Excerpt

My eyes opened, my pulse spiked, my nipples ached, my sex throbbed, and my skin was damp.
I’d had another freaking dream.
“God, this sucks. This fucking sucks,” I whispered into the dark.
I turned, trying to beat it back, finding it difficult at night, the dream so fresh, so real, and Ham in bed down the freaking hall.
I tossed, considered getting out my toy and taking care of business but Ham was down the hall. He slept like me, hard and deep. I didn’t know him to wake up in the middle of the night but, with my luck, I wasn’t taking chances.
Nina suggested I be quiet while I took care of business but that was impossible because my toy was not quiet and, well, I wasn’t either. I wasn’t loud but I made noises. Who didn’t?
I didn’t know if I could squelch them and I was too afraid to try.
I turned then tossed and it didn’t leave me.
Basic needs.
Ham’s words hit me at the same time it hit me I had them, too.
Basic needs.
Oh yes. I had them, too.
“Damn,” I whispered.
It was then Nina’s words came to me.
Roll the dice.
“Oh God,” I moaned.
Except for that disastrous night at The Dog, Ham had not once spent the night somewhere else.
And, if memory served (and I knew it did), he had a high libido. When we were together, we would go out and do stuff, chat, cuddle, goof around.
But we had a lot of sex.
Even knowing my mind forced by my desires, my need, was leading me through a ludicrous rationalization, I threw the covers back and got out of bed.
Then I sat back down on the bed.
“What am I doing?” I asked the dark.
Roll the dice, Nina urged.
I could roll the dice. Just that. Roll the dice.
Ham could say no. He could turn me away. That would be mortifying but I was already dealing with tough crap with regards to Ham on a day-to-day basis. I could live with that.
Or, if I rolled the dice, we both could understand we knew what this was and we could give each other something.
I pushed up from the bed and headed to the door.
“This is crazy, stupid, scary,” I whispered.
I still opened the door and walked down the hall to Ham’s room.
I stopped at his door.
Was I going to do this?
I opened his door.
I guessed I was.
I moved to his bed. He was on his side, facing me. He had the blinds open and a hand shoved under his pillow. The covers were to his waist and he had nothing on up top. Not unusual. If it was cold, Ham would put on pajama bottoms but mostly he slept nude.
Even in the dark, he was hot.
I sat on the side of his bed and he jerked awake, sitting up, his hand flashing out and curling, hard and tight, around the back of my neck as I gasped.
He came fully awake. His hand didn’t leave me but it relaxed and he growled sleepily, “Jesus, fuck, you scared the fuckin’ shit outta me.”
And I would. I hadn’t thought about it but the last time someone snuck into his room while he was sleeping, they’d been wielding an ax.
“God, Ham, I’m sorry. I didn’t think,” I whispered, lifting a hand and putting it on his chest, feeling the crisp hair there, wanting to slide my fingers through so badly, my mouth watered with the need.
His hand slid to the side of my neck.
“You okay?” he asked.
“No,” I answered.
“You sick?” he asked.
“No,” I answered.
“What’s up, baby?”
Before I lost my courage, I blew on the dice and let fly.
In other words, I leaned into him, aiming fortunately accurately, and my mouth hit his.
His body stilled.
I touched my tongue to his lips.
His mouth opened.
My tongue slid inside.
Then I was on my back in his bed, his arms around me.

3.5 Star Review by Allison East

Bound to the Past was great story. This book is a romantic suspense, and it takes you on a crazy, twisty journey from the get go.

Sara was the heroine and I really enjoyed her character. She is super sweet, and cares so much for everyone. She would give a homeless person the shirt off her back- without even a question. And one night after getting a flat- a stranger helps her out with it and she is intrigued by him, because he looks new in town- and after he leaves she heads on her way to the store- but on her way back from there, she sees the mysterious mans motorcycle crashed on the side of the road and she goes to him. Little does she know, he is Jack Turner- the towns bad boy that has been gone 10 years after he supposedly kills his adoptive father, which from the beginning I can sense that might not be true. And after she finds him she is changed.

