Delilah Palmer has control of her life and outward personality, blocking the truth just below the surface. A façade meant to be normal and hide the scars of her childhood. She’s made a good life for herself, became a lawyer, and is free from the tortured past that haunts her daily. Until he comes along and breaks open the cracks.
Nathan Thorne has a past of his own. On the surface he is loved by all, personable, extroverted; everything Delilah isn’t. Hidden beneath is a dark and tormented man that only Delilah has to power to unveil.
Crammed in a small office together they see through each other’s masks, and the draw becomes too much, igniting an explosive relationship. Holloway and Holloway Law has a strict non-fraternization policy, forcing them to conceal their breach. Despite their efforts, separation becomes impossible, deceptions escalate, and Nathan has trouble coping; teetering on the edge of being overtaken by his past demons.
What secrets does he harbor that could keep him from giving in? What keeps him from healing and moving forward? And Delilah, where does she fit into all this turmoil?
Can they accept love and deal with all the trials that come their way when secrets are exposed? Or will they fall through the cracks of their pasts and be consumed by all that haunts them?
4 Star Review
Oh my…Nathan and Delilah (Lila) have a HOT and steamy
relationship going on. Too bad there’s a
no fraternization policy at their work that will result in one or both of their
firings.
Nathan is a good looking guy who has been around the block a
few times. Lila has had one relationship
and that was 2 years ago. They are put
into the same office space where the sexual tension becomes thick and
unavoidable.
Nathan has a secret and Lila can easily see it in his eyes
and the façade he presents. It’s part of
his past that he doesn’t talk about.
Lila could easily Google his name as her friends have done to find out
his story, but she wants him to be able to tell it to her on his terms. All she knows is that he has a lot of scars, some
of which are very painful. He is on a lot of meds: pain, anti-anxiety, anti-depressant,
sleeping, etc. Nathan has severe anger
issues…anger which results in 17 holes (at last count) in his apartment
wall.
“I’m angry because I’m
alive. My heart, my soul…they’re gone, dead, but my body remains. This is my
purgatory.”
Lila suffers from severe low self-worth after hearing
derogatory comments about herself made by people who were supposed to love and
support her. She struggles to find a
reason why anybody as good looking as Nathan is that would want her.
“…I was never wanted,
I was never good enough, never smart enough, never loved!”
Both of these people are broken and are a volatile
combination. A new colleague at their
work office pushes Nathan’s buttons on several occasions and Nathan’s
deep-seated anger issues are visible.
Even though there’s a non-fraternization policy at work, that doesn’t
stop the single ladies from swooning at Nathan and this irritates Lila. Can both these broken pasts be good for each
other?
Nathan and Lila have a difficult time defining what they are
to each other even though they’ve been exclusive to each other for months. Nathan will not use the word “girlfriend” and
still keeps his walls up to protect himself.
He says that he is protecting Lila from his past because in his past
everything was taken away from him.
“I’m not worried about
you being hurt by me, Lila. I’m worried about you being hurt because of me.”
The dynamic of Nathan
and Lila shifts. Nathan is spiraling downward
and there’s nothing Lila can do to stop him or to bring him back.
“I wasn’t strong
enough. I wasn’t enough. Never enough.”
Please note: This book was very intense in terms of sexual
situations and explicit language relating to those encounters.
