Review: Folsom by Taryn Fisher and Willow Aster

The nation as we know it is a thing of the past. With the male species on the verge of extinction, a society called the End Men is formed to save the world. Folsom Donahue is one of twelve men whose sole purpose is to repopulate the Regions. The endless days spent having sex with strangers leaves Folsom with an emptiness no amount of women, money, or status can fill.

Until Gwen.

Gwen has wanted a child for as long as she can remember, but when she finally gets a chance to have her own, she uncovers a long-hidden truth. The injustice she sees moves her to help save the men whom no one else believes need saving.

A forbidden love, grown in a time of despair, ignites a revolution. Folsom and Gwen, torn between their love for each other and their sense of duty, must make a choice. But some will stop at nothing to destroy them.

Folsom is book one of the End of Men series.

Review by Jen Skewes

I will admit that I really don’t read this genre very often.   Now that I think about it, this may be the first book that I have read.   But finding out that Willow Aster and Taryn Fisher were writing a book together, I jumped at the chance to read it.  This book is unlike anything that I have read before. It is unique and so well written that it didn’t matter what this story was about.  I was hooked from the start.  And when it ended I was in shock.  Yes a part of me sat there, staring at my phone, thinking:  “what did I just read?”  But it was more than that.  It was the ending that left me hanging in a way that I am not sure I was ready for.

The world as we know it is changed in a major way.  The male population is almost wiped out.  With the exception of the End Men, whose job is to impregnate woman in the hopes of adding to the male species.  Folsom is the number one guy, for the simple reason that he has produced the most male babies.  He is also one of the originals.   Folsom doesn’t hate his job but he doesn’t necessarily love it either.  There are things in life that he wants but can never have and he seems to accept that.  Until he meets his next appointment, Gwen.  From the moment he met her she was different.  And from the moment they met I knew that they were meant to be together.  There is just one problem, and it’s a major one.  Gwen was just a job, one that he succeeded in and now he must stay away.   He wants to know her, wants to spend time with her but he also knows that he cannot give her anything.  He has nothing to offer and must move on.  But will it be that easy?  Can they find a way to be together?

This book!!  I cannot even explain what this book did to me.  You will fall in love with some of the characters, specifically Gwen and Folsom.  From the start I was completely captured by them as individuals.  But put them together and I wanted nothing more than for them to run away and live happily ever after.  I knew how hard that would be, but I refused to give up hope.  They were just so good together, with their undeniable connection, the attraction they felt for each other, and the way they just cared for each other.

While you will love them, there will be people that you absolutely hate, people that you want to believe in and trust but you are not so sure.  When the pieces finally all come together your mind is blown at all that is going on.  I was frustrated so many times with this book but at the same time I felt like I was on the edge of my seat because you never know when that bomb will drop, because at some point it will.  Every emotion that I felt during this book just kept building and building until the end when my emotions were completely all over the place.

Folsom is nothing of what I expected it to be but I loved every minute of it.  It is so different from what I am used to reading.  It was unique and blew me away.  I will be patiently waiting for the conclusion.  Ok that’s a lie.  I need the next book  like yesterday!!!

The hot Suit I had a one-night stand with one evening.
I didn't know anything about him, not even his name.
Only that we shared a taxi, and he was staying at the hotel where I worked.
We met in room 301. Where he commanded not only my body but my soul.
The next day he was gone and I only had a memory of him.
I could still taste his kisses, feel his demanding touch.
I searched for him for months. Daydreaming about him. Wondering if I'd ever find him.
Until the day I find myself staring face to face with his jeweled black eyes again.
He says lets keep it casual, and my heart knows that falling for this workaholic in a three-thousand-dollar suit is off the table.
Because he has a secret. One that's a deal breaker for me.

Review by Lisa Kane

Sara Davies works as a concierge at the Four Seasons hotel in New York. She wants to be a dancer on Broadway, but just like every other aspiring artist in NYC, she's got to make a living until she gets her first real break. She's bored and at loose ends. Fate steps in when she shares a cab with a gorgeous Adonis in a suit. Turns out they are headed for the same hotel-her to go to work, him to stay there as a VIP guest. Hot guy entices her with the promise of an unforgettable night-which he makes good on. But the next morning...

"I think its best that we leave it like this. I don't do..." He motions between us. "I don't do this."

He didn't even tell Sara his name.

Now before you hate nameless hot guy, let's just say he has been burned badly. Work is his life now and he is trying to untangle the mistakes of his past. He can't let himself get sidetracked by a woman.

Sara has some bad luck. Finding work is now an issue and she needs a roommate. In steps Bryn Heyworth. (we met Bryn Heyworth and Aaric Christos in Tycoon) Turns out Bryn is about to start her own fashion design business and is filling in as a dog walker. She's a life saver when Sara needs one.

