Reagan

My husband and I know how to fight. We perfected the art when running against each other for Congress. But that fighting revealed a passion for each other that we couldn’t deny. Battle lines were erased as enemies became lovers. But now we’re in the fight of our lives – we’re battling a smear campaign as he runs for governor. And again, we find ourselves drawn to do what we do best. I won’t be controlled, even by the man who owns my heart. But as tensions escalate to a boiling point, I discover there is one place I like checking my defiance – the bedroom. As Jude takes his dominance over me to a new level, I discover that submission can bring me to places I’ve ever known.

A Standalone Second Chance Romance Novel
By: #1 NY Times Best Selling Author, Vi Keeland
RELEASE DATE: Monday, July 23, 2018
Synopsis:

It was just a typical Monday.

Until the big boss asked me to make the pitch for a prospective new client.

After two years on shaky ground at work because of my screw up, an opportunity to impress the senior partners was just what I needed.

Or so I thought…

Until I walked into the conference room and collided with the man I was supposed to pitch.

My coffee spilled, my files tumbled to the ground, and I almost lost my balance.

And that was the good part of my day.

Because the gorgeous man crouched down and looking at me like he wanted to eat me alive, was none other than my ex, Gray Westbrook.

A man who I’d only just begun to move on from.

A man who my heart despised—yet my body obviously still had other ideas about.

A man who was as charismatic and confident as he was sexy.

Somehow, I managed to make it through my presentation ignoring his intense stare.

Although it was impossible to ignore all the dirty things he whispered into my ear right after I was done.

But there was no way I was giving him another chance, especially now that he was a client…was there?

The Surviving Trace by Calia Read

Happy Release Day to Calia Read and her new time travel/romance—THE SURVIVING TRACE! This is one you don't want to miss!!

Will is my fiancé. The shy man I met years ago in college. The person I’m supposed to spend the rest of my life with.
This is the life I’ve always wanted until finding a picture of four men changes everything…
Etienne says he’s my husband and the year is 1912. He can’t stand the sight of me, but I don’t know why.
Oh, and he’s one of the men from the picture.
I’ve done the impossible and have become trapped in time and I know Etienne is my key to going home.
The more time I spend with Etienne, the further I fall for him, until I’m questioning which time I belong in and if the life I left behind is the one I truly desire.
All I know for certain is I need to survive time.
I need to survive love.
And I need to make it out on the other side alive.

Right then, someone places a hand on my arm. I turn and see Nat. Her eyes are wide with panic. “Étienne is here.” I stare at her blankly, and she frowns. “Did you hear me? I said Étienne’s here. He’s livid.”

Judging by Nat’s frantic expression and tone of voice, I know this Étienne is someone important. But I don’t know who the hell he is or why I should be the slightest bit nervous.

I’m getting ready to say that when she plants her hands on my shoulders. It’s impossible to tell if the gesture is more for her benefit or mine. “You’re in no shape to see him. I’ll distract him. That should afford you some time to hurry to your room.”

Before I can reply or ask who in the hell this Étienne is, the whispers start. Word spreads like wildfire until conversations practically cease.

“Go,” Nat pleads.

No sooner has the word escaped her mouth before the doors at the far end of the room slam open. People stop what they’re doing. Even the musicians appear unsure and stare at each other in confusion.

Nat and Livingston move in front of me like a pair of bodyguards. I stand on my tiptoes and try to peer between their shoulders, but all I can make out is a stark white shirt. I’m confident it’s the Étienne man Nat was talking about.

In the hushed silence, I can distinctly hear his powerful steps. People inch toward the walls or the double doors.

“What are you still doin’ here? Go!” Nat whispers to me.

Why would I go? It’s just getting interesting. A thrill courses down my spine and spreads throughout my body. Minutes ago, I wanted to leave, but the dramatic reaction elicited from everyone and the giant question mark stamped over this mysterious Étienne makes me stay put.

Plus, this is a dream. Right now, I’m merely a cat with nine lives. If danger comes my way, I’ll survive. By the ninth, I’ll wake up.

For now, I’m safe.

The closer he gets, the louder his footsteps become. My heart pounds in sync with his footsteps. When he stops walking, Nat and Livingston’s shoulders are practically fused together. All I can see is the man crossing his tan arms.

