Review: City Mouse by Amy Lane and Aleksandr Voinov

Our 4 star review

We first met Owen and Malcolm in Country Mouse, where we saw their weekend of passion turn into more, when Malcolm showed up at the train station wanting Owen to stay.  City Mouse starts where they left off, with Owen deciding not to return to the States and instead live with Malcolm and give their relationship a try.

Malcolm is a little bit of a snob who loves his fancy clothes, big apartment and the great neighborhood that he lives in.  When it comes to sexual relationships he always seemed to be the one in control.  He wasn't one for relationships and certainly did not give his heart away.  But with Owen things are different, he fell in love with him unexpectedly and giving up control to Owen some of the time just feels right.  Owen is more laid back than Malcolm.  He is sexy and sweet, has a big heart and has no fear of commitment.  Owen is content with the job he had using his IT skills and doesn't care what neighborhood his place of employment is in.  Malcolm's life seems to be filled with fear.  Fear that he will become fat, fear that he will screw up and lose Owen and fear that if one day things between the two of them do not work out, that Owen will be left with no apartment and a job that doesn't pay enough.  it's really his own way of trying to take care of Owen, but unfortunately it doesn't really come across that way.

The authors take us on a 6 week journey through the beginnings of their relationship.  Being in a relationship is all new to Malcolm and his fear is that he will somehow ruin it.  The materialistic things in life that are important to Malcolm are not as important to Owen. It is Malcolm's job and his fears and insecurities that start to cause some friction between them.  Owen's mother would refer to the beginning of any relationship as the 6 week turning point.  After the sixth week, will their relationship be all that they expected it to be, or will something happen that will cause them to rethink it all?  Will they be able to survive past that sixth week and live a happy life together.  Only time will tell.

I loved the relationship that Owen and Malcom had.  In a way they balanced each other out.  I think Malcolm would consider himself the dominant type and when he first met Owen he considered him to be more the submissive type.  But as we see their relationship continue, you see that the roles that they play in their relationship seem to change with the situation.  Owen isn't always quick to give in to Malcolm and I think that Owen brings out the best in him.  After all Malcolm is always the complete arse that he makes himself out to be.  There are very sweet moments in this book and very hot sex scenes as well.  There is one thing that Malcolm and Owen have that no one can deny, and that is chemistry.

I really enjoyed the journey with these two characters.  Owen's mom was a great addition to the book and I loved the relationship that he had with her.  This was a wonderful, hot and sexy read about two men falling in love unexpectedly and more or less trying to survive that trial period that every new relationship goes through.   I think Amy and Aleksandr did an wonderful job with the writing and their story.  I am torn between a 3.5 and 4 star rating with this book because my only issue with it, is that I wanted more in the end.  I hope the authors have plans to continue their story because I want to see more of them beyond City Mouse.  I gave it a 4 because I really enjoyed the writing style of the book and loved Owen and Malcolm together.   This was an enjoyable book and a must read.  But make sure you read Country Mouse first to see how their relationship started.

I received this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.
