Release Blitz: The Crush by Penelope Ward

Title: The Crush
Author: Penelope Ward
Genre: Standalone Contemporary Romance
Release Date: February 22, 2021

BLURB

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new standalone, second-chance story of forbidden love…

It’s natural to want the one you can’t have. And for as long as I could remember, I’d secretly wanted my brother’s best friend, Jace.

He was six years older and always treated me like the sister he never had.

Fast forward a decade.

We were all in our twenties now. Jace had moved in with my brother, Nathan, and me to help us make ends meet after our parents died.

It was just the three of us—an odd family dynamic.

Living under our roof, Jace was as bossy and protective as ever.

But he certainly didn’t look at me like a sister anymore. That was what made things so complicated.

I was pretty much hot and bothered twenty-four-seven.

And he was torn.

The signs were subtle, at first. Like on movie night, I’d casually rest my leg against his, and he wouldn’t exactly shift away.

Still, I assumed he would never…go there.

Nathan would kill us.

The knowledge of that wasn’t enough to stop the inevitable, though.

Eventually our slow burn exploded.

But more than the physical attraction, we’d developed a strong connection.

We just couldn’t get caught, right?

That sounded simple.

Until it wasn’t.

This is a story of forbidden love, broken trust, and an unexpected second chance.

Review by Lisa Kane

Farrah Spade lives with her brother Nathan in Palm Creek, Florida. Nathan's best friend, Jace has been the object of Farrah's desires since she was a little kid. He and Nathan are more like brothers than best friends. When Farrah and Nathan's parents are tragically killed, Jace goes away for college. (there's a story there, but I'll let you read all about it yourself)

Absence only made Farrah's heart grow fonder, so when Jace moves back to Florida it's almost impossible for Farrah to stop her crush on him.

At twenty-seven, Jace was the boy I remembered lusting after, but even bigger and better.

Jace has moved in with Nathan and Farrah to help them out financially. He moved back to Florida to help his dad with his construction business. The six year difference between them doesn't seem so big to Farrah now that she's 21. But Jace has casual girlfriends and Farrah can only sit on the sidelines and eat her heart out.

But there are subtle changes, weird vibes that Farrah is picking up on. A casual touch between them that seems to linger, Jace's possessiveness when he thinks Farrah is going to meet a date, their legs rubbing against one another while watching TV, even though Jace's girlfriend is in the same room. But is this going anywhere?

Yep, it sure is! One line is crossed and the taboo of giving into the desire for Jace's best friend's little sister is too hard to resist. Nathan is more than a little protective of his relationship with Farrah, with his parents gone, she is his only family. You know it's a matter of time until Jace and Farrah are caught by Nathan. Jace does what he thinks is the right thing, only it's the wrong thing and will affect all their lives.

Fast forward three years later, Jace's mother has just passed away and he is back in Florida for his father. He has a girlfriend who he has brought back with him. A chance meeting will bring him face to face with Farrah. He hasn't seen her nor Nathan in all that time. Feelings that he pushed way down inside of him, are bubbling up to the surface at seeing her again.

But some hurts cut deeper than others, and Farrah is on longer the wide eyed, happy go lucky girl she once was, and it's obvious it's because of him.

"What's done is done. Life goes on. I survived. I've moved on. I don't like being reminded of a time I'd rather forget."

Ouch.

Nathan's life is completely changed and Jace feels like his life is upside down. Farrah is with someone else. Can Jace get back his friendship with Nathan and his relationship with Farrah?

The Crush is a sweet second chance at love. The story flows from the present to the past and back to the present. It's from both Jace and Farrah's POV's although the three years they were apart are only told by their thoughts, there's no actual accounting for that time. I have to admit, I love angst and I wish this story had a little more roller coaster moments to give my stomach flip flops, but there are some angsty parts, particularly in the past. Nathan is a bit of an ass in the beginning, but you find yourself hoping he will find his own happiness at some point. He's a great big brother and wants the best for Farrah.

None of the characters is perfect, even the secondary characters are flawed and that makes the story even better. These are people that hurt and bleed and screw up. That colors the blank canvass with a richness that carries the story. Maybe Nathan will get his own story and we can catch up with Farrah and Jace again?

"Farrah, this didn't turn out anything like it was supposed to, but honestly, has anything we've ever experienced together gone according to plan? That's how we do it."

Release Blitz: My Beautiful Neighbor by Piper Rayne

Release Date: February 23

Who’s the mystery woman who just walked into my brewery?