There’s a beat of silence before Nat speaks. “Étienne. This is a pleasant surprise. I didn’t know you’d be here.”

“I live here. This is my home.” His voice is laced with the same slow, Southern drawl as everyone else I’ve heard speak tonight. But I think it’s the deep timbre that makes my pulse jump. Yes, that has to be it. “Who’s behind you?”

“No one,” Livingston and Nat say in unison.

“Are you sure? Because I swear I see the top of Serene’s head behind your shoulder.”

He knows my name. How does he know my name? Once again, I remind myself that anything goes in dreams. But something about this isn’t sitting well in my gut.

Livingston and Nat turn at the same time. They wear expressions of pure shock, as if they had no idea I’d been standing behind them.

“Oh, it’s Serene.” Livingston shares a well-practiced look of confusion with Nathalie. “I didn’t know she was there. Did you, Nat?”

“I did not.”

Damn, these two are good. If this were real life, we’d be fast friends. From how they play off of each other’s body language and words, I know they’re siblings; my brothers and I covered for each other the same way.

I can’t see the man’s expression, but I’m willing to bet he’s not buying anything they’re saying.

“Step aside. I need to talk to her.”

No one makes a sound. My legs shake.

When Livingston and Nat don’t budge, he says, “Move. Now.”

Nat’s shoulders slightly sag in defeat. I’m half-tempted to tell her not to give in to his demands, but my tongue becomes three sizes too big for my mouth.

As she steps to the right, she gives me a quick once-over and whispers, “I tried to warn you.”

They move away, and it feels as if I’ve been thrown to the wolves. Now I’m facing the leader of the pack. The first thing that comes to my mind once I see him is, Shit. I should’ve listened to Nathalie.

Because this isn’t the good ol’ boy every mother wants their daughter to end up with. No. This is the man every mom has warned their daughters about. You run, not walk when you encounter someone like him.

I stand there as though I’m nailed to the floor and watch as the man gazes around the room. He sighs as if everyone is wasting his precious time.

Then he turns his eyes to me, and when he does, the realization hits me like a bolt of lightning.

It’s my mystery man.

The man from my dream.

The man from the picture.

Standing inches away from me.

The Controversial Princess by Jodi Ellen Malpas
Publication Date: May 22nd, 2018
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Her father is The King of England.
She is The Controversial Princess.
Regarded as down to earth by the press and rebellious by The King, Princess Adeline refuses to bow to the royal expectations her title carries. She knows better than anyone that the united front of the royal family is nothing but smoke and mirrors – lies and secrets masked by power and privilege. She wants no part of it, and she will never surrender to The King’s demand to marry a man she does not love. But despite Adeline’s determination to retain her free will, she remains deeply unfulfilled, feeling caged and suffocated.
That is until she meets Josh Jameson. Drawn in by his confidence, Adeline is soon captivated by the scandalously sexy American actor. His ability to penetrate her defences overwhelms her – his touch is pure fire, and his allure overpowering. Nothing has ever made her feel so alive in a world where she’s otherwise slowly drowning. However, while Josh may be Hollywood royalty, he’s not actual royalty, and Adeline knows The King and his advisors will do everything in their power to keep them apart.
But Josh Jameson becomes the princess’s ultimate vice.
And although she bows to no one, she bows to him.

Review by Lisa Kane

Princess Adeline Lockhart is willful, impulsive and bored stiff. Daughter of the King of England, she is more for decoration than a royal with a purpose.

“Well.” I laugh, as if he needs to ask. “My eldest brother is the Heir Apparent. My other brother, Eddie, is a backup heir to the Heir Apparent. I am a backup for the backup, but neither Eddie nor I will be required. “

Since there is virtually no chance of Adeline becoming Queen, she is free to run rampant. Her father, the King, may try to rein her in, but Adeline will sleep with who she wants, party as much as she wants and snub her nose at all things that she wants.

On the night of her 30th birthday, she is subjected once again to her father and his blatant desire to see her wed to Haydon Sampson, a perfectly nice guy who is perfectly boring. But there is also a surprise guest. The Hollywood actor, Josh Jameson, a friend of her brother’s is there. Adeline is intrigued. He makes her girly parts tingle. Josh is not the least bit intimidated by this Royal, quite the contrary.

“Rumor has it that Adeline Lockhart is the unruliest royal that’s ever lived,” Josh says.

