5 star review by Jennifer Skewes

I'm not sure that words can even describe how amazing Unbreakable by Rebecca Shea is.  It is a beautiful, very emotional, intense and heart breaking story about love, healing and hope.

Jess lost her mother at a young age, so it has always been just her and her dad.  But he has never been around the way a father should.  He is the fire chief and has basically thrown himself into his job.  Jessica's neighbors, the Garcia's have been taking care of Jessica, when her father cannot be around.  They are her family and have always looked out for her.  She is best friends with Ava and has had a crush on her brother Gabe for as long as she can remember.  Jess and Ava are now graduating high school and Gabe is home for the summer.  And the sparks between the two of them begin to fly.  Neither one of them have forgotten about the kiss that they shared over a year ago.  And now that Jess is out of school he knows that it is time to finally tell her how he feels about her, in hopes that she has the same feelings for him.

Everything is going great for Gabe and Jess.  They have the most perfect, loving and sweet relationship.  Gabe is romantic and loving and works hard to provide for the future that he plans on having with Jess.  He will do what it takes to give her everything she wants, including a happily ever after with  him.  They are both so in love with each other and Gabe promises that he will always love her protect her.  But sometimes things are out of your control and when you least expect tragedy strikes.  Just as Gabe is working hard and planning out his future with Jess, something happens that completely shatters their world.  It was so unexpected and will break your heart, but it's everything that comes next that will completely rip your heart out.

Jess has been through the unimaginable and her only way to deal with it is to run.  She has a family and boyfriend that love her and want to protect her and take care of her.  But right now she needs to escape it all in order to move forward.  Gabe is completely shattered after this tragic "event"  takes place.  He blames himself.  He should have been there to protect her like he promised.  If he would have been there then they wouldn't be where they are now.  Gabe wants to help her, be there for her and tries to be understanding of what she needs, but right now all he knows is that the one girl he has ever loved, and WILL ever love is pushing him away, and he is not sure how to pull her back.

Gabe was such an amazing hero.  He was caring, sweet, protective and very loving.  He loved Jess completely and knew that she was it for him.  He never gives up hope and I loved him for that.  I loved Jess and my heart broke for her for what she went through. She was sweet and caring and so loving.   She made one of the hardest decisions of her life at one point and while I wasn't happy with the decision I completely understood it.  Then there was another character who was introduced and I will admit I wasn't a big fan in the beginning.  But towards the end he will completely blow you away and you will see just how amazing he is.

Unbreakable is told in alternating POV which I love.  It gives you a better understanding and connection with all the characters.  I don't want to give away too much of this story.  But I can tell you that Gabe and Jess's story was amazing.  After that shocking twist, we see how it affected not only Jess but everyone around her.  The story was about how her decision and what happened to her and how it affected more than just her.  She did what she had to do to be able to move on and find that happy place in her life again, even if that meant pushing the people away who loved her the most.  She needed to do it in order to heal.  But we also see how her decision also affected her relationship with Gabe and how it affected him as well.   Gabe loved her and never stopped giving up hope that one day everything would be the way it was supposed to be; the two of them together forever.  Will Gabe and Jessica find their way back to each other, or will that one tragic night ruin them forever?

Unbreakable will make you happy, and smiling and all warm in fuzzy inside and then just shatter you next moment.  Everything that happened to Jess and what came after was so real and raw and so intense.  You felt as if you were there going through it all with them.  There were some moments where I cried and then moments where I just sobbed, and yes I am talking a real ugly cry.  This book touched me on so many levels.  It is an emotional roller coaster of a ride and one that is worth every minute and every tear.  It is one of those books that will stay with your forever.  For her debut novel, Rebecca Shea did a fantastic job.  Gabe and Jess's journey will rip your heart out and completely shred it, but Ms. Shea did a wonderful job piecing it all back together again and leaving you with a smile in the end.   A must read!  Just be sure to have tissues handy.

Three Chicks interview with Rebecca Shea

Three Chicks:  When did you know that you wanted to become a writer?

Rebecca:  I’ve always been a writer. I didn’t decide until late 2012 that I actually wanted to publish that work. It’s scary to put yourself out there, feeling vulnerable, but in the end, I believed in this story, so I said “what the hell” and just decide to forge ahead and publish it!

Three Chicks:  Who inspired you to be a writer?

Rebecca:  So many inspirations from teachers, friends, to other authors. It wasn’t until I started reading the New Adult genre that I really determined this was what I wanted to do.

Three Chicks:  Unbreakable was an amazing story that dealt with a very sensitive issue. Where did you get the inspiration/idea for this story?

Rebecca:  And what, if any research went into it? I honestly don’t know where the story came from. It was
always Gabe and Jess. The rest of the story just came to me. There was research that went into a few of the scenes. The scene with Jess and the psychologist was difficult. One of my beta readers works in this field and gave me a lot of guidance into Jess’ emotions.

Three Chicks:  I know how much I cried while reading Unbreakable-how hard was it to write some of those tough scenes (the goodbye scene was a tough one for me) and how many boxes of tissues did you go through while writing?

Rebecca:  There were scene’s where I cried for sure. The hardest one for me was when she was leaving and her dad finally talks to her. That was a tear-jerker for me. Or Gabe on the steps—crushed me. I
don’t use tissues, I like to use my shirt sleeve (kidding). Definitely lots of tissues.

Three Chicks:  We know who Jess ended up with, but if you had to chose for yourself who would it be and why? ( tough choice I know )

Rebecca:  God, they both had such endearing qualities. I think I would choose Gabe. He is safe, comforting, and fiercely loyal. I love those qualities in a man.

Three Chicks:  What do you love to do when you are not writing?

Rebecca:  I have three kids, so I spend a lot of time on the sidelines of my son’s tackle football games, or wrestling tournaments, or at my daughter’s dance classes. If it’s just ‘me’ time, hiking, or spending quality time with the husband or drinks with girlfriends.

Three Chicks:  Do you have any rituals or routines that you do while writing; locking yourself in a room, listening to music...

Rebecca:  I need quiet. I can’t hear the voices in my head (sounds crazy doesn’t it?) talking if there are people talking or music. I cannot listen to music and write. I love music in the car or while I’m working out. Many songs inspire scenes for me to write, I just can’t listen to it and write simultaneously.

Three Chicks:  I know you are writing a story for the person Jess does not end up with, but do you have plans to write stories for Ava and Luke?

Rebecca:  A lot of people have asked about Ava. I *may* consider a short novella for her and Adrian, but I need to finish my second book first. I have some feisty readers who are wanting his story like yesterday ;)

Three Chicks:  Have your family and friends read your book and if so are you more nervous about them reading it, than anyone else?

Rebecca:  It’s so funny this question is on here. I just ‘outed’ myself to my parents and friends today. It’s scarier to put yourself out there especially to friends and family. Thus far, everyone has been very, very supportive. But yes, I’m still nervous about them reading it.

  4. Three Chicks and Their Books, of course!

Great interview...it's interesting that Rebecca just now told her family about what she does. Although, I've heard that a lot, that some authors in the romance genre will hide it from their families or won't let them read their books. Those are usually the REALLY spicy books! ;)
