There once was a boy, and I loved him.
Logan Francis Silverstone and I were complete opposites. I danced, and he stood still. He was quiet, while I ran my mouth. He struggled to find a smile, and I refused to frown.
The night I saw the darkness that truly lived inside of him, I couldn't look away.
We were broken together, yet somehow whole. We were wrong together, but always right. We were the stars that burned across the night sky, searching for a wish, praying for better tomorrows.
Until the day I lost him. He threw us away with one hasty decision--a decision that changed us forever.
There once was a boy, and I loved him.
And for a few breaths, a few whispers, a few moments, I think he loved me, too.

Review by Lisa Kane
I met my best friend in the checkout lane of a grocery store. And my life was never the same again.
Make no mistake, there are parts of this book that are no picnic to read. It is edgy and touches so many times on drug abuse, and domestic violence and self destruction. But it remains a book about hope and redemption and second, third and maybe fourth chances.
Alyssa Marie Walters and Logan Francis Silverston both live in True Falls, Wisconsin. She on the better side of town, he on the side that has the walls crumbling. Her mom is a high powered lawyer making bank and his mom is a junkie. His dad is the local supplier, and he supplies both Lo's dad and Lo himself. Lo thinks he can handle his use of drugs but he needs something to escape the world he lives in.
When these two meet, Alyssa is the cashier who saves Lo from the utter embarrassment of being short on paying for his groceries. Seems his mother used up their debit card and left them penniless again. Alyssa helps him out and the two become friends. She is more than aware of his home situation, his knack for running through girls like water and his love of drugs. Besides, it turns out his brother Kellan is dating her sister Erika. But she is his best friend and has his back in every situation. He is her anchor, in a world where her mother's indifference to her is the only love she is shown.
I could've been someone worthy of loving, and she would've allowed me to love her too.
In a different world maybe. But I only had the here and now, where Alyssa was my best friend.
I was lucky enough to have her in that form.
Logan dreams of more-he is a fantastic chef and he dreams of opening his own place. He dreams of having a family and showing them the things he never had. But these are only dreams. Alyssa is a talented pianist and dreams of playing her music. She longs for her father's attention, in spite of all the times he's a no show to visit her. But still they dream. He is her Lo and she is his High-his nickname for him from their favorite meeting place a billboard way up high.
"I love that. We should open a restaurant, toss a piano inside, and call it the AlyLo."
"Or, LoAly," I smirked.
All of that is in the very beginning of this story. But things happen in life that break us down, that rob us of our spirits. Cue the wet eyes, the thumping of my heart, the stomach plummets. These are the parts that define this book. Oh the heartbreak and the emptiness..
For a moment we were us again. For a moment she was the fire that kept my cold heart warm at night. For a moment she was my savior. My safe haven. My bright, beautiful High.
There is so much to this story-so many different stories really. Logan and Alyssa, Kellan and Erika's. So many trials and tests and failures. But there is also hope that somehow they will all find their way back to each other.
That was the thing about life: even when the days faded to black, you were always given another chance, a second moment to try again to rise from the ashes.