But Sara still can't get her one night stand off her mind. She couldn't track down who he was from the guest list at the hotel. He must have checked in under an assumed name.

It was a taste that only made me crave more, and now I don't even look at other men because they're just not...that guy.

Life is starting to look up. When you least expect it fate steps in...

"Ian is Mrs. Ford's grandson," she explains to me.

Neither has forgotten the other. Ian may still have complications going on but he isn't ready to let Sara slip through his fingers again.

"We can keep it casual. It's best for both of us."

Yeah right, let's see how that works out for you.

Mogul has lots of angst and steam and hot hot hot encounters. Getting to catch up with Bryn and Aaric was a bonus. Ms. Evans can write broken sexy alpha millionaires like no body's business!

Excerpt:
My eyes lock on a third figure sitting with them. As I near, the man glances my way before quickly shifting his gaze. I continue to stare at him as I approach, and it doesn’t take long for his gaze to return to me. His large figure rises to full height as he stands to greet me, and I feel a bolt of electricity hit me in the chest as familiar eyes stare back at me.

He’s tall. Dark-haired. Gorgeous. With deep, thick-lashed eyes you want to sink into. And lips to suck on like they’re all that exists between you and heaven. I stop walking, stop breathing, because . . . he is here.

A moment passes and Bryn seems to notice my shock.

But shock doesn’t come close to it.

Because never in my whole life has my heart leapt so far and fast. It feels as if it’s ripping out of my chest. I can barely force my legs to move for fear of hearing my knees knock together. I struggle for air, but it feels like someone cut off my windpipe connecting my nose and lungs.

He wears a white dress shirt and black slacks, and his face is chiseled and brooding. The real shock lies in the intensity brewing in his dark eyes as they stay locked on mine. My heart speeds up as I hold his gaze. The city bustles around us. Making eye contact is not something I do often, living in a city of millions, but I can’t take my eyes off him.

The memory of having him inside me returns with a vengeance.

Bryn begins to introduce us. “Um. Ian, this is—”

“Sara. We’ve met,” Hot and Dirty Workaholic interrupts with a stiff smile.

Our eyes meet, and for a moment it feels like nothing else exists.

His name is Ian.

Fucking Ian, with his serious, handsome face and shiny, black hair. He’s as lit as I remember. Straight out of a Suits episode, and I am dying.

Excerpt

Caught up in my analysis, I almost miss the professor’s dismissing words. I snatch the planner from the desktop and shove it inside my bag. I don’t bother with the zipper; there isn’t much time to slip down the aisle and beat the other students. Why did I sit up here?
I lower my gaze and rush down the stairs. A slight hum fills the air as Marissa’s and the other students’ voices fade in the background. The curtain of protection my hair provides blocks the further surroundings, allowing me to concentrate on each step. Seven rows down.
The next moments happen so fast everything becomes a blur. A scuffling sound causes me to jerk to my right, but a wall of white fabric blocks my view as a sharp, jarring pain soars through my right shoulder. The impact shifts my book bag and knocks me off balance. I stumble forward.
“Whoa there,” a rich voice calls out. Strong, firm hands grip my waist, which keeps me from falling, but in haste I straighten too fast. The back of my head connects with a hard, bony surface, and I freeze as the words “Son of a bitch” screech behind me.
Laughter erupts, but the pounding in my chest drowns them out. Mouth agape, I turn to face the would-be assailant. He did, after all, hit me first. Jax stands a few inches away, rubbing the bottom of his chin, and I want to die of mortification. Then I make the mistake of following the path leading to his face. My heart nearly stops. He’s even sexier up close. Those deep brown eyes trap mine for a brief moment before my senses come back to me. I pull myself away and scurry down the remaining stairs, not looking back. When I reach the bottom level and close half the distance to the door, I hear him call out, but I’m not positive the “hey” was for me. The warmth flooding my face heats up a few degrees, but I push forward, my feet continuing to beat a path across the concrete. I don’t stop until the next line item on my itinerary is within sight—the coffee shop. Thank God, because I’m in dire need of caffeine. Yeah, I’m one of those strange people who needs a stimulant to relax.
Once the latte is in hand, I find a table and start to calm down. That is until the mortification of slamming my head into Jax’s chin rolls my stomach. Ugh. Not only did I draw attention to myself, but I was rude. I don’t think I apologized.
I drag my sociology book out and flip through the pages while sipping the hot latte. It doesn’t take long for me to realize I’m not accomplishing anything. I can’t focus. Abandoning the idea of studying, I reach inside my bag for my planner but come up empty. “What the heck?” I ask no one while rummaging through my backpack. Beads of sweat break across my forehead as I continue to shove my folders and books aside. Still, nothing.
Where the hell is it?
I mentally retrace my steps back to class. It was lying on the corner of my desk when class dismissed. I shoved it into the book bag when I stood. It has to be here. I blink away the tears threatening to form as the hard truth sinks in—it fell out. No. No. No. I dig deeper into the bag, willing it to appear. Before I go into pure panic mode, a ding sounds and pulls my gaze toward the front door.
And there he stands, Jaxon Jax Carrigan, holding a purple notebook in his left hand. My notebook.
He scans the room, and when he catches me seated in the booth, he glances upward and utters a soft curse. I remove my hand from my bag and will my heart to calm down. Play it cool. Acting casual, I take a gulp of my coffee, the caramel-flavored liquid burning the back of my throat.
“Looking for this?” He waves my most valued possession in the air before sliding into the seat across from me.
“Thanks.” I snatch my planner from his hands and tuck it deep within my bag. Even though I know the answer, I ask anyway. “How’d ya know where to find me?”
The corner of his mouth lifts. “You’re pretty easy to find. You have each day scheduled.”
Another wave of nausea hits my stomach. “You looked inside my planner?”
A dimple pops on his left cheek, and my heart starts racing again but from something other than fear.
“I may have glanced through it.”
Kill. Me. Now.
He chuckles at my lack of response. “I have to say, you have some pretty interesting lists. For instance, I now have recommendations for a good romance novel, or if I’m craving Chinese, four streets down from your dorm is Green Jade, which comes with a stellar five-star rating.”
I press my lips together and just stare at him.
“Really, I can see it being helpful, but isn’t the making friends one obvious?”
Oh, dear God, I seriously want to die. How many pages did he flip through? Some items on those lists are personal. Private.
“Let me tell you how not to make friends; don’t headbutt them in the chin.”
“I feel really bad about that. Are you okay?”
“I’m fine. Not even a mark.”
No, there isn’t. In fact, his face looks pretty damn good. That is, until his lips start to twitch. Fearing his next words, I hold my breath.
“How rude of me for not introducing myself. I’m number twenty on your ‘dating ban’ list.” He extends his hand. “Jax Carrigan.”

