Adaline Morgan is the love of Emmit Lewis' life. He is an up and coming race car driver and they have been in each other's lives since grade school. Emmit knows two things-he will be the best in NASCAR and Adaline will be his wife.
Adaline Morgan.
The love of my life ever since the day she pushed me on the play ground in elementary school for pulling her pigtails.
The day he wins a huge race is the same day he asks Addie to marry him. But Addie has wanted to follow her own dreams and traveling ten months a year on the race car circuit means she won't have her dreams come true. So she has to break both their hearts in order to have a chance to be the best at what she wants to do.
"As much as I want to be with you I can't give up my own dreams."
Three years later, things are very different. Addie fast tracked her way through nursing school. She's visiting her parents and is about to see Emmit for the first time since they broke up. No avoiding him, since her father is Waldo Morgan, Emmit's crew chief. The years since they've been apart have brought huge changes in Emmit's life. He is now the #1 ranked NASCAR driver, has a ton of money and fame and is the biggest manwhore off the race track. He isn't looking for love, but he loves a casual hook up.
I was back in Texas, and those old feelings bubbled up. Anytime that happened, I usually found the closest girl and tried to push the memories away with a quick fuck.
Their reunion is not what Addie hoped it would be-Emmit has never really understood nor forgiven her for leaving him.
Both say things they don't mean. Women are everywhere around Emmit and it's clear he has been sampling what they've been offering.
"It seems to me though you weren't that heartbroken if you started bringing whores to your bed every night."
But the thing I loved about this story-once they both drop their tough exteriors and admit that they have never gotten over the other-things move quickly. There is no unnecessary drama; the story doesn't drag on and on with contrived plots. That's not to say things go smoothly. There is an unscrupulous assistant that may want to get her hooks into Emmit and there is a bit of a mystery in the story line too. Someone isn't happy to see the two lovers reunited and will do anything to break them up.
But there is a ton of steam and sweet moments and a little heart break too. All the things that go into a good romance that make you keep reading.
"The rush I've always longed for and got from racing, is nothing compared to the rush I get when we make love. Or when you tell me you love me. You. Are. My. Life."
EXCERPT:
Excerpt One
Opening the door, I smiled. Adaline was standing there
with an umbrella over her head as the rain came down steadily. “Hey. I had to
ask which one was your bus. You’ve gotten a different one.”
My smile faded some as I nodded. “Yeah, well a lot of
things are different now.”
Adaline’s face fell as she asked, “May I come in?”
“Um, yeah but Robert’s here and—”
Robert pushed past me and waved to Adaline. “Hey,
Adaline! Great seeing you again. I’m headed back to the hauler, Emmit. See ya
later.”
Slowly shaking my head, I shot daggers at my so-called
best friend.
Lola barked and Adaline let out a gasp. “Oh, my gosh.
There’s a dog!”
“Always were observant, Adaline.”
Adaline shot me a dirty look as she slowly nodded.
“Well anyway, I’m sorry Robert ran off. I’ll let him know he can come back.”
Adaline turned and walked off as I squeezed my eyes
shut and cursed under my breath. “Fuck!” I hissed through my teeth. Stepping
out into the rain, I called for her. “Adaline, wait. I’m sorry, if you want to
come in, you’re more than welcome to.”
Turning around slowly, Adaline raised an eyebrow.
“Anyone else in there?”
I didn’t even care I was getting wet. “Like who?” I
asked with a confused look.
With a shrug, Adaline walked back over to me and
started up the steps as I stepped back in and told Lola to sit. Adaline stepped
into my bus and looked around as her eyes widened in surprise as she glanced
back toward the bedroom. “Oh, I don’t know, Cookie maybe?”
Holy living hell.
Adaline was jealous.
