Review: Fear Us by B. B. Reid

KEENAN
It’s been four years since I ran away—from home, my brother, and my maybe father. I created a life free of expectations while pretending I wasn’t being hunted by all of the above. I managed to stay under the radar all this time… or so I thought. When big brother shows up and saves my ass, I’m forced to face everything I left behind, including her.

SHELDON
It’s been four years since I became another statistic. I made a lot of mistakes when it came to Keenan Masters. The first was loving him at all. He took something from me the night he left, and when I told him I still loved him, he told me he’d always hate me. After that, I learned how to be okay… until he came back. Gone was the boy who always knew how to make me laugh, and in his place was a cold, arrogant monster.

5 Fantastic Dark as Night Stars!

Review by Lisa Kane

If I ever returned-if I ever saw her again-I would keep her-and I would make her sorry.

B B Reid's The Broken Love Series has quickly become one of my favorites. Fear Me and Fear You are Keiran and Lake's story and Fear Us is Keenan and Sheldon's. At the end of Fear You, Keenan was recovering from a double lung transplant as a result of his gunshot wounds. He is alone and angry. Sheldon found out that he slept with his chemistry teacher,  and broke up with him. It was the last straw for her and believe me after Keenan cheated on this camel as many times as he cheated on Sheldon, my back would have broken at least two sluts ago. But Keenan isn't going to go quietly in the night. First he crosses the line with Lake and brings the wrath of  Keiran upon him.

"My girl, Keenan."
"My mother, brother."
It was the last words I would speak to him for a long time.

Then he has a last encounter with Sheldon that will forever change her.

It's now four years later. Sheldon is just about to graduate from college. Lake, Keiran and Dash are very much a part of her life. No one has seen Keenan since the night he spent with Sheldon. Keiran tells her that he knows where Keenan is and is bringing him home. She's not sure how she feels about that. She's tried to move on and has spent the last year casually dating another guy, Eric Spencer.

His hard body was free of tattoos.
He came from a good, wholesome family.
He was kind, sweet and romantic.
And most importantly, he had not a disloyal bone in his body. We've dated for almost a year now and never had I suffered from jealousy or insecurity. He was perfect.

But Keenan being who he is, his smart ass ways are about to catch up with him. Enter Keiran at just the right moment.

Sheldon is about to have her world turned upside down when the ghosts of Keiran's past come back to haunt. At the same time, Keenan is back in Six Forks and things are about to get interesting...

Her love was a lie.
Love was just like that.
A lie.

Gone is the happy go lucky Keenan from books one and two. This new guy is hard as nails and more than a little sadistic. He blames Sheldon for just about every wrong in his life and is determined to make her pay. Some of his actions pushed my comfort zones almost too far. He doesn't just talk the psycho talk, he walks, skips and jumps it. He is bent on revenge and will make Sheldon pay.

I didn't see the knife, but I felt it at my throat. "If you say his name in my fucking presence again, I will end you."

There is a fine line between tormentor and abuser and there are one or two times when Keenan pushes that line about as far as it can stretch. He is in a dark place and blames the ones he loved, mostly Sheldon for what he has become.

"Keenan, please try to understand...you hurt me so much. Every time you were with them, I ached."
"Well, then you should feel satisfied. You paid me back in full."

He's turned his pain into hatred and is determined to make Sheldon pay for the monster he's become. But she is equally determined not to fall into that trap again-where she will allow him to have total control over her, regardless of how badly he treats her.

"You didn't even love me enough to fight for me. Instead, you ran away the first time I hurt you when I forgave you each time you broke my heart. I risked everything to be with you-my self-respect, my sanity, and my heart-and now you're asking me to risk it all again?"

Of course, what their minds tell them is far different than what their hormones want...and with this couple...hormones will always win!

This time Sheldon won't let him walk away and turn his back on those he loves, or those that love him. He may try, but will she let him succeed?

He was leaving.
How could he leave?
Why was I trying to stop him?

Not every mystery will be solved with this book, there are lots of loose ends that remain. Just when you think you've figured out who is behind everything, another mystery begins. But we still have another book coming and I'm sure most of our questions will be answered. Dash and Lake and Keiran remain solid rocks for Sheldon and although Keenan has tried to burn just about every bridge, they will never give up on him either.

I loved this latest installment and can't wait for Dash and Willow's story. These characters have evolved and matured and have changed so much since this series began. As much as I enjoyed reading about them in high school there is so much more to them as adults. B.B Reid has a gold mine with these characters. They have so many layers, and I'm not sure we will ever know why they do the deliciously wicked things they do. I only know I love reading about them!

EXCERPT:

“What’s going on?” Sheldon asked from her room door.
“Shouldn’t you be in bed?”
She lifted an eyebrow and propped a hand on her hip. “Shouldn’t you be running?”
I stepped into her space until my hips were pressed against hers and curled a finger around a glossy lock.
To a passing bystander, it would look like a simple embrace between lovers and not the assertion of power it was.
“I hope you have as much mouth when I have you alone and naked.”
“We’re alone now,” she challenged. “But you won’t be getting me naked, ever.”
“What I’m going to do to you won’t bear having witnesses. Nothing will give me more pleasure than punishing you past your limits. I’m going to make you scream for me, Shelly, and when you do, you’ll be begging.”
Just like you made me beg.
She rolled her eyes and scoffed. “You sound like your brother.”
“I am my brother.”
The grittiness in my tone was unrecognizable even to me. The proof of my claim lay in what I helped him do not twenty-four hours ago.
“I’m going to hurt you, Sheldon, and not just where it cuts deepest.” I touched her collarbone and then trailed a finger down her chest while cursing the gown for keeping me from touching her completely.
“So do you actually expect to just pick up where we left off?”
“Second chances can be deadly, but I set you free once. Now you’re mine.”
“I won’t love you again, Keenan. It’s not something I can survive a second time.”
I laughed because I didn’t know how else to react. We had unfinished business, but the only thing I felt for her was anger and lust. Love didn’t have any place here.
“I don’t want your love. I just want you.” I didn’t realize how true it was until I’d spoken the words.
“Isn’t that the same thing?”
“Not anymore,” I whispered reluctantly.
