4.5 Stars by Jen Skewes
I always look forward to anything that Trudy Stiles
writes. She knows how to make me feel
all kinds of emotions during her stories.
I love the characters that she creates but to me her stories also feel so real. They are the kind of stories that will touch your heart in some way. It is going to be hard to write this review
without giving away too much detail regarding the storyline but I will try my
best. First I will say that I absolutely
loved this beautiful and emotional story.
Epic Sins is a story of two broken people who have been dealt some
crappy hands in life and both of them have handled it very differently. But together they somehow manage to save each
other and find something that neither one of them expected, love and
happiness.
Sam had the perfect childhood with parents who absolutely loved
and adored her. They taught her so much
in life. But at the age of 16 a horrific
incident left her with a tremendous amount of pain and grief when her parents
died. After that she went on to live
with her Aunt Peggy. She is now a
neonatal nurse and loves her job. You
know the saying, “when life hands you lemons, make some lemonade?” Well I think this describes Sam’s life
perfectly. No matter what has happened
to her she has managed to get through it and persevere. But when something happens that causes her to
be on administrative leave she wonders if this is really where she
belongs. The guilt and the pain is
eating her up. But then her Aunt has a
proposition for her that she can very well refuse. But her aunt means the world to her and she
knows that there is no way she can say no to her. But what happens in the months to come is
nothing of how she expected her life to go.
Garrett also knows pain very well. He too lost his father when he was
young. But his circumstaces are very
different. His father left and never came back. He chose to leave his family. So you can imagine the pain he feels and while it may be the same loss that Sam feels I think his pain is also very different. When we first meet Garett he is the typical rock star bad boy who sleeps with may women and is never one to settle down. Until a prior hook up shows up on the tour bus and changes his life forever. Garrett is now faced with a situation that he is not sure how to handle at all, he's not even sure that he wants to face it. But his housekeeper who is also a surrogate mother to him assures him that everything will be fine and it will all work out. But Garrett is still very unsure of it all.
Sam is unexpectedly thrown into Garrett's life because of her aunt. She is not sure how she feels about it or about Garrett himself. Honestly I think her first impression of Garrett is one that many would probably feel in this situation. I understand why she felt that way but I also understood Garrett's fears as well. But as time went on I loved watching Garrett start to open himself up more. Not just with the situation but also with Sam. He wanted to become a better person because of Sam's presence in his life. He opened up his heart to her and that is something he never thought he would do. But as life sometimes does, it threw another curve ball their way. As if they had not been through enough these two are now faced with another obstacle. Will everything that they have been through and the love that they have for each other be enough to get through this one?
I love Trudy's Stiles book. I think that when she writes a book she writes it from her heart. And I think that is the exact reason why I always feel connected to her characters and invested in their stories. She tells stories that feel so real, she creates characters that have flaws just like all of us and she manages to bring out all of the emotions. And Epic Sins is no different. This story felt so real and so true to life. Yes Garrett is a rock star with a bad boy image but that is in no way the focus of this story and that is what I loved. This book is about so much more than that. Sam and Garrett find each other and learn to both open up there hearts to each other. I think in ways they were meant to be together. I felt connected with Sam and Garrett, from the time that we learn about their past to the moment these two connect to the very end. I loved taking this journey with them. I also loved the supporting characters such as Cassie who is Sam's best friend since childhood and Garrett's bandmates, especially Heath :) Another amazing and beautiful story from Ms. Stiles.
