Review and Giveaway: Two Roads by L. M. Augustine

The only person poetry-loving Cali Monroe hates more than herself is Logan Waters, the geeky kid who lives in the dorm building next to hers.

Ever since Cali's parents told her she would amount to nothing, she has felt entirely inadequate. Friendless and alone, she takes on the mean girl role in hopes it will make her feel better--and Logan serves as the perfect target. He infuriates her with his obnoxiously long lashes, his all too perfect dimpled smile, and his complete lack of personality outside of his intelligence. It doesn't hurt that he's part of the reason her brother is dead, either. So Cali hates him, and he returns the favor. Thus, their prank-filled, insult-driven rivalry is born, and torturing Logan quickly becomes the highlight of her life.

But when Cali's parents set them up on a blind date, she begins to realize Logan might not be as boring as she always thought. He shares her love of poetry, takes a sadistic pleasure in making fun of crepes, and he makes her blush when he calls her smile pretty.

And hey, maybe those long lashes of his aren't that obnoxious after all…

Two Roads is New Adult Romance about finding love, standing out, and learning to embrace who you are. It contains some language and mild sexual content.

4.5 Star Review by Nicole Lorenzo

Cali Monroe has a ton of friends; she gets invited to best parties, hooks up with a different guy every night and….. it is all an act. She plays the “mean girl” to cope with the death of her brother and to deal with constantly feeling inadequate due to her parents. In reality Cali loves poetry and hates most of the people she hangs out with.  The one person she really does hate is Logan Waters. He’s a math nerd who hates Crepes and loves wearing geeky t-shirts. He was once her brother’s best friend, and Cali once had a crush on him, now he is her nemesis. Cali partially blames Logan for her brother's death four years ago and now she spends each and everyday of the last six months insulting and pranking him.

“We make a game of our rivalry, of our pranks, and it’s weirdly fun to see what each person does to the other next. We’re almost on this whole new level with each other, like we have our own little corner of the world reserved just for us and our mutual red-hot-hatred, so I embrace it. I love it. I live it.”

Insulting and pranking Logan becomes the highlight of Cali’s day. She never thought she would look forward to seeing someone she hated so much.  When Cali’s parents set her up on a blind date and the date winds up being Logan, she learns that there is more to him then she ever imagined. He shares her love of poetry and the more time she spends with Logan the more she realizes that he is genuinely a good guy.

“I have no idea how or when his smile and eyelashes went from totally annoying to incredibly gorgeous, but apparently it happened because now, I cannot stop staring at him.”

Logan Waters has spent the last four years overcome with grief and guilt over the death of his best friend. Six months ago he transferred to the same college as his best friend's sister Cali. Not sure how to respond to her he just pretends he is fine, that everything is fine, and this starts the rivalry between him and Cali. Pranking and insulting Cali is the only way he can communicate with her; he doesn’t think he can ever tell her what he really means when he says ”I Hate You”! But as they spend more time together, and he convinces her to come to the Poetry Convention with him all his secrets will be revealed.

My love for you can keep the stars apart, can take the seeds of the tree of life, can do more wonders than I will ever know. I love you with every part of me, and I need you because I love you."

When Logan invites Cali to attend a poetry convention, the same one Cali has been dying to go to forever, she declines. Logan is persistent though and soon enough she finds herself giving in and heading to the poetry convention that she never thought she would attend. Alone with Logan surrounded by poetry brings out feelings in Cali she’s not sure she is ready to face. She finds herself with a decision to make, live forever with guilt and loneliness or move on and let the past go. There are two roads for Cali to choose from and only on one will she find true happiness.

”And that's the thing about love; no matter how hard you search, no matter how hard you run, sometimes, just sometimes, true love is right in front of you all along."

Two Roads is a love story about two people lost in grief and guilt. They both masquerade their feelings and depend on this rivalry between them to feel something, to feel anything. The unspoken attraction between Cali and Logan crackled it was so tense. There were moments of sadness, humor and joy and I loved how their mutual love of poetry helped bring them together. Two Roads is the second novel by L.M. Augustine. I have to say from start to finish I truly loved this book and look forward to reading other works by this author.

4 star review by Jen Skewes

Everything seemed to be perfect for Julie.  She was happy and in love with Jase, her boyfriend of over 3 years.  Until one day he completely shattered her heart when she caught him with her best friend.  Julie just picked up and left never saying goodbye to Jase or giving him any opportunity to explain, not that it mattered of course.  But she couldn't escape fast enough.   Julie went on to live her life and eventually found someone else who she felt happy with.  Jase still owned her heart and while she thought that she was happy with Dean, she didn't love him like a wife should and certainly didn't love him like she loved Jase.  But she soon learned that Dean was not the man she thought he was.  She eventually breaks free from Dean and heads back home after nine years of being gone.  Nine years since she has seen Jase.  And now she must face him after all this time, which makes her nervous, especially since she has a secret that she has been hiding.