Cover Reveal: Family Ties by Stephie Walls

Release Date: June 21, 2018
Cover Design: Wicked by Design

Synopsis

With a history like ours, the meaning of the word family tended to tangle into something unrecognizable. DNA and bloodlines didn’t tie us together, and neither did our last names. Various shades of grey blurred the branches of our twisted family tree.
I wasn’t her brother.
They weren’t my parents.
Not that it mattered…

She was off limits.

Portia was my friend.
Then my foster sister.
And she’d always be the love of my life.

Goodreads

Excerpt

As adamant as I was that the stages of grief were nothing other than crap some shrink created to sell books and services, the truth remained. I had hit stage two with guns blazing shortly after I dropped Portia off at school. Anyone in my path could testify to that fact, and most made excuses for my poor behavior.
Hensley tried harder than anyone to get me to talk. “Jude, I don’t understand what happened.”
If I weren’t careful, I’d find myself in a counselor’s office exploring my feelings—as if I needed to explore how fucking bad it hurt for my mom to die. I experienced that shit every day—talking about it wouldn’t bring her back or take the pain away.
“I got into a fight.” And suspended for three days.
Ernie and Hensley sat with me at the kitchen table, and Baker laid his head on my thigh in support. He didn’t have a clue what was going on, only that I was unhappy and Ernie had done a lot of yelling.
“Over what?” She pleaded with me to let her in—she’d be happy with a few crumbs.
It didn’t matter over what. They wouldn’t understand, and I sure as hell wasn’t going to explain it in any detail. “A guy said some things about Portia.”
Ernie’s shoulders finally relaxed, and Hensley leaned over to cup my cheek in her hand.
“Sweetheart, I love that you want to defend your sister, but fighting is never the answer.”
My sister. And that’s why I’d never tell them the truth. “Okay.”
She stroked her thumb over my swollen cheek. The guy had gotten in one solid shot. While I’d never thrown a punch, I hadn’t realized what kind of advantage my height gave me when push came to shove.
“Are you sure you won’t consider talking to Dr. Vanderhugh? He was such a help to me when we had family planning issues.” Family planning equated to infertility, which brought the Shaws to Portia and later me.
“I’m fine. I just refuse to let anyone say things about Portia that aren’t true. Neither of you would have stood by while someone talked shit about her, either.”
“Jude!” Ernie’s defeated posture became determined. Ernie and I had always had a bond that Hensley and I didn’t share. I had a mom, but Ernie filled in the empty space left by an absent father. “Language.”
Seventeen years old, yet they believed I never cussed. Or just that I shouldn’t. “Sorry.” I wasn’t.
“I’m concerned that you’ve suddenly started defending with your fists instead of words. You’re such an articulate boy. It just doesn’t make any sense.” Hensley said all the right things; I just had no interest in hearing any of them.
My own mother would have slapped me upside the head—not only for my behavior but my attitude in general. That thought only served to elicit internal shame. I sighed, desperate to end the discussion and wrap up the family powwow. “I won’t do it again. I’m sorry. It got out of hand.”
I didn’t want to disappoint them, either of them. They’d been good to me for the better part of ten years. Not once had they missed anything going on in my life, skipped out on a holiday or birthday, or taken the easy path when my mom was sick—they deserved better than I currently gave. Even with that realization, I couldn’t stop the anger that poured from every part of my soul.
“Can I go now?” This wasn’t getting us anywhere. Either they needed to punish me or leave me alone. I deserved the first and needed the last.
Hensley made to say something, and Ernie put his hand up, halting her. “You can. But be prepared to spend the next three days working around the house. Your suspension will not be a vacation.”
I pushed the chair back more forcefully than intended when I got up and knocked it over. “Understood.” Instead of apologizing and picking it up, I left it lying there and walked out.
