I felt like Vera did, wondering what Killlian wanted and why he was so obsessed with her food.  But at time goes on you see another side of Killian, one that I think many people do not see.  I loved him because he could be sweet and kind but also because of who he was, even when he was being obnoxious he had a good heart.

Vera has been through so much and I loved how she finally was able to find herself and be the strong woman that she truly is.  She did not take Killian’s crap and gave it back to him just as good.  She stayed strong and in a way it pushed her harder.

I loved Vera and Killian but this story wasn’t just about them.  It is about a girl and her best friend who are always there for each other, a sister and brother who no matter what stick together, and a father and daughter who have a beautiful relationship, even if he wasn’t always there while growing up you see how much this man truly loves his daughter and how proud of her, he is.  I loved this one so much and cannot wait for the next one.

I clenched my teeth so hard, my jaw ticked. He was a pushy, intrusive asshole. And completely right. Damn him. I shoved my way between him and the stove, grabbing for the red pepper flakes, just to make a point that this was still my kitchen.
“You went a little light.”
He peered over my shoulder, his chest pressing momentarily against my back. His deep voice rumbled in my ear. “Careful, chef.”
I shivered. I couldn’t help it. He made the relentless summer day feel frigid compared to his body heat. His breath danced along my earlobe and despite the savory sauce filling the kitchen with Mediterranean scents and tangible defeat, all I could smell was him.
The whisk in my hand trembled once, twice. I leaned back into him, unable to resist exploring what it would feel like to be pressed against his hard chest, how he would make me feel against his body.
I had to know.
He leaned closer, and my shoulders settled against him, his hand landing on my hip with the lightest touch. A ripple of uncertainty vibrated through me. I should pull away. I shouldn’t have gotten this close to begin with.
I started to step to the side and Killian’s fingers dug into my hip, holding me in place, taking the decision away from me. His touch was light only seconds before now it was strong, familiar, possessive. He was used to getting his way and I’d suddenly stopped coming up with reasons why I shouldn’t let him have it.

Review by Lisa Kane
4 Stars!

I adore the Eversea and Butler Cove series! Jack stole my heart and has yet to give it back! He and Keri Ann are living together, loving life and enjoying their mutual success.

Only one thing would make it perfect-if Keri Ann would finally agree to marry Jack. Just when it looks like the happy couple will be walking down the aisle, life throws them a huge curveball. Keri Ann begins to doubt their HEA. Oh the angst....

So here I am...still waiting.
It sounded so ridiculous.  I winced as I said it. Especially in light of the fact it was more than eight months ago.

Keri Ann's brother Joey and Jazz are still going strong-she is running the bed and breakfast business and Joey is studying medicine. There just may be a little drama between Keri Ann and Jazz that made my eyes bug out. Meow!!

Our favorite couple is slipped a little but I had no doubt they would find their footing. Jack is still hero material and has never let success go to his head. Keri Ann has found a way to live with his fame, but it hasn't been easy.

"Why," Jack murmured between kisses, "don't you...belive..how much..."his teeth closed softly on my earlobe, his hot mouth making my skin tingle, "I love you. How much I want you. Only you."