Jase lost the only girl that he has ever loved. Julie was everything to him and the woman that he was going to spend the rest of his life with.  Until he messed up when he decided that sex with her best friend was more important than her.  It's been nine years since Julie left.  And over those nine years Jase has drowned his sorrows in whiskey and woman.   Half the time he is drunk and can't even remember who he was with the night before.  He never got over losing Julie and has never stopped loving her.  Now that Julie is back he vows to get her back, to make her forgive him and prove to her that he loves her.  Julie has her own secret that she has been keeping from him which doesn't go over too well with Jase.  But he realizes if he wants Julie back he needs to let it go and prove to her that he can be the man she deserves.  Julie still loves Jase and never stopped, but is that enough?  Will she be able to trust him again and give him a second chance?

When we first meet Jase in the prologue I honestly wasn't sure how I felt about him.  It wasn't just because he cheated, I could get over that, but he seemed like a complete jerk.  I won't give anything away but I wasn't sure if he would be able to redeem himself.  But I am happy to say I was completely wrong.  Jase never stopped loving Julie and from the minute she comes back he gives up his addiction to whiskey and woman and sets out to prove his love.  And to prove to her that he is still the amazing man she once loved.  Deep down Jase is a really good guy who is caring and loving and protective of Julie.  But alcohol and the loss of his mother got in his way and caused him to screw up big time.  Not really the best excuse but I think as the story goes on and secrets come out you begin to understand a little more of what happened and see that Jase really isn't the jerk you thought he was.  I fell in love with him.  I loved him for how he fought for Julie and how amazing he was with her and Jenny.

I enjoyed Julie's character.  She was strong and tried very hard to resist Jase.  She wasn't sure if she could trust him after all these years.  But she saw how hard he was trying and how dedicated he was to her.  She loved him and at some point her heart won the fight that it was having with her brain.  Their journey wasn't an easy one.  People from both of their pasts will go to whatever lengths necessary to keep them apart.  There is still the issue of trust that comes into play and no matter how much they love each other and how much they are meant to be together, Jase needs to prove that he deserves Julie's heart.

Whiskey Lullaby was a wonderful read and at times very emotional. It is one of those books that grabbed me right from the start.  The prologue got me and I needed to know if Jase and Julie would meet again and get their second chance and was Jase really the jerk that he seemed to be.  My heart broke at times for Julie.  She seemed to get hurt over and over, both physically and emotionally.  But she held on strong.  She had an amazing support team in her sister-in-law who we see had her own issues with Dean and I hope to learn more about that in the next book.  Julie also had Jase's brothers and father and her family who were so supportive and loving and simply amazing.  I love Julie and Jase's story.  Their journey wasn't an easy one, trust issues and their past got in the way at times.  But there was no doubt how much they loved each other and how much they belonged together.  Whiskey Lullaby is a story of love, betrayal, and second chances.  Wonderful job by Ms. Minton and Ms. Martens.

Review and Giveaway: Sarah Mine by Riann Colton

Disinherited and disenchanted, photojournalist Hill Deveraux has returned to his hometown and to Sarah James. A quick tumble in her bed and things usually look better for him. However, the Sarah he's come back to has changed from the girl he walked away from five years ago. There are secrets in her sad eyes and she's doing everything in her power to push him away. Hill is going to have man up and figure out what she means to him, because every time she tells him to go he's unable to stay away. When he learns Sarah's secrets his life and heart will never be the same.

4.5 Star Review by Jen Hagen

This is a short powerful story of 2 people who keep coming back together but yet they have no defining relationship.  Will Hill’s current arrival and Sarah’s inner defiance to him be what they need to push them to voice their feelings towards each other and solidify their relationship?

Sarah is 24 years old and has been clean from drugs and alcohol for over 3 years.  She was never loved by her father and her older sister as they blame her for the mother’s/wife death as she died giving birth to Sarah.  Sarah has suffered under the cruel hands of her father.  Sarah and Hill have been hooking up for several years.  The morning after always finds Sarah looking at an empty space in the bed with no good-bye from Hill.  She never knows when he will be coming back.

He’d show up, I’d let him in, we’d have sex, then I’d wake and he’d be gone.  All the time.  Constantly.

...And me? I’d bury it all beneath the booze and pills.  Anything to forget that no one wanted me for more than their own means.

Sarah has even moved to a different location and she comes home one late evening  to find Hill sitting outside her home, waiting for her.   She hasn’t seen Hill for 4 years, and a lot has changed for Sarah in those 4 years.   Sarah is stronger and knows that Hill can drop her down to the level that she has worked hard to move on from.  She tries to fight him and their attraction to each other, but when the attraction is so strong, the pull so right, and their obvious sexual chemistry so powerful, it’s difficult for Sarah to resist Hill.

He was my greatest downfall.  Forget the drugs and alcohol, this was my addiction.

Hill is 26 years and has been an outcast of his family since he was age 18.  He has made a name and a life for himself as a photographer, going to places and capturing the devastation as seen on people’s faces.  He has seen terrible things through his lens and the only thing that grounds him after one of these catastrophic events is Sarah. He returns to Sarah when he needs comfort as he sees Sarah as his home.  Hill has no home of his own, only hotel rooms.

