Review: Beautiful Liar by Natasha Knight

Slater

Everything I believed was a lie. Everything except for her, the one person I blamed for it all.

MacKayla Simone was beautiful. She was sexy as hell. She was also the setup.

One night.

Sex that rocked my world.

Rocked it to its very foundations because the next thing I knew, she and I made the headlines of every paper, every news channel across the country, and it cost me everything.

But that wasn't the worst of it. That came when I learned who was behind the setup. That was when I understood what it meant to be destroyed absolutely.

I don't know why I went after MacKayla. She'd been a pawn just like me. But it was all I could do, all I had left. Hell, it was the one thing keeping me from tumbling into the abyss and never coming back into the light.

Find her. Find the girl who'd screwed me. Find her and make her pay.

MacKayla

I didn't know who Slater Vaughn was, but if I had, it wouldn't have mattered. Not when my sister was in trouble. I would have done what I did anyway. You can judge me. You can call me a whore. But I would have done it anyway.

One night, they'd said. Make him want you, let him have you. Easiest money in the world for just one night of my life.

Only it wasn't one night because that night obliterated Slater Vaughn, and he came after me. He told me I owed him, and truthfully, I did. Hell, maybe those years in hiding, I'd been waiting for him to find me. To punish me. To make me pay.

Maybe I sought his forgiveness all along.

But now that he had me, how far would he take this game? Slater Vaughn was a broken man. He had nothing left to lose. What was to keep him from taking me with him into his darkness?

Beautiful Liar is a standalone novel. No Cliffhanger.  Recommended for readers 18+ who like a dirty talking and very dominant Alpha male.

Review by Jen Skewes

Beautiful Liar is the first book that I have read by this author.  I really enjoyed this one and found myself not wanting to put it down.  But with that being said there was a part of this book that did confuse me a little and I am honestly not sure how I felt about it, but it still managed to keep me intrigued and wanting to know what happened.

Three years ago Slater’s world was completely destroyed.  He was set-up by two people that he loved and trusted.  He was set-up in a way that if he gave into temptation he would lose everything.  And unfortunately for Slater that is exactly what happened.  It is now three years later and Slater is still angry and looking for revenge.  There was another person that played an instrumental part in this set up and her name is MacKayla Simone.  Now Slater was wrong for what he did and he is just as much to blame as the other parties involved.  But it is almost like he does not see it that way.  He wants revenge on Mac and blames her for losing everything.

When he finally does find her and sees her he is not really sure of his plan.  What exactly does he do now?  How does he get the revenge that he has been seeking for the past three years?  What happens next, I don’t think was his plan at all but when he is around her things started happening that he never expected.  His way of getting revenge turned into something that was completely unexpected, I think by both Mac and Slater as well as myself.   He "punished" her in ways that was a bit surprising but Mac is so torn up about what happened and how much Slater lost because of her that she feels she deserves whatever punishment he has planned for her.  So she takes it.  And in some weird way what they have turns into something more than either of them expected.  They have a past together and are connected in a bad way.  Can these two really make this work?

When we first met Slater I have to say I thought he was a complete bastard.  I understood his reasons for wanting revenge.  I get that he felt he needed to blame someone and that someone would be Mac.  But what confused me was the way he went about his revenge. The way in which he treated Mac, the way he seemed to “punish” her was something that I did not understand.

There was an element of BDSM in this book and it was in relation to Slater wanting Mac in a sexual way but at the same time wanting to punish her.  I have no problem with BDSM or honestly what they necessarily did I just did not get it.  I didn’t understand where this part of him came from, or why this was how he thought to seek revenge.  And to be honest I thought his actions were a bit harsh considering they weren’t technically in a relationship.  But as time went on I grew to like Slater.  He was a very loving and caring man and there were two sides to their relationship.  The controlling sexual side and the loving side outside of the bedroom. But that also caused a bit of confusion because at times it felt like there were two sides to him as well.  And once they both admitted to their feelings I felt like that part of him disappeared and it was never really talked about.

I really loved Mac and felt for her because she had been through so much.  I felt bad for the guilt that she carried around.   And because of that guilt she felt she deserved to be punished.  This frustrated me completely but what her and Slater had was honestly in a way a very good connection.  They both enjoyed the same things and were both able to open up to each other.  Mac had a huge heart and you could see that where her family and even Slater were concerned.

Overall I really did enjoy this book.  I read it in one day and had a very hard time putting it down.  Yes I had some issues with the book but for some reason that did not stop me from enjoying it and wanting to see what happened.  The second half of the book for me was where the real story was.  I loved how the two of them came together for their families.  You could see how they felt about each other and I think that they were good together.  As I said this book was definitely intriguing and something that I did enjoy.  This is my first book by this author and I look forward to reading more from her.