Josh is dominating and bold and makes no secret he wants Adeline. She could lose herself in him. She knows when she might have met her match and her head tells her something that her body may not want to hear.

But while Josh Jameson is Hollywood royalty and most women on earth would jump him at the first flash of his disarming smile, I am actual royalty.

But for how long can she hold out against Josh? Does she really want to?

Josh Jameson strips me of my trusty sass with one smoldering look.

The Controversial Princess goes well beneath the surface of other royal romance stories. There are secrets and intrigue. Be forewarned, this is a cliffy and how this one ends-well, I never saw that one coming!

The one thing I can’t be without.

My American Boy.

Excerpt:
Leaning over, he kisses the tip of my nose. “Now, food’s on the way. We’ll have a carpet picnic, what do ya say?”

“I’ve never had a carpet picnic before.”

“Say what?” He looks horrified. “Never?”

My shoulders jump up on a little shrug. “It’s all fine dining, posh china, and solid silver cutlery at a table that’s so shiny you can see your face in it.”

“Then tonight we fix that.” He pulls me up and walks us through to the lounge. “Get all the cushions on the floor.” He pulls a throw off the back of a chair and wafts it into the air while I pull all the cushions from the couch. I watch as Josh gets on his hands and knees and starts pulling at the corners of the blanket, straightening it out and placing cushions.

I have a permanent smile on my face, fascinated by his deep concentration. “You are doing a tremendously good job,” I say, clearing my face of my smile when his motions falter and he looks up at me. One of his eyes narrows, and in a lightning move, he snatches my wrist and yanks me down to the floor. I cry in surprise, being rolled to my back until I’m once again pinned against something by his body. Not that I’m complaining. Would never dream of it. I blow a tickling hair from my nose and grin at him.

“You’re making fun of me.” He dips and bites the end of my nose.

“Not at all.” I chuckle, squirming beneath him while he makes a meal of my face.

“Too good for a carpet picnic, are you? You want a throne?”

“Definitely not,” I blurt. “Unless your face will be my throne.”

Josh pulls back speedily on a little choke, his eyes bulging. I press my lips together as he stares at me in shock, like how could such a vulgar thing have fallen from the lips of a princess? “I think I just fell in love with you.”

It’s my turn to choke. “Blimey, you fall easily, don’t you?”

“Actually, I don’t fall at all.”

“No?”

He shakes his head. “Baby, I’ll be your throne any day of the week.”

“Honored.”

“It is me who’s honored. It’s not every day a real-life princess tells you she wants to sit on your face.”

Laughter erupts from deep within me, my eyes clenching shut, my head thrown back. My position and lack of control gives Josh the perfect opportunity to ravish my throat. And he does, growling dramatically, squirming above me...rubbing me.

4 Stars
Review by Lisa Kane

Heathcliff “Rush” Rushmore is nuts about Gia. In the time that she’s worked at The Heights she’s turned his world upside down. Poor Rush. If he thinks his life is crazy right now, just wait.

Gia is struggling to deal with the fact that life is throwing her all kinds of curve balls. Her rock, Rush-well how can she tell him what she’s just discovered? He will be so hurt and betrayed. But how can she not tell him?

Every time I would look into Rush’s trusting eyes, a piece of me would slowly die from the guilt.

There are a couple of major plotlines going on. Things that could spoil this whole duet. So this is one of those reviews that is all over the place, trying not to indulge any secrets.

When it all goes kaboom, and I knew it would, I had no problem feeling the pain that drowned both Rush and Gia. Rush is so tortured and Gia is so determined to handle things on her own.

I still loved her so much. That never changed for one second. I just didn’t’ know how to handle what I was feeling, couldn’t articulate my pain.

Can you tell me you want to be with me? That you can accept the hand we’ve been dealt and move on?”

Rush has abandonment issues, his illegitimacy and the piece of crap sperm donor who has made his life hell are just throwing gasoline into this bonfire. Not to mention the sheer loathing he has for his philandering brother Elliott-that guy is truly pond scum.

In order to move on, you have to stop looking back.

Rebel Heart is a full of messy drama and angst. There are truly some despicable characters in this story-namely Edward, Rush’s father and Elliot his brother. I can only hope that their devious business deals land them in jail. Their hearts are black and there have been too many disgusting actions to ever warrant any kind of redemption for either one of them. It’s hard to imagine Rush sharing any of that polluted DNA.

