Release Blitz for Sawyer Bennett's Cannon (Pittsburgh Titans #6)

Cannon: A Pittsburgh Titans Novel
Sawyer Bennett
Release Date: February 28, 2023

Synopsis:

Cannon West left his hockey playing days behind to care for his dying wife but has since found success on the other side of the bench. Now, as the youngest head coach in league history, he’s hoping to lead the Pittsburgh Titans to a winning season. The last thing he’s looking for is a relationship, but life sometimes takes us in another direction.

The Pittsburgh Titans are still working to move on from the tragic plane crash that forever changed the landscape of their organization. Having lost my wife, I know all about grief and the guilt of survival which makes me uniquely equipped to take this team to the next level. From the very first time I stepped inside the Titans’ arena, I knew I was exactly where I needed to be.

New to town, I’m still establishing my routine, but I have the most important aspect under control—the coffee shop where I stop on my way to the arena every morning. A strong cup of java and the gorgeous manager who I can’t help but chat up is quickly becoming my favorite way to start the day. But no matter how much I enjoy the blush that stains Ava Cavanaugh’s cheeks with my admittedly awkward attempt at flirting, I know it will never be more than brazen banter with a new friend. My job consumes almost all my time, and I know firsthand what that level of commitment can do to a relationship.

That doesn’t mean I’m not open to some fun. My career comes first, but Ava understands my boundaries. The only problem is that once I give into her temptation, the rules I set for myself become blurred, and my mixed signals hurt Ava—the one thing I promised I wouldn’t do. I’ve put myself in what seems to be an untenable situation, but I’ve faced those before. Now I need to find the strength to move past my fears, or risk losing my second chance at love with the woman who has stolen my heart.

Trinette Dungee's 4 Star Review

What I knew about Cannon West going into this book:

  • He’s the newly appointed head coach of the Pittsburgh Titans
  • He’s the youngest coach in the league
  • He’s a widower
  • He gave up his career to care for his dying wife

What I thought I was going to get with Cannon West:

  • A loner,
  • A broken man trying to find his way back after the loss of his wife
  • A little bit broody

What I now know about Cannon West:

  • He’s adjusted
  • He’s an Alpha
  • He is nothing like I expected him to be
  • He’s a DIRTY TALKER!

On top of being the youngest head coach in the league, he’s head coach of a team that’s rebuilding themselves after a horrific loss, and he’s known as the player who gave up his career to care for his dying wife at the top of his game, so all eyes are on Cannon West. With all of this, there’s no room in his current world for long term relationships, but he can most certainly make room for Ms. Ava Cavanaugh, the sexy manager/barista at his neighborhood coffee shop.

Cannon West was nothing I expected him to be! Throughout the last few Titan books, he’s been mentioned quite often, and the main thing associated with him was the fact that he was a widower and how he cared for his dying wife. Naturally, I assumed the ghost of his wife would be ever present during this story and she’d inadvertently become a third main character.

I was curious to read his story, but if I’m being honest, he wasn’t at the top of my list to be devoured. I don’t think I’ve ever misjudged a character this badly before. From the minute he’s introduced I know I might be slightly off about my assessment. When he interacts with Ava, oh, I KNOW I’m off; and as time goes on, I know I’m WAY OFF.

Cannon is far from the grieving widower I thought he was going to be, and it was a refreshing change from what the typical storylines give us for widowers. In these instances, it’s a withdrawn, sullen, heartbroken man; or men who are screwing anything walking to drown to drown out the grief. Cannon was neither of these, kudos to Sawyer for switching things up. Cannon married his high school sweetheart, and it’s been ten years since her death.

During this time, he’s remained active in hockey and has moved on with his life. The only thing that hangs over him is how he always made hockey his number one priority, and not his relationship. With everything he has going on, he can promise exclusivity for the time he’s with anyone, but he cannot and will not promise forever. When Ava explains that she may or may not stay in Pittsburgh, this is the perfect set up for him.

The chemistry between Cannon and Ava jumps off the page from the minute Cannon hits her with what he thinks is awkward flirting, which is anything but awkward. And then he totally shocks me he shoots for the stars and declares they will be going out:

“What’s your last name?” That startles her, and she cuts me a side eye before answering, “Cavanaugh,” I pull out my phone, navigate to Contacts, and start a new one. “Ava Cavanaugh, And your phone number?” Those eyes lift to meet mind, her head tipped slightly. “Really?”  “Yes, really. We’re going out for a drink.” She just stares at me. I stare right back, refusing to blink. “Phone number. Now.”

Those are not the words or the attitude of a man who’s broken or unsure of himself.

