Synopsis

ROCK STAR? RECOVERING ADDICT? MURDERER?
Yeah, they all hold true.
How can you explain to someone what it's like not to care? Not about yourself or the person standing next to you. I've lost that, the ability to feel and show affection.
I DO, HOWEVER, HAVE A HEART.
Sometimes, when I chase the dragon, it thunders through my head like a drum, reminding me it still beats.
It's still there.
HOLLOW. EMPTY. WASTED.
My agent says I have one more shot. A single, solitary chance to stay in the music biz, but there is one massive problem.
HER. SYN LANDRY.

4 star review by Jen Skewes

I always love reading a book about a sexy rock star, you know the manwhore who finds love when least expected, giving up all the women.   But lately I have been drawn to the broken and damaged characters who believe that they don't deserve love or anything good in their life. The ones who have so much pain and guilt that they are completely broken inside.  Wasted heart gives you a little bit of both. This is the story of  Rhye....who we first met in Nicole Reed's ruining Series.  After reading and loving that series I knew I was in for an emotional ride with Wasted Heart. And Ms. Reed certainly did not disappoint.

Rhye is a sexy rock star who is battling dark demons from his past. When we first met Rhye he was in love with a girl named Jay. But there relationship was toxic. They found comfort in drugs and each other. While Jay managed to move on and now lives a happy life, Rhye's life has continued on a downward spiral. The guilt that he has been carrying around over the death of two of his friends has been weighing him down.  He continues to drown his guilt and pain from the past in drugs. He is so far into this deep dark world of addiction and drugs that he can't get out, and he's not really sure that he wants to. His manager comes to see him and explains to him that he is to get sober, go to Nasville to work on his music, because if he doesn't he will lose everything. This is his last chance. So now comes the time in life where he has to make a decision. The truth is music has always been his life, and what was always most important to him. But right now the world of drugs has sucked him in and giving them up is not something he is ready for...until he finds out that his refusal to get clean also effects is mother as well. He cant stand the thought of not being able to be there for her and support her financially. He reluctantly agrees to the plan to go to Nashville. Not knowing that what he finds in Nashville and the people that he meets will change his life.

Syn Landry is a 19 year old country star. Syn has had her fair share of heartbreak and loss.  But she's never let it get her down and has just become stronger because of it. She is in the studio working on her music when he walls in; Rhye Clark.  She knows exactly who he is and what has been going on in his world the last few years.  When they first meet, Rhye is a complete jerk to her, in a way that most woman would forget they ever met him and just move on.  As much as show knows she should stay away, she can't.  There is something about Rhye that draws her to him.  When she sees him sing for the first time it is almost as if she sees that spark and passion in him that has been missing.  She sees something in him that no one else sees.  And despite that fact that she barely knows him, she believes in him and his ability to get clean, believes that he worthy of love, friendship and living,  if only Rhye believed it too.  Syn wants Rhye, but she also wants to help him. She is exactly what Rhye needs right now in his life, someone who is there for him and won't give up on him, especialluy when he is so willing to give up on himself.  But how much can Syn really help him without risking her own heart being broken, especially if he won't let her in.  Will she risk her heart and help him become the man she knows is there underneath all the pain or will she just walk away and let him continue to drown in his addiction?

"Whatever you say: I tgell her, knowing I would agree no matter what at this point.  She is my beating heart."

Nicole Reed has once again has done an amazing job with the emotions and characters that she creates.  I loved Rhye in the Ruining series and couldn't wait to read his story.  Seeing him so hurt and damaged and in the state that he was in just broke my heart.  He was a jerk at times, but I think that just came with the state of mind that he was in.  Deep down he had a heart.  Once he actually got to know who Syn Landry really was, he started to find that he did have a connection with her.  She was nothing like the person he expected her to be.  But he knew he should stay away from her, knew in the end he would just hurt her.  But Syn was in love and determined to help him and stand by his side.  I loved her for her strength and determination.  I will admit that Syn falling in love with Rhye was a little too instant but it worked in a way.  She had a connection with him and didn't want to give up on it.

"She thinks he keeps me straight when, in all reality, she is my true north."  "The time that Syn and I spend together, especially on the phone, makes the fucking blackness in my life somewhat easier to deal with."

This book explores the world of drug addiction and how much of an effect is has on a person and those around you.  It was raw, intense and emotional and filled with the angst that Nicole Reed loves to give us. Rhye and Syn were were complete opposites in so many ways but yet so perfect for each other.  They had this undeniable connection.  I loved how Syn fought and never gave up on him, even when there were times that she should have just walked away.  Rhye knew how she made him feel but knew at the same time he shouldn't explore his feelings because he couldn't give her what she wanted or needed.  But in the end they just needed and wanted each other.

Syn wasn't Rhye's only support system.  There was his life coach who I loved and loved the friendship that he built with Syn.  We do see a little bit of Jay in this one, in a moment that was perfect and heart warming.  Rhye and Syn's journey certainly was not an easy one, but one that I enjoyed going through with them.  Wasted Heart is an emotional and touching story of healing, letting go of the past, finding yourself again.  But it also shows what lengths someone will go to for love.  Excellent job by Ms. Reed.  I would love to see more of them in the future....hint, hint:)