Sara lets Jack stay with her until he can get on his feet and find out the truth. But he has lost his memory- and its going to take much more than Sara helping him to figure out why he came back.  And of course, Sara is attracted to him- the feeling was mutual, but this Jack who has lost his memory is a different Jack. The real Jack is a stone face man, with no emotions- ruthless in every way. This Jack- who has lost his memory, is different. As the story goes on, Sara finds friendship with jack- and a little bit of a sexual relief to the tension that was built up- only Sara wants more. And it seems like the more time Sara spends with Jack, the more she likes him, and ultimately falls for him.

“She really was in love with him. Sara didn’t know how, didn’t know when, but it had happened. Heaven help her, she’d fallen hopelessly in love with Jack Turner, and she was willing to pay the consequences.”

And then there is Jack- god love him, without his memory, straight into a town where everyone hates him for the supposed crime he committed. And Sara is the only person in Starville that isn’t judging him or hating on him, because even though she knows the story- she can’t believe its true. He wants his memory back, and to get back to Chicago where his ID says he is from. But Sara offered him a place when everyone else turned him away.

“Sara wasn’t pretty. She was beautiful. Well, maybe not in the conventional way or the classic sense of the word, but there was definitely something about her - something he couldn’t quite put his finger on.

But then it becomes hard for Jack to deny his feelings after a while. But then after he discovers part of his past, it becomes clear he is too dangerous for Sara- and he needs to stay away from her.

I liked this book. I loved watching the characters interact with each other. I love the suspense part of the story- I had no idea what was going to happen. The story was well-written and a good read. And I look forward to more from this author.

~ Excerpt ~

After driving for a couple of miles, Sara took a right turn to enter a tree-lined country road. It was narrow, poorly paved, and a little bumpy, but it was a familiar shortcut she used often to get quickly into town. In fact, after living in big cities for so many years, sheʼd grown to appreciate its quiet isolation…until she heard a loud pop and felt a jerking from the steering wheel.

