*Synopsis*

She has a secret.

I’m complicated. Not broken or ruined or running from a past I can’t face. Just complicated.

I thought my life couldn’t get any more tangled in deceit and confusion. But I hadn’t met him. I hadn't realized how far I could fall or what I'd do to get free.

He has a secret.

I’ve never pretended to be good or deserving. I chase who I want, do what I want, act how I want.

I didn’t have time to lust after a woman I had no right to lust after. I told myself to shut up and stay hidden. But then she tried to run. I’d tasted what she could offer me and damned if I would let her go.

One secret destroys them.

4 Star Review by Jen Hagen

Obsidian Fox is a Ghost -- a trained killer ready to strike without you knowing he’s even there.  He began the life of a Ghost at the age of 6 when he was taken from his family; he is now in his late 20’s and has been out of the regimen for 2 years, although his intense conditioning still remains ingrained within him.

Kill. Sever. Bleed. Devour.   This is Fox’s mantra.  The last task he was given was 2 years ago and he has yet to complete it.  Before he completes it he just wants a chance to live a normal life as best he can and to try to experience the world as others see it.  He keeps to himself and lives a lonely life; a life that he periodically needs to seek comfort by self harming or having others inflict pain upon him.  It’s the only way he can stay in control and keep his conditioning from taking over his life.

Hazel is 22 years old and has not had an easy life.  The only way she has been able to make a go for herself has been to lie on resumes.  She has just received devastating news the day she is captivated by Fox’s aura.  Not only is Hazel intrigued by Fox, but he feels the same intensifying pull.  He has a proposition for her that she can’t pass up as it would mean a world of difference for someone she holds dear to her; in fact it might even mean the difference between life and death.

Each of them come to the table with a set a rules to obey.  Fox’s first rule is the most demanding and the most challenging… “Top rule.  Unbreakable rule.  Don’t. Ever.Touch.Me.”

Fox has a past that is horrid.  I felt a massive amount of empathy during Fox’s sporadic recollection of his horrendous past and how it has affected him to this day.  He didn’t have a childhood and has no family.  He lets no one enter his emotions, only because he tries so hard not to feel anything other than the pain he asks his body to withstand.   He wants to be able to love, but has no idea how to go about it and he will not allow anybody to touch him, to caress him, to show him that he can be loved.  Any touch sends Fox into his conditioning stature and he becomes a dangerous man.

“The more I looked, the more I saw, and the more my heart went out for him.  He was like a rabid dog, snarling, frothing at the mouth, guaranteed to bite my hand off if I got too close, but in his feral eyes lurked a plea.”

Try as she might, Hazel can’t seem to bring Fox into accepting the sense of touch.  However there is one person with serene innocence and honesty who seems to break through his walls and can bring Fox to his knees.   The moment she is gone brings out the beast that he has tried to keep hidden.

“His entire body trembled, hands open and closing, eyes wide and wild.  He looked completely and utterly destroyed.  He needed soothing.”

Soothing…how can you possibly soothe a person who is incapable of feeling touch or sweet caresses? There’s no arms to wrap around him to seek solace and comfort in, only annihilation will help soothe him.

Fox was a man with burdens and demons as great as they could possibly come.  I have read Pepper’s previous works and her stories are not your typical romance tales.  She pulls us in with her alpha males seeking a nonconventional relationship.  I found “Destroyed” to be a slow start and included a few instances of graphic violence that may not be suitable for the reader who seeks a heart and flowers romance.   But this is Fox and Hazel’s romance, and both of them are broken from their pasts.  They can both fix each other, only if they allow their pasts to stay out of the present.

“Fate had brought us together because we could help each other.  I didn’t believe in fairty-tales, but I did believe in serendipitous encounters.”

Deleted Scene
I screeched to a halt outside the apartment block. Oscar refused to tell me the address, but I didn’t waste time arguing. I could’ve beaten it out of him, but I had other means.
I’d learned from his refusal last time and attached a GPS tracker to his car. It was a simple matter of following the most recent route he’d taken with the app on my android.
The purr of my black Porsche set my nerves on edge. The dash clock said it was one a.m.
Too early for a house call, but this wasn’t just a house call. This was a flat out demand for her to come back. I would give her anything if only she’d give me one last chance.
Turning the engine off, I dragged bruised and cut hands through my unkept hair, and climbed out of the sports car. The sleek lines glowed like an expensive gem beneath the street lights. Raindrops ran down my face, feeling like the world cried for me. The sky sensed my inability to re-enter the human life—it mourned on my behalf the regret I felt.—ROAN
