Review by Lisa Kane

I adore Drew and Fable Callihan so I will read anything that has the slightest mention of them. Safe Bet centers around Wade Knox and Sydney Walker. Fable just hired Sydney to be the nanny to her two kids, Autumn and Jacob. Sydney was desperate for this job. She 19, she's screwed up big time, pissed her parents off and is virtually homeless and penniless. This job is a life saver for her. But she's got to admit, she's more than a little star struck at Drew.

She's staring up at him, her lips slightly parted, her eyes wide. Full on awestruck, which is typical. He's a superstar. That's how most people look at Drew when they first meet him.
Wade is newly drafted to the 49ers but he's nervous about getting cut from the team. He knows this is his chance to change his life. He can finally make his dreams come true and help his mom out. She's struggled all her life and he wants to be able to give her the world. Nothing and no one can come distract him. Girls are fun, but he's in it just to enjoy himself. Sex is great, but he has no interest in relationships.

Sydney is intrigued by Wade and Fable seems to be playing matchmaker. But Sydney doesn't need to get involved with a player, and I mean that word in every sense.
He's Fable's brother's best friend.
He's twenty-two years old.
He's a newly chosen wide receiver for the 49ers.
He's single.
Fable thinks the world of him.

Although Wade and Sydney spend a lot of time with each other, it's usually surrounded by other players or Drew and Fable at the Callihan residence. But one night while they are out with the whole family, something happens and Drew and Sydney are photographed by the ever present paparazzi in a compromising position. The tabloids eat it up and life is becoming unbearable to Sydney.

It doesn't pass. A week goes by and it's all the tabloids can talk about.
Fable isn't happy about the papers making her look like the cheated on spouse and she comes up with a plan. What if Sydney and Wade were dating? The press would have a different story to follow and Sydney wouldn't look like the Naughty Nanny. Sydney knows her family is probably freaking out. She's tired of being the failure so she and Wade agree to a fake relationship. Wade feels like he owes Drew so much for taking him under his wing. Does this sham relationship remind you a little of One Week Girlfriend?

But of course the fake soon becomes the real. Things are complicated and messy and this is really bad timing. But the heart as well as all those other delicious parts wants what they want. Do Wade and Sydney have what it takes to move past their insecurities and make a very public relationship work?
"So we're in love now? Think the tabloids will buy it?"