“Oh, no. No, no, no!” …Not a flat tire! Not this late at night, and not on such a remote road! Before she finished that thought, the car started to swerve and thump. Great. Just great. Sara had no choice but to pull off on the side of the road and get out of the car to assess the situation. Yep, it was definitely a flat tire.
A grunt slipped from her lips. For a moment, she debated calling her friend Brent for help but pushed that thought away. He had better things to do than rushing to her help every time she was in trouble. Besides, it was time she learned to do things by herself. Changing a tire couldnʼt be too hard, right? If other people did it, so could she. She only hoped the dull light from the few working street lamps would be enough for her to see, because the last thing she needed was to have to hold a flashlight while attempting to change her first tire.
Sara had just opened the trunk and grabbed the jack when she heard the loud rumble of an engine. She turned around with a relieved smile―but it faded as soon as she saw the huge, dark motorcycle approaching. She didnʼt know anyone who owned one like that in Starville.
“Awesome,” she mumbled. The only person coming by had to be a complete stranger. Her heart immediately sped at the implications of that thought. It was late at night, the road was dark, and she was about to be all alone with a stranger.
Whatever, silly. This was Starville. People here knew and helped each other. Yet she couldnʼt help sucking in a harsh breath as the motorcycle slowed down. If anything, she was still holding the jack. Probably not the most perfect weapon, but itʼd sure come in handy if this guy was coming with the wrong idea in mind.
“Need help?” the strangerʼs deep voice asked curtly as he killed the engine.
Squinting her eyes to focus them in the dim light, Sara swallowed hard. Screw the help; she could change the darn tire herself. “No, thank you. Iʼm sure I can”—the man slid off the bike and walked toward her—“manage,” she finished in a gasp as he stepped into the light.
He was a stranger, all right. Probably the most dangerous-looking one sheʼd ever seen. He was tall. Very tall. So much so that she had to tilt her head all the way back to look at his face, seeing as he towered over her five four by nearly a foot. Everything about him was dark, from the jeans he was wearing to the charcoal T-shirt and black leather jacket. Even his short hair and the faint stubble on his jaw were dark―not to mention his expression. But his eyes… Holy crap! They had to be the only bright thing about him. In fact, sheʼd never seen such a startling, intense shade of green before. And never had she thought that so much pain could be contained in a single pair of eyes. They looked…lost. Tormented.
Sara took a deep breath. She could have sworn this man had leaped straight out of one of her novels. Which wasnʼt necessarily a good thing.
Without a word, her dark knight walked to the car and crouched in front of the tire. Sara forced herself out of her stunned stupor. “I, uh, have a flat.” Duh.
He turned his head and gave her a long, piercing stare that made her squirm with unease. Then he stood, took off his leather jacket, and tossed it carelessly at the bike. “Got a spare?”
“I think itʼs in the trunk. But, look, you donʼt have to help…” Too late. He was already removing the spare tire and tools from the trunk.
Oookay. Sara stepped closer and passed him the jack, her nerves so tense that she almost dropped it in the process. “Thank you so much. I was going to change it myself, but I’ve never done it before, and thereʼs no telling how long it would have taken,” she said, trying to make conversation. For no reason, apparently, since he flat-out ignored her.
She watched him as he jacked up the car, fascinated by the play of muscles rippling in his arms and down his back. Oh, boy. She cleared her throat. “Iʼve never seen you ʼround here before. Are you new in town?”
His eyes darted to hers as he removed the flat tire and set it aside. “Kinda.”
Kinda? Sara frowned. While he did speak with a slight drawl, it wasnʼt pronounced enough to determine whether it might be from Texas. Not to mention he spoke too little. “Are you going to stay in Starville for a while?”
“Not sure yet.”
Hmm. Maybe he was on a business trip? Sara glanced at his motorcycle, then back at him. He definitely didnʼt strike her as a businessman. Perhaps he was here to visit a friend? Or a girlfriend? Her frown deepened as she tried to picture him with someone she knew in town. “My name is Sara, by the way. Sara Milano. I live a couple of miles from here.”
He shot her another brief look, then stood all of a sudden. Sara stared at him but didnʼt realize heʼd finished changing the tire until he placed the tools and the flat back into the trunk. He closed it with a slam and turned around, wiping his hands on the legs of his jeans. Her gaze followed the action in a daze. “I, um, have wipes in my purse, if you want.”
“Iʼm fine.”
Of course. Dark knights didnʼt care for sanitary wipes. And she should probably stop calling him that and ask what his name was. “Thank you so much again for your help, Mr.―”
“No problem.”
Sara suppressed an eye roll as he walked past her. Seriously? Now he was just being weird. Maybe he was running from the law and didnʼt want her to know his name. Then again, she doubted an outlaw would stop to help a damsel in distress. Oddly enough, though, his clipped answers and brush-off attitude only made her want to know more about him. He…drew her. The mystery writer in her was totally intrigued by his enigmatic persona.
She followed him quietly to his motorcycle, which she now noticed was a black-and-silver Harley Davidson. He was already putting his jacket back on. “Iʼm going to town for ice cream. Would you like to join me?” she blurted as he straddled the bike. “Itʼs the least I can do to thank you.”
Her offer must have surprised him, because his gaze snapped back to hers, and he raised an eyebrow. Sara was pretty sure she even saw a glint of amusement flash in his eyes. Evidently, dark knights didnʼt care for ice cream, either.
“I could buy you a drink somewhere, if you prefer,” she tried again. Yeah, a drink sounded better. He looked like a whiskey kind of guy―something dark and strong.
This time a ghost of a smile played at the right corner of his mouth, lifting it ever so slightly and revealing a dimple that caused a funny flutter in her stomach. Lord help her, she was a sucker for dimples!
“Maybe another time.”
Sara sighed, trying to hide her disappointment as he backed up the motorcycle and started the engine. “All right, then. Thanks again.” It was the story of her life. Every good-looking man who crossed her path ended up bolting faster than she could say good-bye. With a little wave, she started walking back to her car.
“Sara?”
She stilled. Her pulse zinged in response to the gravelly tone in which he said her name. And that slow, sexy drawl of his! She took another deep breath before turning around. “Yes?”
“Get that tire fixed as soon as you can. Itʼs not safe driving on a spare.”
“Oh.” Wow. That was the longest sentence he’d uttered since he’d arrived, and it wasnʼt even close to what Sara wished heʼd said. And to think that for a moment sheʼd hoped he might have changed his mind and decided to accept her invitation. Talk about dumb. “Iʼll do it first thing in the morning. Thank you.”
He nodded, then rode away just as mysteriously as heʼd arrived.
And she didnʼt even know his name.
***
Ice cream.
When was the last time someone had offered him ice cream? He didnʼt even remember. Probably as long ago as the last time someone had looked at him the way that pretty girl had, as if he were a decent human being. And, God, heʼd been tempted to go with her. To forget, at least for a little while, who he was.
He shook his head hard, crushing that thought. He had no time for this crap. He had enough on his plate already. He was back.
Back in Texas. Back in Starville, the one place heʼd sworn never to see again. But, hell, now that he was so close to getting what heʼd been working so hard for, he was excited to be here.
Heʼd been waiting for this day for so long―planning it, craving it―and he was determined not to let anything or anyone distract him from his objective. Finally, he would have his revenge on the people heʼd learned to loathe with his entire being during the last ten years.
His jaw instinctively clenched. His fists tightened on the handgrips as the motorcycleʼs speed increased. Blood pounded through his veins with anticipation. Oh, yeah, revenge was going to taste so sweet. Heʼd make sure of that. Only then would he finally be free to move on with his life and put this damn town behind him forever.
And this time, he would not look back.

