4 star review by Lisa Kane

Mia’s father Oliver is dead and she won’t be shedding any tears over it. A successful doctor, Oliver was a monster behind closed doors. He beat Mia and abused her mentally as well as physically. She has scars that she carries on the inside as well as the outside of her body. His death brings freedom of one kind but she is still a victim. Her boyfriend Forbes is exactly like her father. He hits her and she is trapped by her own choice. This cycle is what she knows and what she believes she deserves. She has an outlet for the disgust she feels at herself, one she keeps hidden from everyone.

Four months ago I discovered that I had gotten myself into a relationship with the exact same man as my father when Forbes backhanded me during a disagreement.

She was told a story about her mother’s death. That is blown to bits when she finds papers that her mother gave up her rights to her and abandoned her. She has her name and her mother’s last known address. Should she find her? She wants to get away from Forbes, every time he hits her he shows remorse, until the next time. And there is always a next time. She shows up unexpectedly at his home and finds him having sex with someone else-his reaction to seeing her-a nice big smirk on his face. When she tells him she’s had enough, he lets her know she will be participating next time and every time that he wants her to, because she belongs to him and lets him treat her like this. When he tries to rape her, finally she fights back.

He could have stopped the cycle. Just loved me. I would have loved him back without question. I would have given him all of me. My heart. Together, we could have healed each other. But instead, all he gave me was a co-dependent, hate fueled, abusive relationship. And now I’m just left with an empty chasm, lined with that hatred, and bitter resentment.

Mia flees and spur of the moment decides to find her mother. Travelling halfway across the country is one way to get away from Forbes. She stops for a meal at a diner in Colorado, and Beth the waitress, answers her question about a motel for the night. That’s when Mia meets Jordan-and makes quite the impression.

Hot girl steps close to the counter and sets her bags to the floor. She smells good. Like a mixture of vanilla and expensive perfume. I want to lean in close and inhale. And possibly lick her.

Jordan is gorgeous and cocky. His dad owns the motel and he is helping run it while he is away taking care of a sick relative. His constant companion is his dog Dozer. This dog has so much personality he should have a companion novella all his own. Jordan takes a look at Mia and certain parts of him spring to life quickly.

Tonight is going to be a long night, knowing I’ve got sex incarnate upstairs, in one of my beds, and there’s not a damn thing I can do about it. And the only person I’ll be sharing a bed with tonight is Dozer and his farts-awesome.

He senses immediately she can’t be one of his usual hook ups-no love them and leave them with this one! In spite of the sunglasses she wears to cover up what Forbes did to her face, he sees the bruises. He is drawn to her and she is to him.

I clench my hands in my lap. “The asshole that did that to you…?” She bites her lip and looks away. The caveman inside me is beating his chest right now, ready to issue some serious smack down on the shithole that did this to her. No woman should ever go through that. Especially not her. Definitely not her. “I can hurt him, Mia. Just say the word and it’s done.”

Jordan has his share of secrets that he hides. He believes he is trouble in every sense of the word. But he wants to help Mia find her mother. He is still grieving at the loss of his the stepmom who raised him. She passed away from cancer a few months ago and his father, a former police officer, is devastated at the loss. She was his child hood sweetheart, they were separated right after high school. His dad met his mom, she died in childbirth and he met Belle when she came back to town. She raised Jordan and she was really the only mother who knew. He misses her and feels the loss deeply. If he can help Mia to get her answers he wants to, of course he is willing to do most anything to get close to her.

Mia and Jordan share some explosive chemistry and when they do give into their attraction, they are smokin’ hot together. Jordan thinks he will never be good enough for her, he has skeletons and demons and as hard as he is trying to get his life on track, he has a long way to go. Mia was studying to be a physician when her father died, and she got away from Forbes. She still hides her coping mechanisms and she has huge self-esteem issues. How can she trust a man, even one as wonderful as Jordan? When both their pasts collide will it bring them closer or drive them apart?

I really liked this book, the characters are so flawed and yet fit together so beautifully like pieces of a jig saw puzzle. How they have come to be at the same point in their lives so they can intersect with each other is fate. Or maybe it is karma finally giving them a break. Sometimes one has to go as low as they can fall in order to stand strong on their own and let love in.
