4 star review

Cautious begins where Disastrous left off. Mia Sullivan is aware of Marcus DeLuca’s double life; being a respected lawyer and his lifelong involvement in the mob. Marcus wishes things were different, that he could somehow break away from the mob. His father spent his whole life firmly entrenched with the mob and ended up killing himself.  Both he and his brother Jimmy are up to their eyeballs in illegal activities. Jimmy lost his wife and is raising his daughter, Elle, by himself. He feels he will someday leave her parentless, because really how can his lifestyle lead to any good?

Mia longs for a normal life with Marcus. She is still studying to be a lawyer and wants to pursue her dreams. Recently her mother has introduced her to the grandparents she never knew and she loves being part of an extended family. She treasures her relationship with Marcus’ mom and niece. One part of her life is quite normal, and the other part has to make peace with Marcus’ mob ties.

“What would I do without you, Mia?” “You’ll never have to find out because I’ll always be here, Marcus. I’ll always be yours.”
Marcus wants to take things to the next level; he wants Mia to move in with him. She is cautious and wants to take things slowly. She left him once before because of a lack of honesty in their relationship and she wants to make sure that their attraction for each other isn’t the only glue holding them together. Marcus, along with his brother Jimmy, is trying to find a way out of his involvement with the mob. He is trying to find out who was working with Mia’s brother Michael when he died, as an informant. His uncle, Lou Sorrento has a strangle hold on his family. Now Lou is involving Marcus’ legitimate nightclub as a place for his drug exchanges. Lou takes great delight in torturing those disloyal to him; suffering sends a strong message. He threatens to kill Mia if Marcus continues to buck his authority.

“Whatever you say, Marcus. I’ll just go home with Megan and sit around and wait for whenever I get to have My Marcus back. Because the one in front of me at this very moment…I have no idea who he is. I want my Marcus: the loving, caring, and passionate one.”

Montes has continued Mia and Marcus’ story with the same ferocious tenacity with Cautious as she did with Disastrous. Theirs is not a pretty world. There is so much violence, drugs and guns that surround them. You can not help but root for these two and for Jimmy also, to find someway out of this hell. The secondary characters hold strong footholds in the story lines. Mia’s friends Jeremy and Megan are so dysfunctional and yet so right for each other. Marcus’ mom has lived a large part of her life with guilt over a stupid mistake on her part, and my heart broke for her. This is a fast paced, heart racing novel that is so enjoyable. I loved the epilogue.
