Blog tour: The Impact of You by Kendall Ryan

 Synopsis

A New Adult Romance from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kendall Ryan.

Needing an escape from her past, Avery chooses a college where no one knows her. Keeping a low profile was the plan, falling for the intense frat boy, Jase wasn’t. Yet she can’t deny how alive she feels when he’s near. Even as common sense implores her to stay away, her body begs her to get closer.

Jase, numb from his own family drama, has grown bored with weekends fueled by nameless girls and countless bottles when he meets Avery. Helping her cope with her past is better than dealing with the bullshit his own life’s served up. Determined to drive away the painful secret she’s guarding, he appoints himself her life coach, and challenges her to new experiences. Getting close to her and being the one to make her smile are simply perks of the job.

But when Avery’s past boldly saunters in, refusing to be forgotten, can Jase live with the truth about the girl he’s fallen for?

Recommended for 17+ due to mature themes and sexual content.

 4 Star Review

Avery wants to leave her recent troubles and her past behind. Way behind. As naïve as she has been, a few stupid mistakes ruined her reputation and made her an easy target for the haters. She has some abandonment issues (her dads adopted her at an early age, but she has always wondered about her birth mother. She starts college determined to be a different person- slate wiped clean. Her new best friends at school Noah and Madison  insist on dragging her to a frat party. She feels a little out of place but finds herself locking eyes with one gorgeous guy-enter Jase*.

Jase is the frat’s bad boy-he loves some chosen girl for one night, sometimes two (he never lets them have any pre-conceived notions of a relationship) and he moves on. He had one relationship in his life, a conniving witch named Stacia.  They are neighbors from back home; he has drifted back and forth with her- not for love, but more from convenience. Jase recently broke things off with  her again, not that she thinks he won’t be back. His parents are wealthy, his dad travels constantly, and his mom, well she has some problems of her own.

Avery and Jase could light up a small city with the electricity they generate. They share a conversation; both acknowledging to themselves they have some kind of instant connection that could lead to more.  Avery’s friends freak out and fill her in on Jase’s reputation and she wonders if he thinks a casual hook up is in his future with her.

“Lord help me. I’m going to fall on my ass. And then my ass will fall out of my pants.”

Turns out they share a class on human sexuality (ironic huh?) and over a cup of coffee, Jase manages to find out Avery’s never had the big “O”, nor has she had a guy visit her south of her navel. Although there was some action with her former boyfriend Brent (and she winces whenever she thinks of him) she has never gone all the way. Jase is determined to push her comfort zone-he appoints himself her life coach. He dares her to do things she wouldn’t normally do, and she feels a little more empowered. They hang out together and begin to trust each other enough to let the other see their real persona, not what they let others see.

“I buy whole albums, not individual songs. I’m not afraid of commitment, babe.”

Eventually the “friends only” lines are crossed and they admit their feelings to each other.  Jase’s ex makes sure she stirs the pot and does her bitchy best to get Jase back. An acquaintance from Avery’s past threatens her new found security. How will Jase react if he found out what she is hiding? Can their relationship survive someone’s worst nightmare being exposed?

I really enjoyed Ryan’s latest book. I loved the change in the dynamics of their relationship; from two strangers who share an attraction to a couple united in their insecurities.  They both yearn for that connection, to let the other in despite their fears of betrayal. Several times they both disappointed me, I wanted to shake them and make them open up about their secrets. But fictional characters never do what we want and I had to keep reading. This one is well worth the journey.