I loved the chemistry between these two. They get each other. When they are together in any capacity they just clicked. Their conversations flowed, their banter is easy, their comfort level is so relaxed. Their relationship is so comfortable that they both very easily fall into a routine and the very commitment neither thought they wanted or needed.

Their companionable chemistry was one thing, but the sexual chemistry between these two was off the charts. They didn’t just set the room on fire, they set the whole damned building on fire!

“Leaning down, he doesn’t kiss my mouth but rather feathers his lips just below my ear. Are you ready to get fuc*ed?”.….” I’m a dirty talker. Is that problem?”

And that was just the tip of the iceberg with his dirty talk! With the words he used, he gave Ava a full sexual experience without even touching her at times. Hell, with his dirty talk and the actions that matched, the sex they had, had me feeling like I was on an amusement park ride!

What I always love and appreciate about the way Sawyer writes her heroes, is they aren’t afraid to show emotion. Cannon is no different. While most of his is shown through what he does for Ava and how he tries to help her it was obvious when his feelings for her started to venture to where he didn’t want them to go.

Cannon also possessed huge compassion; this was most obvious in his relationship with his former mother-in-law. The person battling the ghost in this book wasn’t Cannon, but his wife’s mother. The level of patience shown by this man was amazing when dealing with her.

His compassion is also what makes him a good coach.

“Your numbers aren’t what they were last year, and Bain is performing better. I think you have the ability to battle for that position if you want it, but I need to know if there’s anything I can do to help you get your focus back.” Camden’s gaze slides, and I use that opportunity to push a little harder. “Is it the crash? You need any help with that?” Camden shakes his head, eyes snapping back to mine. “It’s not that. Just some family stuff I have going on. It’s fair to say my focus has taken a hit.”

During this book Cannon is often looking at ways to help Camden out with his game. Camden is one of the lucky three that wasn’t on the plane that took the lives of the former Titan team, and this is setting us up for the next Titan player’s story.

Cannon is a quick read with low angst, high heat, and sweet moments.

I always love the little nuggets dropped in one series that links back to another series. This nugget shows up when Ava gives Cannon a little of her background.

“I was an HR generalist for a large life insurance company back in my hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina.” “Oh God,” Cannon moans with exaggeration. “Please don’t tell me you’re a Cold Fury fan.”

Release Blitz for Penelope Ward's Toe the Line

Title: Toe the Line
Author: Penelope Ward
Genre: Standalone Contemporary Romance
Trope: Friends-to-Lovers
Release Date: February 27, 2023

BLURB

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward comes a friends-to-lovers story spanning more than a decade…

At first, I thought I’d hate spending the summer with Archie Remington—the conceited son of my parents’ friends.
What I knew about Archie: he was gorgeous, pre-law, and had always treated me like I didn’t exist when we were younger.
When our families bought a house together on an island in Maine, he and I were forced to share a bathroom.
The boy I remembered was now a full-grown man—but with the same attitude.
After a rough start, Archie and I unexpectedly started getting along one day and eventually became friends. We shared secrets and bonded during our morning jogs. I discovered that Archie had a wild spirit and that he struggled to conform to his father’s expectations.
Things were cool until I had to go and ruin it, getting drunk one night, and blurting out my fantasy—involving him.
I took it back, but it was too late. Archie had heard me loud and clear. After that, we never quite knew how to toe the line.
When that summer came to an abrupt and shocking end, I headed back to college, unsure if anything would ever be the same again.
Across the miles over the years, he and I stayed in touch as friends, but fate and timing always kept us from becoming more.
You know the saying: If two people are meant to be, they’ll find their way back to each other?
Let’s just say Archie came back into my life in a way I would’ve never expected.
And this time, my heart would really be put to the test.

Lisa Kane's 4 Star Review

Noelle Benedict and Archie Remington have been best friends for years. When they first really got to know each other, they were both staying at the home their parents had just purchased together in Maine. Archie didn't have much time for Noelle and as much as she secretly crushed on him, she wasn't crazy about his personality. But circumstances allowed them to get to know each other and to become close. And for a time one summer, they crossed that line and became more than friends.

But things came to an abrupt end and they went back to the friend zone. Years passed, relationships came and went, some serious some not and then came the widening of the gap between them that forever changed their lives. I don't want to post any spoilers but suffice it to say that Noelle was forced to move on and to find someone she might be able to call her forever love.

Archie and Noelle have the worst timing, they just never seem to be able to get on the same page at the same time. But at a strange point in their relationship, Noelle has a proposal for Archie. One he surprisingly takes her up on and things are going to change again. For the first time in a long time, they are both in the same place ready to take a chance on each other. Archie may have wanted Noelle for most of his adult life, but his fears that he isn't what she needs always seems to get in the way. Is he going to sabotage things again?