I’m not the only one from my Alaskan small town asking themselves that question. But I’m positive, I’m the only one in Sunrise Bay undressing the pretty blonde in my head. Everything about her, from her make-up to her high heels says she’s a fish out of water.

Whispers and speculations run rampant until the secret of who she is gets uncovered. Then the rumor mill goes into overdrive when she announces she’s staying to open a bookstore in the building next to mine—throwing a big wrench into my plans to buy that empty building.

I quickly find myself in a tug-of-war since my business partner/brother is upset she’s ruined the opportunity to expand our business. I try to keep my distance, but I’ve got one sister with a gossip column on the local radio station and two meddling grandmas setting me up as a tour director.

And now I kind of like the idea of our new neighbor staying. But small-town life isn’t for the weak—time will tell if she has what it takes to be one of us.

Review by Jen Skewes

My Beautiful Neighbor is the first book in this new spinoff series from m Piper Rayne.  If you read the Bailey's then you are aware that Dori's sidekick Ethel has many grandchildren whose life she plans on meddling in as well.  This is Cade, the eldest Greene's, story, bit it is also a look into the loves of all the Greene children.  I am so excited for this series.

Cade and his step-brother Jed own a bar in their small Alaskan town. When the owner of the store next to them passes, they hope to acquire the store so that they can expand.  Until they find out that their friend Clara, whose mother passed, its the only new owner of the store.  There's a new mystery woman in town and when Cade sees her, he cannot take her eyes off of her.  Then he finds out who she really is and what that means for him and his business.

Presley is the new irl in this little town.  She has secrets that will come out because, well this is a small town and they always do.  But surprisingly the one person that she thought would run her out of town has actually been very kind to her.  then there is Cade Greene, the guy she met on her first day in town.  The guy that she should probably stay away from, but try telling her body that. She cannot help react to him when he is near.  The attraction between the two of them is obvious.  But what they both do about it is up to them.  Cade isn't looking for a relationship and while Presley is here to stay, but her focus is on her store.  Will the chemistry between them eventually die down?  Probably not!!  Will a friends with benefits relationship be an option for them?  We all know how those work out, but who will end up with the broken heart?

I loved this book.  It is filled with the fun and whimsical moments that we all love from Piper Rayne.  There is humor, witt, and meddling but also the emotional side to this story as well.  Cade has a huge wall up around his heart, and for understandable reasons.  But breaking down that wall and getting him to open up proves to be very difficult.  Presley is trying to guard her heart from being broken, but it seems that when it comes to not having feelings, these two completely fail.

This was the perfect start to this series.  We get to meet all members of the Greene family.  And I can tell that this series is going fun and quite interesting.  Especially after the ending of this book.  Piper Rayne has once again delivered.  My Beautiful Neighbor is sweet, fun and witty, and  filled with characters that you will fall in love with.  You will feel like you are one of the family.  I cannot wait for Adam's story next.

Scarlett

Cristiano is my enemy. He’s also the only man with whom I’ve ever felt safe. Protected.

But I have to remember that he married me with one purpose in mind. Revenge. I would be the bridge to his real enemies.

I can’t let myself forget that he isn’t the hero of this story. His hands are covered in blood. I saw that with my own eyes.

Cristiano

I thought I knew Scarlett’s past, but I didn’t know anything.

I thought I knew the worst of monsters, but I hadn’t seen anything yet.

Sometimes you have to lie to yourself to survive.

Sometimes it’s those closest to you who will bury their knives in your back.

Too many times it’s the innocents who pay for your mistakes. For your refusal to see.

I can’t let Scarlett pay for mine.

But I may be too late to stop it.

Review by Jen Skewes

This is the follow up to Scarlett and Cristiano's story.  We were left with a major, draw dropping cliffhanger and I could not wait to see how this all ended.

Ms. Knight takes you on one heck of journey with many ups and downs and shocking twists.  This is going to be one of my shortest reviews because I truly do not want to die anything away in this book at all.

I Thee Take is raw, gritty and intense.  It will have you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. Just when you thought you knew what was going to happen, you are completely shocked to find out you were wrong.  There are twists and turns, betrayals and lies, enough angst that your heart is in your throat the entire time.  What a ride, Ms. Knight took us on.  Just wow!!  This duet is by far my favorite of hers.

Release Blitz: Make It Sweet by Kristen Callihan

Make It Sweet by Kristen Callihan is now live!

