Review: When I'm Gone by Abbi Glines

WHEN I’M GONE by Abbi Glines
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Abbi Glines comes the next new adult novel in the Rosemary Beach series, in which we meet Mase, a Texas heartthrob first introduced in Take a Chance who comes to Rosemary Beach to stir things up.

I had an urge to fix all her problems. Which was stupid. She was doing fine without me. But something about those big eyes…

Mase Colt-Manning has always preferred his humble life as a Texas rancher to his birthright as the son of a legendary rock star. In fact, he rarely visits his father’s rarefied world in Rosemary Beach, especially if it means bunking at his vile half-sister Nan’s house—until one visit leads to a chance encounter with a young, gorgeous house maid who awakens him with her off-key but spirited imitation of a country music star…

Reese Ellis finally has her freedom. After escaping a lifetime of abuse from her parents and classmates for an undiagnosed learning disorder, she seizes the opportunity to be a house maid to some of the richest families in Rosemary Beach. But her job is in jeopardy when she causes an accident at the home of her most important client, Nan Dillon. When a hot, half-naked stranger with a cowboy’s swagger comes to her rescue, she’s intrigued—then afraid once he shows his own interest. Reese has never met a trustworthy man in her life. Will Mase be any different?

4 Gone Stars by Natasha Gentile

I’ve always had a love hate relationship with this series.  Actually I’ve had love with Rush.  I’ve had hate with Grant- a big time hate, an all consuming hate.  What I also love about this series is that no matter how much I may not like about one of the books, I always keep coming back for more.

I was so excited for Mase to get his own book.  We all wanted to get to know that strong alpha cowboy.  The protective older brother to Harlow and ugh, Nan.  With ever single book that she appears in I hope and pray that she finally comes back from Oz with a heart.  I mean come on, how can one person hold so much hatred, and I think she is like 5’2?  I thought for sure when she saved Harlow she would turn around, boy was I wrong, she is back and more evil than ever.  Imagine that!

Mase Colt-Manning was happy being in Texas.  On his farm being a rancher.  Sure he was the son of rock star Kiro, but his life is in Texas.
So imagine his surprise when he goes to Rosemary Beach to visit Harlow and his new niece Lila, waking up to a cleaning lady that is singing off key.  Well let’s just say he forgave her.

Then she turned, and I hardly had a moment to appreciate the front view before she screamed and dropped the vacuum cleaner as she pulled her earbuds out of her ears.  Big, round baby-blue eyes stared at me in horror as she opened and closed her mouth a few times as if she was trying to speak.
I took a moment of silence to check out her full pink lips and the perfect shape of her face.  Her hair was pulled up in a bun, but it was the color of midnight.  I wondered how long it was.

So now we have an interest.  He is interested in who this person is, and how did she come here?  But before he gets a chance to ask, boom she is falling over and slicing her hand open.  Enter Mase to the rescue, but that is what he is so good at fixing things.

Just one thing, Reese Ellis doesn’t really want his help.  She has her freedom, which is worth the whole world to her.  She has escaped her past where she was abused; verbally and mentally.  She was always being bullied in school for being the dumb and stupid one.  She has always depended on just herself, so she didn’t know how to handle Mase and his need to help fix her problems.

I had an urge to fix all her problems. Which was stupid. She was doing fine without me. But something about those big eyes…

When she finally accepts his help they start off on a quiet little friendship no one knows about, but that quickly snowballs once you get the citizens of Rosemary Beach talking.  Because when push comes to shove we all know that Mase is going to be the one standing and beside him he is going to make sure Reese is there and no one will be messing with her.  HeeHaw!!

Now these two didn’t just get on their horses and ride off into the sunset, there were a couple of hiccups.  But through it all Reese was surprised that she finally had someone that she could count on.  She finally had someone that was going to stand up and protect her, but when the cowboy boot is on the other foot, is Reese ready to fight for Mase?  Is she as strong as he thinks she is, or will she just cower in the corner like she has done her whole life?

I covered her mouth with mine and stopped her adorable, rambling argument.  Her surprised cry was followed by a whimper and she kissed me like she needed he taste of me to live.  Her sweetness seeped into me, as those plump lips pressed against mine.  I cupped her face and pulled her back so that I could look into her eyes.

I am really looking forward to the second part of this book.  It does end in a HEA and not really a cliffhanger.