“There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for you, sweetheart.”

Snag a gorgeous rental on the beach. Check.

Get a job at a trendy summer haunt. Check.

How to screw up a great summer in the Hamptons:

Fall for the one guy with a dark leather jacket, scruff on his face, and intense eyes that doesn’t fit in with the rest of the tony looking crowd. A guy you can’t have when you’ll be leaving at the end of the season.

Check. Check. Check.

I should add—especially when the guy is your sexy, tattooed God of a boss.

Especially when he not only owns your place of employment but inherited half of the town.

Especially when he’s mean to you.

Or so I thought.

Until one night when he demanded I get in his car so he could drive me home because he didn’t want me walking in the dark.

That was sort of how it all started with Rush.

And then little by little, some of the walls of this hardass man started to come down.

I never expected that the two of us, seemingly opposites from the outside, would grow so close.

I wasn't supposed to fall for the rebel heir, especially when he made it clear he didn’t want to cross the line with me.

As the temperature turned cooler, the nights became hotter. My summer became a lot more interesting—and complicated.

All good things must come to an end, right?

Except our ending was one I didn’t see coming.

Blog Tour: Worth the Risk by K. Bromberg

WorthTheRiskSBPRBTBanner

Synopsis

This whole contest was supposed to be easy. I know, I know. Famous last words.

It’s a long story, but I messed up at work. Big time. To earn back the trust of my boss, I promised to save one of our magazines. Yep. That Hot Dad contest you’ve seen advertised all over the place was my idea. And if I’m successful, if I’m able to increase our online readership, then I get a shot at my dream job.

But the one thing I never expected to happen, happened: Contestant number ten, Grayson Malone. Hello, Mr. Difficult. And did I mention sexy as hell?

Unfortunately he knows me. The old me, anyway. And while we might be older now, I remind him of before. Of the woman who broke his heart, who hardened him, and who left him alone to raise the cutest little boy I’ve ever seen.

But I don’t want a relationship. And I definitely don’t fall for single dads with baggage. Even ones with chiseled abs and killer smiles.

But he got to me. They got to me. Him and his son and their messy, crazy life. But I got to him too. I see the stolen glances. I feel the walls he built start to crumble. I recognize that there’s an unexpected beauty to the chaos in his life.

And now that the contest is about to end, we’re left to decide whether the last six months were just fun or if what we have is worth risking it all?

4.5 Stars
Review by Jen Skewes

KBROMBERG_worth_riskebookWorth the Risk is Grayson Malone's story which I could not wait for.  It is the third in the series but can be read as a standalone.  But because the Malone men are so irresistible I definitely recommend reading the first two.  Ms. Bromberg did not not disappoint.   She knew how to toy with my emotions, pull at my heart strings and make me feel everything.

Sidney may have grown up in a small town but she was too big for that town.  She was one of those girls who had money, treated others as if they were beneath her and plans of leaving right after graduation.  And she did.  She’s been working for her father at one of his magazines and hopes that one day to secure her dream job.  But she has managed to screw up for the very last time.  He has a new assignment for her.  He’s sending her back home to help revive one of his his magazines.  The catch?  The magazine that needs help is a family magazine aimed towards moms, families and kids.  Something she knows nothing about and has no interest in. But this could lead to her dream job and she wants to make daddy proud.

Grayson Malone is a single father who seems bitter at the world or maybe just towards woman.  When Sidney Thorton appears on his door step he wants nothing to do with her or her stupid magazine contest. She wasn’t the nicest person to him in high school.  But Sidney is not giving up.  She will get Grayson on board with, save the magazine and go back to her normal life.  Yeah but it may not be that simple.  Grayson Malone is a challenge and one that she can’t stop thinking about.  The attraction is there on both sides.  But for Grayson she reminds him so much of his past that he can't seem to move on from.  But there’s no denying that he feels something towards her, even if he hates to admit it.  He has walls up and trust is a major issue for him.  But maybe People change.  Maybe she changed, because he sure has.  Grayson needs to decide if being with Sidney is worth the risk!!

