Amelia

He says that
together they twisted him.

Made him the
monster he’s become.

But you can’t
become something that wasn’t inside you all along.

A tear drops to
the sketchbook on my lap, the blob smearing the lead. I wipe it away with the
tip of my finger and watch the stain spread to the edge of the page.

I can’t seem to
stop drawing that night.

The night when
the Scafoni brothers stalked into our home and we were made to wear those
rotting, disgusting sheaths and forced to stand on those ancient blocks as
Sebastian Scafoni, first-born bastard, looked us over like we were cattle.

I can’t stop
drawing the look on his face when he saw Helena.

Even if she
wasn’t bound like she was, she’d have stood out.

She always thought
herself the ugly duckling but she’s the most beautiful of all. She’s special.
Always was. Different from us. And so much stronger.

Crap.

I swipe the back
of my hand across my nose and listen to the sound of tears drop fat and heavy
onto the page and this time when I lay my hand on the sketch, it’s to smear the
wet across like maybe I can wipe away that night. Rub it off the page. Erase it
out of history like it never happened.

“Oh, now look
what you’ve done,” he says. His voice is deep and low, and I swear I can feel
it as much as hear it.

He takes my hand
with his gloved one and pulls it away.

“Ruined it.”

I look at him. I
finally make myself look at him.

“I hate you.”

He grins. Shrugs
a shoulder, his grip growing infinitesimally harder.

I glance at my
palm—it’s black from the pencil—and look down at the page in front of me.

He’s right. It’s
ruined.

But it doesn’t
matter. I have dozens like it.

Hundreds.

Thousands.

I can’t stop
drawing that night.

Can’t stop it
from happening.

Can’t stop the
Scafoni bastards from walking into our lives, upending everything. Coming into

When he meets with a beautiful client for a coffee date Christine tells him she wants to hire him to take her best friend Elle to a cocktail reception and Christine's wedding. She got dumped by Jeremy, who is best friend's with Christine's groom and he's going to be there. With his beautiful new girlfriend, whom he wasted no time acquiring after their break up.

She makes it clear that this is a date...no sex included.

Boyfriend for Hire is a quick read with a familiar trope-the escort falls for the client and is torn up with guilt and is afraid of being discovered.  All in all, it's a good story, but I was hoping there would have been a twist or two to the story to add a different take to it.

This series has lost none of its intrigue and suspense! When Deal with the Devil ended on that huge cliffy, India Baptiste (really, it's India Forge now) left Jericho's island with Bastien de Vere, his sworn enemy. Bastien is up to no good and is determined to ruin Jericho's life. Jericho is no fool and and what's his will stay his...and that means India. 

My business is my life. That's one thing that never changes, no matter what. But today, I let myself get sidetracked. Because of her. 

Look for some familiar beloved characters from some previous series (Score!) In Luck of the Devil, we see Jericho slowly thawing from his hardened shell and Indie letting down her guard long enough to trust Jericho with something other than her body. 

What would it be like to always know someone would be there to catch you, no matter what? That you will never fall? That you're safe?

I loved Jessica Ruben’s Vincent and Eve series and was excited to find out that she was writing another book, based on a character from this series. I immediately became a fan of Ms. Ruben’s after reading this series.  Her writing just sucks you in and Warrior Undone was no different/

Lauren is in Vegas for her friend’s Bachelorette party.  The last person she ever expected to see was Slade, the guy she spent one hot, passionate and amazing night with, after her friend Eve’s wedding.    There was no denying the chemistry then and when she sees him again it still exists.  This man just exudes sex.  Everything about him is hot and sexy.  When things go wrong at the club, they are both at, he is right by her side taking care of her for the remainder of the night.  When she wakes up in the morning, it all comes back to her and she realizes that she needs to get out of there fast.  But when she gets home things aren’t easy for her. She no longer feels like herself. Or maybe she just hasn’t been her true self for a long time.  A phone call to her best friend Eve brings her right back to Vegas for the next two weeks. But that also means seeing Slade, since he is best friends with Eve’s husband.

Slade is a really good man, but he is also a very broken man.  He is a retired Navy SEAL and lately what he saw wile overseas is beginning to haunt him. His mind keeps bringing him back to the past, causing issues in his life and turning him into someone that he is not. He is battling PTSD in a bad way, but he is also battling it in his own way and by himself.  Seeing Lauren again brings back memories of that one night together knows she was love and a family, but he also knows that he cannot give that to her.  She is here for a few weeks and can only give her a small part of him while she is here./. She wants more.  Will giving her more only hurt her in the end?  You will have to read to find out what happens.

I loved Slade.  He has so many demons to face and the way he chooses to battle them may not have been the right way, but I think he was so afraid of what he would lose.   Not realizing that doing it his way truly could cost him a lot more.  He is a good man despite what he is going through or his actions.  I could not help but feel for this man and all that he has been through.  I saw how much Lauren meant to him and how he wanted to be the best man for her, but sometimes things out of your control take over and you are not sure how to handle them or make them go away. 

I really liked Lauren but at times she seemed to be wishy washy when it came to him.  I understand her feelings and wanting him, and I also understand her taking whatever she could get from this man.  But I think it was more about her feelings towards the end where she was showing her strength, but I felt like it wasn’t her/. I can’t go into too much detail without giving away spoilers so I will just leave it at that. 

I loved this book.  I loved Slade and Lauren together, even if at times I wasn’t sure if they should be together.  I will admit that at times their decisions, actions and feelings gave me a bit of whiplash but in the end all I wanted was for them to be happy and together.  This book deals with a heavy topic which Ms. Ruben handled with care.  You see just enough to understand the demons and torture that Slade has been going through.  I felt all the emotions with this book. The love, the hurt, the pain and the happiness.  Another great book from Ms. Ruben.
