I loved KM Golland's Temptation Series. Carly and Derek appeared in a few of the books in the series. Derek is Bryce's good friend. He's a Fire Chief and a good friend to Lucy, Bryce's sister. Carly is Alexis' best friend and has always been her rock. She's a receptionist at a elementary school. Although we saw them flirting and dating in the first series, we knew little about their relationship.

Carly is confidant, gorgeous and pretty care free. Her sense of style and humor seem to be her trademark. She enjoys sex, partying and shopping, and has a weird thing for mint sauce-like a real obsession with it. Although she envies her friend Alexis, and her loving relationship with her boyfriend Bryce, she knows that kind of relationship isn't in the cards for her. She was particularly close to her aunty who died in childbirth. Having kids is not in her future. Alexis' kids Charli and Nate fill any need for children in her life. A life that she has all mapped out.

My life was going to be free. Free from obstructions, free from drama and free from anchors that tied me to anyone or anything. Yep, I was an anchorless ship on her maiden voyage that never ended.

Carly meets Derek at a birthday party being given at Bryce's penthouse for Alexis' birthday. She is hit by the wall of lust that smacks her in her face.

My eyes dropped further down his body, spying light denim jeans which were riding low on his hips. Holy mother of vaginal spasms, those hips would fit perfectly in between my legs. I mentally took some measurements.

Derek is just as attracted to her and the two engage in verbal sex play, each trying to top the other.

"So, Carly," Derek said as he turned to face me, "I'm a little concerned." "Why?" I stammered, unsure as to why he would be worried. "Because, according to you, if I talk to you and you hear my voice, you could quite possibly die." He lifted one eyebrow and took a swig of his beer.

Mustering my semblance of Carly-is-the-shit, I placed my index and middle finger against wrist. "Nope, I teased, with a slight shake of the head, pausing for effect. "There's no need to worry. I feel a pulse. I'm still alive."

These two have a lot in common; both love to have fun, both love to party and both love sex. They start to casually see each other, but Carly is careful to keep her feelings in check. Intimacy and a serious relationship are not something she pictures with Derek. She knows she is developing feelings for him, but he is a mystery. He's estranged from his family; they are well to do and wanted him to follow in their footsteps. His choice of being a firefighter created a lot of turmoil with his family. He had a falling out with his brother that he won't talk about. And then there's something between him and Lucy, Bryce's sister. She is in a committed relationship with her girlfriend Nic and they have a child, Alexander, but Lucy seems to always know what Derek is up to, and the two of them constantly have their heads together, with whispered conversations. This all bothers Carly. Whenever she thinks she and Derek are getting close, there are underlying feelings of uneasiness that she picks up on. She knows something doesn't feel right, but just can't put her finger on it.

Just when things seem to be going right for them. Boom! Time for her intuition to be proven right that something was going on that she wasn't aware of. And it's big, it's massive. And I couldn't come to terms with it. I'm not going to spoil what it is, but before Derek met Carly he did something in the service of a friend, and I still can't help but shake my head. I have no problem with the end result, but the means to get that end result-nope, no can do...

"I'm not giving up on us." He placed a chaste kiss on my lips, causing a surge of emotions to envelop me completely. "I love you and I know you love me. We "are" and we always will be."

When things go kaboom in their relationship, Carly is more than a little blindsided. She thinks Derek can give all the lip service about loving her that he wants, but if the man can't walk the walk, save the talk.

Can they overcome her feelings? What can Derek do to show Carly that he is serious about her, and that what he did was before he met her and for the right reasons? I loved the angst and the humor in this story. Golland never fails to deliver. Although, I am left with a sick feeling about Derek and his actions to help out his friend, Derek and Carly give Bryce and Alexis' love story a run for its money.

I love a good epilogue and this one didn't disappoint!