Toe the Line has lots of heat and great dialogue. The thing that held me back from loving it is the angst. So much angst, so many missed opportunities. Sometimes all that drama can exhaust you and you just want a sweet romance with a few bumps. As much as I enjoyed this story, I wish there had been less pain and more fun.

Title: Three Strikes And You're Mine

Author: R.S. Grey

Genre: Contemporary Romance

About Three Strikes And You're Mine:

Dear Past Me,   Future You here, coming to offer a little advice: hang on for dear life. This summer is going to be a wild one. I know what you’re thinking: Life’s going so well! I don’t have a care in the world! Wrong. That culinary career you love so much? It’s about to go up in smoke, and your boyfriend? Yeah…he’s a goner too. If only love were as simple as, say, actually adding yourself to the lease agreement so you don’t suddenly find yourself loveless, jobless, and homeless!   Did your five-year plan include moving back in with your family and sharing a bed with your Nonna? No? Well, hate to break it to you…it’s exactly as traumatizing as it sounds.   Have you had enough? Too bad. Buckle up—it gets worse. Your new boss is a professional baseball player, and he’s hot, like really hot, but you’ll pretend not to notice because he’s a single dad and it feels wrong to ogle him in front of his innocent child. Unfortunately, he thinks you’re sexy as hell too. Unrequited love is one thing; mutual off-limits pining destined to explode in the worst of ways? What could go wrong…wrongwrong… (That’s me fading out because you have to take it from here, kid. Good luck! Don’t screw this up for me.)   Sincerely, Your future (wiser) self

Lisa Kane's 4.5 Star Review

RS Grey is one of my favorite authors. I most enjoy her rom/com's and Three Strikes might just be one of her best.

Luke Allen has just retired from being the pitcher for the New York Pinstripes. As much as he loves the game, he's a single dad with a precocious, adorable little girl named Harper. He feels she needs to come first and after filling her life with nannies, it's about time he made his life about her. Her mom, a good friend of Luke's died when Harper was two. They never married, but he valued her friendship and misses her in his life.

Chloe Ricci is a pastry chef at the Fig & Olive restaurant, owned by her boyfriend and renowned chef, Miles Wilson and a good one at that.  Her boyfriend is a bit aloof (come on, he's a real douche canoe) but Chloe is a little bit of a push over and she's not one to make demands. After both have finished working a long shift, he tells her he has some things to finish up. Mind you, it's late at night, it's New York and he can't be bothered to make sure she gets to home okay. But she forgets her keys, comes back to the kitchen and sees him "cooking up" a little mischief with Chloe's good friend. Talk about stirring the pot. So Chloe leaves her job, and the apartment she shared with Miles and is out in the cold.

Chloe's big Italian family are more than happy to have her move back home, but she'd have to share a room with her Nonna. She's going to pass and find a job where she can support herself. A relative comes through and she finds herself working as a caretaker for an estate in Bridgehampton. Her first night there, the owner, Luke Allen surprises her from a dead sleep. Turns out his plans to go to Colorado are derailed and he's spending the summer here. No need for a caretaker.

Chloe convinces Luke she can do what she does best-cook up delicious meals for Luke and Harper and do odd things around the house. These two have chemistry but Chloe just got out of a messy relationship with her boss and she isn't going to lose another job because she thinks her boss is hot. Let's see how avoiding getting involved with Luke is going to work out.

Luke and Chloe are funny and caring and genuinely good people. Their dialogue is funny as are their inner thoughts, both intent on keeping things strictly business. Um hmmm...

Three Strikes story flies by and was over before I knew it. My only wish is that it had just a little bit more angst. I do love a bumpy ride and love to earn my happy ending.

Synopsis

Please leave your message at the sound of the beep…

Tatiana, it’s currently four o’clock in the morning, and I can’t sleep because I’m drunk and wide-awake thinking about you.

How I was almost yours, and you were almost mine…

My life is currently in shambles, and my entire fighting career is hanging in the balance. So, I have to make some huge changes.

Since you still owe me that favor from years ago, I need to cash it in now.

I need you to pretend to be my fiancé for ninety days.

Just ninety days.

We don’t have to talk behind closed doors and we don’t have to try to be friends again. We don’t even have to kiss—even though I can guarantee no man has ever kissed you better…

I can promise that we won’t touch either. Although the last time we ran into each other, you looked like you wanted me all over again. (Don’t deny it.)

Anyway, I’m just cashing in that delayed “I.O.U.” that you swore would “never be too late to redeem.”

I’m not asking for much. I just want you to pretend it’s real, for me.