From New York Times bestselling author Kristen Callihan comes a charming, emotional romance about redefining dreams and discovering unlikely love along the way.

Life for Emma isn't good. The world knows her as Princess Anya on Dark Castle, but then her character gets the axe--literally. The cherry on top is finding her boyfriend in bed with another woman. She needs a break, and sanctuary comes in the form of Rosemont, a gorgeous estate in California promising rest and relaxation.

Then she meets the owner's equally gorgeous grandson, ex-hockey player and current recluse Lucian Osmond, and she sees her own pain and yearning reflected in his eyes.

He's charming when he wants to be but also secretive and gruff, with protective walls as thick as Emma's own. Despite a growing attraction, they avoid each other.

But then there's an impromptu nighttime skinny-dip, and Lucian's luscious homemade tarts and cream cakes start arriving at Emma's door, tempting her to taste life again...

In trying to stay apart, they only grow closer--and their broken pieces just might fit together and make them whole.

Review by Lisa Kane

Emma Maron is the star of a popular cable show, Dark Castle. It's so popular that even the cast has no idea of the longterm direction of the characters. They are strictly on a script by script basis. So imagine her horror at reading that her character, Anya has her head chopped off by her nemesis. Guess it's like Daenerys getting killed at the end. Only the show isn't ending, just Emma's part in it. Worse, she's sworn to secrecy about her character's demise so how is she going to let it be known she's open for more work?

My happy place was no more. My dream role was gone.

If she thinks she's had a bad day, it only gets worse when she comes home to lick her wounds and finds her boyfriend going at it with the waitress from the restaurant they dined at a few nights ago. I hope she didn't leave a big tip for her.

"You're early."

"Funny, I think I arrived just in time."

Emma just wants to get away, she's been filming in Iceland but doesn't want to return to LA where she lives with her cheating boyfriend. So she takes her grandmother's advice and decides to hide out at Amalie Osmond's estate, Rosemont in Montecito, California.

Lucien Osmond, better known as Ozzy has the world by the balls. He's the captain and the center for the Caps in Washington DC. Two time Stanley Cup champion, the golden boy of the team, a gorgeous fiance, Cassandra, he has it all.

Hockey defined me.

The point being hockey was my life. And life was damn good.

That is up until a head injury ends his career. If he plays again he risks permanent damage, lights our forever kind of damage. So he hangs up his skates and retreats to Rosemont to spend time with his grandmother, Mamie.

Somehow Lucien's grandmother gives in to playing driver and picking up Emma at the airport. She mistakes him first for a fan and then as a hired driver. Lucien doesn't want her to know who he is, He's bitter and resentful and just a plain old (even though he's young) grump. He spends his day concocting lavish desserts for his grandmother's estate. He always had a passion for baking, not like his passion for hockey-he lived to play hockey-but he's talented and he likes to see the expression on people's faces when they taste his creations.

After a rocky start, Lucien and Emma do their best to act disinterested around each other. Their chemistry is palpable, but neither one needs this complication. Life is messy enough at the moment without throwing in anymore drama. As if they can choose to sit by and just observe....

Make it Sweet has lots of funny moments, but it is also about adversity and loss. How do you reinvent yourself when the very thing you loved is taken away from you?

Make no mistake, Lucien can be a real ass. Especially when that hole in  his heart has been filled with love for a good woman, he just never seems to realize that maybe this is his new life. A life that can be even better then what he had before. (Shakes head at this guy!)

"I'm a hockey player!" My shout echoed in the space and bounced back at me. "It's all I ever was or wanted to be."

One of the best things in this story? The desserts. I'm not sure that I have ever eaten so many desserts while reading a book before. The names, the ingredients. All the details that make you smack your lips and crave that sugary goodness. Ah! I loved reading about them.

Both Lucien and Emma are lost, finding their new way and finding it together makes for a delicious read!

Home.

That was exactly where I was going.

BLURB

Finding a good roommate through a classified ad isn’t as easy as it sounds.
I was starting to lose hope.
Until a knock at my door came and God answered my prayers.
Except…uh…wrong prayer, God.
I’d definitely requested the big guy find me a drop-dead gorgeous man on more than one occasion...just not as my roommate.
Declan Tate talked me into interviewing him anyway.
While he was amusing and charismatic, I wouldn’t have been comfortable living with a man, so I regretfully declined.
Then cupcakes showed up at my door—freshly baked by Declan and just as sinfully delicious as he was.
You could say he was persistent.
I eventually folded. It wasn’t like I had another viable candidate anyway.
Plus, I was interested in someone else. And Declan was into another woman. So it wasn’t like anything would happen romantically.
After he moved in, the two of us became the best of friends. We even started to give each other advice on getting our crushes to notice us.
Eventually, Declan concocted an idea: we should pretend to be a couple to make our love interests jealous.
I was hesitant, but went along with it anyway. To my utter shock, his crazy plan worked.
Now I was dating the supposed man of my dreams, and my best friend had the woman of his.
But there was one problem.
I couldn’t stop thinking about Declan.
Those feelings we were trying to fake?
Yeah…I wasn’t pretending anymore.