4.5 sensational stars!!!
Review by Nicole Lorenzo

Sig Locke has followed the family tradition of becoming a cop just like his father and brothers. What he wants more than anything is to take his career to the next level. When Sig pulls over to help a girl on the side of the road he finds a lot more than a damsel in distress. Tommi Lawrence with her legs for days and big green eyes leave Sig speechless. He immediately wants to do anything to help her and find out more about her. What he finds out could be the key to advancing his career. Tommi is the girlfriend of a well-known drug dealer and all around criminal. What Sig can’t figure out is why a girl like her would bother with scum like Lance Tonin.

“Tommi, with the body of a porn star and the name of a tomboy, just might be the perfect woman.
If only she wasn’t dating a damn criminal.”

Tommi Lawrence has so many secrets, her secrets have secrets. She has a plan in motion and dating Lance Tonin is the only option she has right now. Everything is in order until she meets Sig. When he shows up on the side of the road to help her, at First Tommi is hesitant, but having no other choice, agrees to Sigs assistance. From that first meeting she can’t get him out of her mind, but knows she doesn’t have a choice, she can’t afford any distractions. It becomes near impossible to stay away from him when Sig is suddenly a part of her everyday life. Sig shows every intention of getting to know her and he swears that Tommi can trust him, but Tommi doesn’t trust anyone.

“The more familiar we become, the more risk there is to me, to my plan. So really, as much as parts of me are dying to know more, aching to feel more, this is for the best.
If only it felt like it was for the best.”

The more time they spend together the more it becomes harder and harder for Tommi to keep her secrets hidden. Little by little Sig is cracking at her walls and she starts to share little bits and pieces of her real self with him. But the little that Sig does knows doesn’t even begin to touch the surface of what she is hiding. Lines have crossed between them that change everything, and if Tonin ever found out heads would roll.

“He was forbidden before. He’s flat out dangerous now. He could ruin everything. Get people hurt, himself included. And that’s a risk I can’t take, no matter how tempting he is.”

Sig wants nothing more than to save this girl. She deserves so much more than a drug dealing criminal as a boyfriend. He knows she’s with him for some reason, he just can’t figure out why, or what he has over her to make her stay. What had started out as just a job has turned into so much more. Tommi is going to need Sig more than ever when someone important to her is taken!!

*Due to publishing contracts M.Leighton had to keep this part of Sigs story at 65,000 words. Because of this she is going to release the second part of the story FREE of charge. All you have to do is sign up for her newsletter!

M. Leighton’s website: www.mleightonbooks.com.
On 10/14/14 it will be delivered to you in the format of your choice!!

I have been looking forward to Sigs story since the very first book in this series! Boy oh Boy I was not disappointed!!  M. Leighton definitely outdid herself with this one! My anxiety was so high the more and more I read! It’s suspenseful, sexy and quite mysterious. The chemistry between Tommi and Sig is hot and instantaneous. But the secrets they are both keeping from each other make a real relationship between them most impossible. For one thing Tommi is dating Tonin. You know she has motives, but they haven’t been revealed yet. For the life of me I can’t figure it out and I love that! I love when the author has the capability to make the readers guess and question the outcome. I will be waiting on pins and needles for the conclusion of their story that will be released on 10/14/14!!!