During the time that Hill last saw her, Sarah had two life-changing events that she needs to tell Hill before he finds out from somebody else.  When Hill finds out about them he is hurt and devastated that she didn’t have the faith in him that he would be there by her side.

“You know I would have come back for you.  Though at this moment I’m kind of asking myself why… F*ck you for that, Sarah.  F*ck you right back.”

Now that ugly words have been said and wounds have been reopened, can Sarah and Hill see beyond the next morning and Hill’s eminent departure?

Hadn’t she been paying attention over the years?  I always came back.

This was a raw emotional read that I couldn’t put down.  The author didn’t give us a feel-good romance complete with flower petals, but rather a stripped bare unconditional love that will leave you feeling the empty voids in both Sarah and Hill, with the hopes that they can find their way to each other and subsequently have their happily ever after that they both deserve.

Giveaway and Review: Come Undone by Madelynne Ellis

On stage he’s dynamite. Off stage he rocks her world.

When red-hot, Goth-metal band, Black Halo, split live on stage, fate throws Daniella Fosbrook into the path of sexy vocalist Xane Geist. Initially, Xane’s only looking for a ride home, but Dani tempts him in a way a thousand other women haven’t. Determined to explore their heady chemistry and avoid hashing things out with the band, Xane whisks Dani off to Monaco for a steamy weekend.

There, Dani tries her best to hang onto her heart and some clothing, while Xane soon loses both. However, Xane isn’t being entirely honest about the reason for the band’s demise. When the truth comes out, can Dani accept the facts, or will everything come undone.

4 Star Review by Jen Hagen

Dani has been listening to music by Black Halo during the most trying times of her life.  It was the only thing that kept her moving forward, even though if she was caught listening to it she would fac the consequences at the hands of those who helped raised her.  Dani is attending a Black Halo concert when the opportunity arises for her to spend some up close and personal time with the lead singer, Xane.

Xane is a founding member of Black Halo along with his drummer and good friend, Steve.  Xane has recently found out that Steve and another member of the band mate have betrayed him.  Xane is very hurt by this action and even more so hurt by the fact that the remaining band members do not see how this would effect Xane.  He is tired of being treated as only a member of the band and they only see him as a way to succeed and not care about him as a human being.

He had to stop this charade somehow. If only to make them realise he wasn’t here to be used and abused.

Unfortunately Xane chooses 2 minutes into their concert set to announce that the band is done.  Xane walks away from it all.  While escaping from his band members,  he runs into Dani and asks her for a ride.  Dani and Xane travel to a remorse hideaway.  While Dani and Xane are spending time together holed up as recluses, they respond to the obvious sexual desires emanating from both of them.  Xane has previously had an addiction to sex and it appears that while his addiction may be better controlled, he still likes his sex, and WOW is that sex HOT.

Dani and Xane continue to evade his band mates and continue on their secret rendezvous that takes them across the sea and into beautiful places where no one will find them.  During this time of enchantment, Dani discovers a lifestyle that Xane conforms to that she is not comfortable with.  Xane is shocked  to realize how Dani feels about it.

‘I can’t believe … I thought you were more open-minded, and had more common sense than to think such crap.’

But this lifestyle of Xane’s could be an absolute deal breaker for Dani.  Xane’s way of life is what she was forced to run from as a child.

As much as she loved him, this changed things.

Can Dani accept Xane and what she has feared her entire life?  Will Xane forgive those who deceived him and can he forgive the entire band for not seeing how hard he was effected by the betrayal?  Or is it too late for words to heal?  What if the person you wanted to hold your heart is no longer here?

‘Nothing’s changed between us, Dani. I don’t suddenly love you any less. I still need you to be here.’

I liked this story for Xane’s uniqueness and the fact that he wears his heart on his sleeve.  He may be a goth rocker who hides behind makeup, jewelry and leather, but underneath it all is a guy who just wants to be loved and respected.    You’ll enjoy the steamy bedroom scenes and a very intriguing train ride.

Excerpt

Chase’s POV

I smile into her neck when I feel her pulse quicken a little bit.

“Chase?” Her quiet voice sounds a little bit dry and really tired.

I slowly flick my tongue out and lick her neck and trail soft kisses down to her collarbone. My hand on her hip squeezes slightly, pulling her back into me so she can feel how much I want her. Damn it, I just want her. All of her.

“What is it, babe?” I whisper into her throat when I realize she’s smiling a little bit and not moving away from me at all. In fact, I think she may have just relaxed into me a little bit more. “What do you need?”

I pull away from her slightly so I can look into her sleepy blue eyes. Her hair is a little messed up and her eyes are barely open, but I can still see that she wants me. Please, I plead with my eyes, don’t tell me you need a glass of water. Don’t tell me you want me to get the hell out of here.

But she doesn’t say any of those things. She just smiles and quietly, so quietly I almost ask her to repeat herself she simply says, “You.”

It’s all I need to hear. If she wants me, I’ll give her all of me. Every last piece of my body, my heart, and my soul. Anything she wants of mine is hers, I just don’t want her to fucking stomp all over it and give back pieces of me, leftover and broken, when she’s through with me.

With a devilish grin, I adjust her so she’s lying below me. “I’m all yours, babe.”