I hadn’t even made it to the bottom of the stairs when the sting of a firm grasp jerked my bicep. The force at which the hand held me indicated it was Ernie; even so, I glanced at the offending hand and then at my captor.
“I know you’re hurting right now. I get it. But you will be respectful in this house. And you will act like you have common sense outside of it. We are more than happy to get you someone to talk to if you don’t think it can be either of us.”
I glared at him through squinted eyes and jerked my arm from his grasp.
“Don’t push Hensley and me out, Jude. We both love you.” The pity that radiated from his expression and dripped from his words ate at me. This wasn’t the relationship the two of us had always had, and it wasn’t one I wanted now.
Ernie’s prying wouldn’t change anything and it certainly wouldn’t solve any of my problems. I wished he understood that I needed him to be normal, not protective. If he wanted to serve a purpose in helping me through this, then he needed to act as though nothing had changed. But he wasn’t going to handle anything that way, and I wasn’t going to direct his parenting path.
“I’m fine.” And I stomped up the stairs. I didn’t slam my door, even though I wanted to. Instead, I closed it, locked it, and put on headphones. There, I listened to the Beatles playlist Portia and I danced to the night of my mother’s funeral.
I tried to think back to that night, dancing with her while she attempted to relieve me of some of my grief, but I couldn’t let go of Chad Hartman taunting me in the halls about Portia.
“I heard she’s become quite the free spirit since she’s been gone.”
“Rumor has it, if she was a virgin when she got to school, she sure isn’t now.”
“Frat parties just aren’t the same without Portia Shaw. Seems everyone on frat row has taken their turn.”
The guy had never cared for Portia, although I didn’t have a clue why. He’d teased her mercilessly last year, and somehow, she had managed to ignore him. Not me. The first words out of his mouth, I’d shoved him against the lockers in the D hall. The second insult and my fist met his face. That was the one time he got in a shot. I’d hit him gain, which spun him back into the foot traffic away from the wall. He’d wiped at his bloody lip and then spewed the filth that brought the teachers running. It probably wasn’t his words that grabbed their attention so much as me laying him out on the floor of the senior hall, straddling him, and punching him until someone pulled me off.
I wasn’t sure if I struggled with the horrid things he said or that I couldn’t be sure they weren’t true. Portia had been gone a month and hadn’t come home once. Her calls happened less frequently and were shorter when they came. I didn’t want to believe anything Chad said, yet I couldn’t deny it with any certainty. Something had captured her attention. It might just be growing up and independence. Or it could be all of Phi Beta Kappa.

RELEASE DATE: Monday, July 23, 2018
Synopsis:

It was just a typical Monday.

Until the big boss asked me to make the pitch for a prospective new client.

After two years on shaky ground at work because of my screw up, an opportunity to impress the senior partners was just what I needed.

Or so I thought…

Until I walked into the conference room and collided with the man I was supposed to pitch.

My coffee spilled, my files tumbled to the ground, and I almost lost my balance.

And that was the good part of my day.

Because the gorgeous man crouched down and looking at me like he wanted to eat me alive, was none other than my ex, Gray Westbrook.

A man who I’d only just begun to move on from.

A man who my heart despised—yet my body obviously still had other ideas about.

A man who was as charismatic and confident as he was sexy.

Somehow, I managed to make it through my presentation ignoring his intense stare.

Although it was impossible to ignore all the dirty things he whispered into my ear right after I was done.

But there was no way I was giving him another chance, especially now that he was a client…was there?