Her lips are still curved when she turns her attention back to me. Something about the moment hits me like a punch to the gut. I think for a second that I could stand here and stare at her, just enjoy her smile and her happiness for hours. Days, maybe. But I can’t. We can’t. So, instead, I brush a clump of mud from the end of her nose. “Have fun?” “I did. Thank you. This was so good for him.” “And you.” “And me,” she concedes. “You can be the real you around me anytime. I won’t tell a soul.” “So you prefer this?” “Oh, hell yeah! I don’t need glamorous. Or proper.” “I’m not proper.” “You forget that I heard your…expressiveness that day on the side of the road. And it didn’t consist of ‘darn’ or ‘golly gee’. But I haven’t heard anything like that come out of your mouth since then.” “Ladies aren’t supposed to talk that way, according to Lance.” “I don’t want a lady. I want a woman. One who knows her own mind. One who wears what she’s comfortable in, one who says what she’s thinking.” I take a step closer. I can’t help myself. Her scent draws me in. Even covered in mud, she smells like sexy sunshine. “I want the woman who kisses like she’s on fire and makes me feel like I’m the only one who can put her out.” “Sig,” she begins. I break in to cut her off. I know her objections. And I know how much I don’t want to hear them. “I’m just being honest. I’m not even touching you.” Her eyes are glued to mine, a damn near irresistible gravity pulling us together. “It’s not like you can anyway. I mean, we’re in public. With my little brother. What could you possibly touch?” I reach down and smear my hand in mud. With her eyes locked on mine, I reach between us and flatten my palm on her chest, right over her heart. “This. I’d touch this.”

“She’s just being nice,” Kayden says gazing down at me. His hair is ruffled and his jawline is scruffy and he looks so happy. “And it’s nice… that she wants to be so nice... it could be worse than an overnice mother.” “Yeah, I know.” I sigh, knowing he’s right, that it could be worse, that I could have a mother like his mother. “I just wish she’d be just a little bit less embarrassing.” I raise my hand and make a pinching gesture with my fingers. “Maybe just a teeny tiny bit.” “Yeah, I doubt that’s ever going to happen.” Kayden slips his shirt off and chucks it aside. His jeans ride low on his hips, giving me a view of his abs and chest that is crisscrossed with scars. “I did find it funny when she kept cracking jokes all through dinner about how she thinks we’re going to end up getting married.” He kneels down on the mattress, nudging my knees open with his knees until I spread open my legs for him. “Oh God.” Shaking my head, I cover my face with my hands. “I’m glad you find it funny because I’m sure most guys would be running for their lives.” The mattresses moves as he leans over me and puts a hand on each side of my head. I crack my fingers apart and look at him. He’s been so much happier since he put the past behind him. He seems to breathe freer, smile more, and it’s probably the most beautiful sight I’ve ever seen. “Well, just make sure you really want this,” I say as he moves one of my hands away from my eyes. “Because you still have time to run.” He shakes his head, his tongue slipping out of his mouth to wet his lips. “No running here,” he whispers in a raspy voice that I know only means one thing—he wants me. “Ever.” He moves my other hand away from my face then pins my arms above my head. A while ago, the movement would have sent my heart soaring and not in a good way. But now… well, it freaking soars like a bird high up in the sky never wanting to return to land ever. It soars because it’s free. It soars for him. “You want me,” I tease as he leans down to kiss me. “You’re right,” he says. “And then I want to give you your present.” “But you already gave me my present.” I pat my pocket where the tickets to the concert are that he gave me. He said it was for a redo of a night that should have been special, but he couldn’t give it to me then, but he was ready now to give me everything I deserve—his words not mine. My mom practically fainted when he said it. And me, well I think I fell in love with Kayden even more. “Yeah, but that one was only the first part.” He kisses me, then softly bites my bottom lip before he leans back for air. “There’s more,” he breathes against my lips, coming in for another kiss. “But you have to wait.” “Until when?” I wonder, my heart skipping a beat as his hands wander for the button of my jeans. “Until we’re done with this.” He gives me a wicked smile as he flicks my button undone.
