Review: In a Heartbeat by Liz King

For the past eight years I haven't been living, just ... Existing.

The pain, the guilt, and the shame I carry have been locked away deep inside me for so long that it's impenetrable, until him. Until Connor Reeves.

With a sexy smile and seductive eyes, the bad boy rocker walked right into my life without warning, and now the walls I built that hid all of my grief for so long are now crumbling at my feet.

Now I am left wondering if it's possible that just as life can cause pain, it can also heal wounds in a heartbeat.

4 Star Review by Allison East

Lynae went through a heartbreaking horrific ordeal at the ripe age of fourteen. She was raped by her boyfriend and she does not tell anyone. Those around her can tell something is off with her after the incident. She thinks what happened is her fault and no one will believe her giving the guy who did this is popular. She is a very strong character, all things considered.

After the prologue we catch up to present day, eight years later. Lynae is 23 and is a nurse. She doesn't date and has no social life, despite her friends Michelle and Gabbi's attempts.

For the past eight years I haven't been living, just...existing. But just as life can cause pain, it can also heal wounds in a heartbeat.

One Friday night she decides to tell her friends yes, and she ends up going to a bar to see a band, and there is a certain lead singer that will forever change her life. She feels a something come over her and looks over to see Connor Reeves, lead singer of Shameful Regret. Her friends notice him looking, but Lynae just shoots it down- like always.

"Holy sex on a stick!! He is F#### gorgeous!"
"He's probably not even looking at me."

She wants to leave, but before she does, she hears Connors voice.

Connor is associated with the bad boy image, simply because he is a lead singer in a band. However, he is the furthest thing from that and when he sees Lynae he just wants to take care of her. Connor can be hot headed but when it comes to Lynae he is an absolute sweet heart, and the true definition of an alpha male. Something about him draws Lynae in and she feels comfortable for the first time in her life.

The two have sort of a whirlwind romance- with Lynae going back and forth with her emotions, as well she should. I can't imagine how hard it is when you have been robbed of your innocence, and it's even harder to move on.

The author did an awesome job developing the main characters- as well as the secondary ones. We are introduced to Lynae's best friend, Sly, and of course her girlfriends, Michelle & Gabbi. She also gives us insight into the relationship between Lynae and her father, it is so poignant you can't help but love her more. Then there are the other men in Shameful Regret. Wade, the naughty, perverted one that plays bass but really has a big heart. Sean, the fun loving drummer and finally Marcus the lead guitarist who is quiet and takes everything in.

I really liked this book a lot, the only downside-it's a cliffhanger. If you can look past that, this was a fantastic debut novel from Liz King. Look out for book two!