Book Blurb:

I always knew I was different.

From a young age, my mind has been plagued with things only I could see. Some hauntingly beautiful, others completely terrifying. Never knowing if these visions were real or just hallucinations, I learned how to lock them down and ignore them. I learned to take solace in the relative anonymity of city life and find peace in the rainy days my city of Seattle is known for.

But just when I think my life is getting on track and my dreams are achievable, a moment of weakness causes me to learn a hard and fast lesson.

My entire existence has been a lie.

Now I’m faced with a new reality that’s as implausible as it is fantastical. Filled with realms and veils, light and dark, fae and daemons, gods and angels—things I don’t understand but am forced to acknowledge. It doesn’t help that the man teaching me about my unique gifts is the gorgeously handsome Carrick Byrne, one of Seattle’s richest and most powerful men. He intimidates, annoys, and intrigues me all at the same time. I don’t trust him and yet there’s no one else to help me.

No longer certain who to put my faith in, what to believe, or how I fit into it all, one revelation is clear…

The world as I know it will never be the same again.

The Revelation of Light and Dark is book one of the Chronicles of the Stone Veil series and is best enjoyed if read in series order.

Review by Trinette Dungee

Finely Porter has spent most of her life thinking she was crazy. Literally. She would look at people and sometimes see, not a person but other creatures. Her family chalked it up to a vivid childhood imagination, or imaginary friends. As she got older and the behavior continued, her father, having suffered through mental illness of his own, had her committed to a psychiatric facility at the age of ten. As years passed, Finley learned to control what she saw in some people. To placate her family, (her father and twin sister Fallon), she took the drugs prescribed for her and never again mentioned what she saw. Until the day Carrick Bryne walked into her life. Carrick is one of Seattle’s most handsome and richest men and upon sight he dislikes her. It is Carrick who introduces Finley to a world of mystical immortal beings that proves that she was not crazy after all. To the average person, these beings look like normal people, but Finley can see beyond their cover. Despite his dislike for Finley, Carrick is also mystified by her since she’s the only human who can see  beyond the human façade and see the creatures for who they truly are, so he must now work with her to understand how this is possible and why.

Finley is introduced to a world full of Dark Fae, Light Fae, and Daemons. Some are good, some are bad, and now word is getting out that she is the only human who can see them, and her life could possibly be in danger. While Carrick is curious about Finley, Finley is curious about him. Carrick says he human, yet he too is able to see beyond masks these creatures wear. If she’s the only human who can do this, how can he? What is he?

I’m not a fan of paranormal or supernatural storylines, and I’m also not a fan of cliffhangers, but that’s exactly what Sawyer Bennett has given us; a paranormal/supernatural storyline with several cliffhangers. And because I have yet to meet a Sawyer Bennett book that I didn’t like, I had to give it a try.  I have to say, I honest and truly thought I was going to come out of this book giving it three stars because it’s just not a genre I’m a fan of and I was going to struggle through it. I’m pretty much a punk when it comes to paranormal so I’d convinced myself that I would probably have to read during the day. I was wrong on every level!!

I will admit, the first few chapters did have me feeling like I was going to need to sleep with the light on for a few months, but that feeling quickly passed the more I got into the story. For her first time with this genre, Sawyer knocked it out of the park. The storyline was good, the characters were great, and the connection was immediate. The pace and the flow were perfect. I was thoroughly impressed with this read. The only thing stopping this from being a five star read is, some of the backstory or description of the types of Faes and Daemons was confusing and I had to reread those sections to get a better understanding and I’m not quite sure I truly get it; but I understand why it’s needed. There are five books in this series, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the other four. Luckily the releases aren’t that far apart (I think that’s the only reason I’m okay with it being a cliffhanger, LOL).

There’s actually a prequel book (making the series six books), that I read after book one. You can read it prior, but the storyline actually made more sense to me reading it after book 1.
