Blurb

Plight
[plahyt]
Noun: a difficult, or otherwise unfortunate
situation.
Verb: pledge or solemnly promise. Be engaged to be
married.

I promised
myself to a man. Well, technically, I promised myself to a boy. We were eight
years old. Neighbours. He gave me a Cheezel, pushed it onto my finger, and
asked me to marry him.
I ate the
Cheezel.
I also
said, “Yes” but that we’d have to wait until we were thirty.
It was my
thirtieth birthday last week and now he’s calling in that promise.
Seriously,
Elliot Parker is insane if he thinks
that an out of the blue private Facebook message stipulating the binding law of
an oral contractual agreement is going to seal our twenty-two-year bullshit
engagement.
Insane.
I wonder if
he really does look like his profile picture, though.

Danielle Cunningham is one week past her thirtieth birthday. She is reminded of that fact when she receives a private Facebook message from Elliot Parker, an old friend she has not heard from in seventeen years. When they were kids, they were promised to each other, he put a Cheezel on her finger (think a cheese puff but shaped like a ring) and the deal was sealed. Now Elliot has come to collect.

Elliot Parker is insane if he thinks that a private Facebook message stipulation the binding law of an oral contractual agreement is going to seal our twenty-two year bullshit deal. In.Sane.

Years have gone by. Years without a word from Elliot.

We hadn’t so much as spoken to each other in seventeen years when he moved houses and we went our separate ways, so his message had come out of nowhere.

There are lots of witty messages exchanged. It seems Elliot is a lawyer and is coming back home to work on a gardening project. When they were kids, a neighbor saved them from flash floods and a memorial garden was planted in his honor. However, over the years, it has been neglected and in danger of being filled in. He has gotten a stay from the courts to give the towns people a chance to clean it up and restore it to its original beauty. So he’s actually coming into town for a reason-not to marry Danielle!

The truth is Elliot has harbored feelings for Danielle since they were kids. It’s no hardship seeing her again. Sparks fly when they first lay eyes on each other after all these years.

Except Danielle had never been the girl of my dreams, she’d been the girl of my reality, my best friend and that was even better.

But the more time Danielle spends with Elliot, the more she realizes she has missed their friendship. She doesn’t want to cross over any lines and ruin things for them if it does not work out. Elliot doesn’t share those same concerns.

I’d only ever waited for her-twenty-two years, in fact.

How will Elliot get Danielle to see that they aren’t kids any longer, they are adults with adult feelings. Feelings that are genuine and should be given a chance to explore.

No, I’m just saying that you can’t be friends after you’ve been lovers. It never works out. I don’t want us to not be friends, Elliot. Ever.”

Elliot is a resourceful guy who knows what he wants, but will he be able to make Danielle see what is right in front of her?

”But you did give up,” I cried, letting it burst out of me.
“Yeah, I did, when I was a kid that didn’t know any better. But I’m an adult now, and I know that giving up on you was the single biggest regret of my life.”