This book had my emotions all over the place.  I absolutely loved Grayson and my heart broke for him and his son. But at the same time he could frustrate me like no other, to the point I wanted to slap some sense into him. He wasn’t always nice but his emotions were also all over and understandably so.  I felt for him and all he has gone through.  The pain he endured nine years ago. But that pain has caused him to be a bitter man, making it so hard to let go and let others in.  But beneath that is a single father who loves his son.  Luke is his world and he would do anything to protect him.  He is kind and sweet and loves helping others.  And not to mention how very sexy he is and his ability to talk dirty.  My Goodness!!!  He is the complete package.

Sidney is one of those heroines who I was so certain I would not like or connect to in the beginning. But I couldn’t have been more wrong. I loved her and her determination.  I loved watching her transform from that rich daddy’s girl to someone who cared about more than just herself.  She was so much more to her that I think even she may not have seen it at first.  But coming back home, meeting Grayson and his son changed something in her and I loved it and I loved her!

Worth the Risk was fantastic.  It was emotional, sexy and also fun.  The banter  between Grayson and his brothers had me smiling. But I also loved the other side of their relationship.  The one where they were there for each other and Grayson leaned on them for advice, even if at times it was unsolicited.  Ms. Bromberg once again proved why she is an amazing writer who can make you feel everything.  Because I did. I felt their pain, their heartache, their anger and frustration.  But I also felt the love and the chemistry between them.  I was so wrapped up in their world that I never wanted it to end.  I devoured this book from the moment I started reading.  Another amazing job.

But by the time I reach her, my blood boils with irrationality spurred on by too much alcohol.“Can I have a moment?” I ask as I walk up to her and grab her elbow, pushing her down the darkened hallway.

“What is your problem?” She hisses as she fights me every step of the way.

We get looks. I get looks. I don’t care because all I keep seeing is Vince’s hands on her arm. His eyes on her tits. His bullshit game I can spot a mile away.

I find the closest door down the hallway leading to the bathrooms, and it opens. I push her through it, barely noticing that it’s an office of sorts before the door is shut, her back is up against it, and my mouth is covering hers.

Take.

Goddammit. That’s my only thought as I fit my lips to hers and take out my anger on her mouth with tongue and teeth and every fucking lick and nip in between.

“What—”

“I’m so pissed at you.”

It’s all I say. It’s the only chance I give her to come up for air before my lips are back on hers. Before my tongue wars with hers. Before my body admits it would beg, borrow, and steal in order to taste every other part of her.

Groan.

I swallow the tiny sound she makes in our kiss as my hands hold her neck still and my lips wage an all-out assault. She hesitates—just a split second—before she reacts. Before her body bows into me, and her mouth argues back.

Fist.

Her hand in my shirt. Her other hand at the back of my neck as our bodies meet—pressed knee to chest. Her perfume in my nose. Her hair tickling my cheeks. The feel of her tits against my chest.

Give.

I can’t get enough.

I’m mad at her.

I want her.

I don’t want to want her.

Christ, do I want her.

“Gray.” A murmured protest.

I tear my lips from hers, shove off the door I have her pressed against, and stride to the other side of the room.

“You are . . . you just . . .” It’s as if I can barely breathe. Christ, I’m mad at you.”

She stands there, lips parted, chest heaving, and golden brown curls messed from my hands, but her eyes look hurt. A hurt I don’t want to see but can’t deny.

“Why?”

“You did this,” I accuse as I try to manage the anger that’s waging a war against my desire.

“Did what?” Her eyes narrow. Her hand goes to press against her chest.

“Made me want you.”

Grayson: I’ve been thinking about you all day.

I look down at the text and smile before turning my attention back to Rissa and our plans for how we’re going to end this round of voting and move on to the top five.

“So, I think we close it out and then maybe take the next week and announce one of the finalists each day. Give little tidbits about each of them, make readers like them more, just have fun with it.”

My phone beeps again with another text, and I bite back the new grin trying to form on my lips. Rissa only huffs, eyeing my phone with annoyance. “Sorry, let me turn my ringer off.”

And then I have to feign nonchalance when I look down at my phone and find another text.

Grayson: My dick is rock hard, and it’s you I’m imagining. It’s in my hand when I’d rather it be in your mouth with my fingers in your pussy, working you into a frenzy.

“Is everything okay?” Rissa asks, making me realize I must have made a noise when I read the text. “You look startled.”

I glance back at the text again and shake my head while every part of my body comes to life. “Yeah, it’s, uh, fine.”

“Your ringer.” Her brows are lifted as she glances to my phone and then back to me.

My finger?” I squeak, thinking she saw the phone screen.

“Ringer. Sound on your phone.”

“Oh, yes . . . sorry.” Flustered, I fumble with my cell, and before I can even switch it off, another text alert pings.

Grayson: I want to bend you over and watch as my cock slides in and out of you.

“So back to next week . . .”

“Yes,” I swallow over the desire lodged in every place it should be and try not to glance at my phone as it vibrates again.

“Are you good with that plan?” Rissa asks as I shift in my seat to abate the sudden ache burning brighter than bright.

“Yes. Sure. I think that sounds like a great plan.”

Grayson: I want my cock buried so deep that you feel every damn inch of me.

“Are you sure you’re okay?”

“Yeah, why?” My voice breaks like a prepubescent teenager.

Grayson: I want you to come so hard you have to bite the pillow.

“You look a little flushed. Are you coming down with something?”

Grayson: You always have a choice. Isn’t that what you said to me once? Make a choice, Sidney. Isn’t it time to head to lunch?

“I mean, yeah, maybe.” I pull at my collar some. “Maybe that’s why I feel so flushed all of a sudden.”

Grayson: Meet me on the backside of The Cottages. Room Six. Fifteen minutes.

“Either that,” she says as she stands and heads to the door, only turning back to give me a wink, “or you’re guilty as hell. Maybe you should go take care of that itch texting you . . . or take some Tylenol. Whichever one it is, I think you should take the afternoon off.”

Grayson: Choose me.

“Oh.” It’s the only thing I can think to say because my brain is otherwise occupied imagining Grayson following through on his promises.

“And, Sid?”

“Yeah?”

“I sure hope he’s every bit worth breaking the rules.” She winks. “It’s about damn time. Your secret is safe with me.”

Blog Tour: Piece of Work by Staci Hart

POW-BlogTour.jpg

Marble isn’t the only thing that’s hard at this museum.
His body is as chiseled as Adonis. His lips are as sculpted as David. And his ego is the size of the Guggenheim.
You know the type—wolfish smile and the gravity of a black hole. The kind of man who sucks all the air from the room the second he enters it. My cocky boss thinks this internship was wasted on me, and he doesn’t hesitate to let me know.
But he’s wrong, and I’m going to prove it to him. If I can stay away from his devil lips, that is. Lips that cut me down and kiss me in the same breath, leaving me certain he’s on a mission to ruin my life.
And maybe my heart.

Review by Lisa Kane

Hyo-rin Van De Meer is beginning her internship at The Met. Her first day is a disaster. Those who work in the art department are sleek and sophisticated and well groomed. Rin prefers the worn out jeans and beat up canvas sneaker look.

It was a look I’d seen a thousand times, one as cold as it was scathing, one that told me she was not only unimpressed, but disappointed.

Rin is to work under Dr. Court Lyons, the curator of the department. He is gorgeous, pretentious and aloof. Since we can read his POV we find out although he thinks Rin is attractive, he’s written her off as someone not being able to survive in the museaum climate. She is too shy, too scared to stand up for herself. Hmmm, all that from an introduction.

Rin hates attention of any kind. At 6 feet, she feels like an uncoordinated giraffe. She fails to see the elegance that is just under the surface. But her roommates see the potential and do an Eliza Doolittle transformation on her.

I didn't think I wanted to hide anymore.

I wanted to be seen.

The change in Rin’s appearance changes how she sees herself and her new found confidence changes the way other people (namely Court) see her. Research has always been Rin’s strong point-there’s little human interaction. So researching for Court and his upcoming ground breaking project is just where she excels. This is not lost on Court.

I’d never subscribed to the belief that clothes made the man, but I’d be damned if the clothes hadn’t turned Rin into a version of herself I wouldn’t have believed it I hadn’t seen it for myself.

Just being around Rin is all it seems to take for Court to want her. It’s a struggle not to cross the professional boundaries and Court’s temptations are getting the best of him.

There wasn’t a universe that existed wherein I was allowed to be attracted to the intern. Not only for my career, but for myself.

Rin doesn’t think someone like Court would have any interest in her. There is lots of intrigue going on at The Met. Court’s father is the President and he seems to have some kind of agenda when it comes to Rin. Court is antagonistic with him, and he keeps referring (in his POV thoughts) to not making the same mistake twice. He blows hot and cold with Rin. Quite the mystery at the museum.

“Why did you start dressing like this, Rin? Because if you think seducing me will get you anywhere, you’re wrong.”

Piece of Work has some shining moments of dialogue and those moments kept me interested enough to finish the story. It did seem to get dragged down with all the inner dialogue and Rin’s insecurities. Court is a very complicated character who vacillates between an overbearing alpha and a groveling contrite love interest. But I have to admit, that by the end of the story, these characters had grown on me.
I wanted to soothe his pain, reassure him, show him that it didn’t matter to me. To be that safe place for him. To protect him, even when he wouldn’t do the same for me.

Excerpt:
He smirked and flipped up his sunglasses.

Bastard.

“You’re early,” I clipped.

“I would have had my assistant text you, but she’s currently bedridden.”

You could have texted me.”

“I didn’t have your number,” he said simply.

“Oh.”

His eyes shifted to look behind me, and I turned to find my friends standing me in a row with my suitcase in front of them, my messenger bag on top, and fake smiles on all their faces, lips together, their judgment about as quiet as a foghorn.

“These your roommates?”

“Yup,” was all I said as I turned and took my suitcase, hugging each of them down the line with promises to text when we landed. And then I turned to Court, rolling my suitcase in front of me like like a riot shield.

I tried to pick it up to carry it over the threshold, but it was heavy, and before I could get far, he’d swept it out of my hands like it was a loaf of bread and not fifty pounds of mascara and shoes.

I waved at my friends, who offered encouraging smiles and hand gestures, and I closed that door, immediately regretting every decision I’d made to bring me to the moment I turned around.

He stood at the door to the backseat, holding it open for me like a gentleman, which I knew he was not. But the look on his face of regret and deference, under the hard shell of his brooding, was almost too much to bear.

So I did the only thing I could.

I ignored him.

I ignored his gorgeous lips as they tilted and the sleek cut of his jaw as I walked past him. I ignored the sight of his long legs as he climbed in next to me and the smell of him that made me want to grab him by the lapels of his jacket and bury my nose in his chest.

The driver took off, and I busied myself in my bag, looking for my headphones and book.

His eyes were on me. I pretended like I didn’t notice.

“You’re not wearing lipstick,” he stated.

Headphones, headphones, headphones. “It’s an international flight, Court. Of course I’m not wearing red lipstick for a ten hour flight.”

A pause. “Rin, I—”

Aha! I popped in my earbuds the second they were in hand.

His lips flattened, his face unamused. Rin, his lips said, but I smiled and shrugged, pointing to my ears.

“Noise canceling,” I said way too loud.

His chest rose and fell with a sigh I couldn’t hear—I’d already turned on music, a playlist we’d built the night before geared toward resisting douchery and unwanted-slash-totally-wanted advances—and he reached into his own bag, a leather affair at his feet, his hand disappearing into the bag and reappearing with a book, which he handed to me.

He watched me with his expression shrouded as I paused, my eyes on the offered book. An image of Penitent Magdalene by Tintoretto filled the cover, and I met his eyes, pulling my earbuds out by the cord.

“I thought you could use this. For your proposal,” he said, giving nothing away. “I…A colleague of mine wrote it, so if you have any questions, I can connect you. If you want.”

I took it from his hand, surprised and disarmed. “Thank you,” was all I said. He opened his mouth as if to speak again, but closed it, and with a nod, he reached back into his bag for his own book. Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake.

I put my earbuds back in place, trying not to bite my lip, but it found its way between my teeth despite the effort at the sight of him sitting there, dressed like that, reading Margaret Atwood. After giving me a thoughtful gift, a book he knew I would want, one I would need for my dissertation.

Court Lyons made about as much sense to me as a scrambled up Rubik’s Cube.

I leaned against the door as I flipped through his gift, doing my best to sort through the rush of questions and confusion as Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s sang about being cheated by the opposite of love. And I found I knew exactly the feeling.

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life -- a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can't forget that. She's also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She's been a wife, though she's certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She's also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she's been drinking whiskey.

From roots in Houston to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she's not writing, she's reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.
