Review: Make Me by Amanda Heath

“Make me, Channing. Make me fall. Push me, shove me, just make sure I get there.” I shout at him, taking a step back. His eyes clash with mine. I read the challenge there, making me take another step back.

He stalks the few steps to me and grabs my arms slamming his forehead down on mine, “I’ll make you.” His lips skim against mine as he continues to speak, “And I’ll be falling right there with you.”

Paisley Vaughn grew up on the wrong side of the tracks. After finding her mother dead from an overdose, Paisley and her baby sister are shipped off to live with her maternal grandparents.

She always knew they were rich, she just didn’t realize how rich they were. Now she’s being forced to go to a prestigious high school. One where the tuition is more money then she’s ever seen.

Thinking these rich kids are going to be snobbish and rude, she’s surprised to find the Vaughn name means she is untouchable. Well unless your name is Channing Southerland.

Paisley has to navigate her new life and all the new people in it. While her mother might have lied about her grandparents, no one is lying about Channing. He’s beautiful, mean, arrogant, and turning her on.

Before long a war is fought, leaving Paisley wondering if she’ll be ruined or made. Though she might just fall irrevocably in love.

4.5 Star Review by Nicole Lorenzo

Living in a trailer with her drug addict mother, Paisley Vaughn’s main concern is to get through her senior year so she can take care of her baby sister properly. When their mother dies of a heroin overdose Paisley is scared to death that the well dressed woman that shows up is from the state department. But to her surprise she is not there to take her sister away from her, the woman is her wealthy grandmother who’s come to take them both to their new life. Paisley suddenly finds herself surrounded by family she didn’t know existed and thrust into a life of wealth she could have only imagined before.

Adjusting to her new life doesn’t exactly come easy for Paisley nor does trusting her new family. When her cousins introduce her to their neighbor and family friend Channing Southerland, Paisley finds they share a mutual dislike for each other immediately. Unfortunately her attraction to Channing is just as strong as her dislike for him. Channing is gorgeous; an Adonis, but he’s also arrogant and bossy and doesn’t want Paisley anywhere near him or his friends.

“From the moment I met you, I wanted nothing to do with you. If you want a war, then I’ll bring it. But don’t think you’re going to get off on bossing me around. I don’t care about your money or your body.”

Attending her new prestigious high school and being surrounded by extreme wealth is like being in another world for Paisley. She tries to adapt to her new life and deal with the drama and secrets surrounding her new family. She does make some friends and attempts to avoid Channing but he is everywhere and the more she tries to convince herself she hates him, the more she seems to want him.

“I wouldn’t be able to handle Channing. He’d be way too much for me. I’m pretty sure he would consume me.”

Finally putting misunderstandings aside Channing and Paisley start to fall for each other and they find themselves in uncharted territory. Channing doesn’t show emotion or do relationships so this is all new for the both of them. But Paisley sees there is much more to Channing than she originally thought; he can be sweet, and loving even though he is hesitant to show it. But Paisley is still unsure if she can trust Channing or her heart.

“From the second I laid eyes on you, Paisley, I didn’t want anyone else. I spent weeks trying to get you out of my head. Don’t you dare back out now.”

Paisley and Channing’s lives are intertwined in more ways than one and when family secrets are revealed they both realize that everything was not as it originally seemed.

Make Me is the first novel in the Make and Break series by Amanda Heath. This is the first novel I have read by this author and I enjoyed it. I loved the love/hate relationship between Paisley and Channing. Channing is very sweet despite his cold and arrogant first impression. Paisley is a strong female character that came from a terrible upbringing and just can’t seem to catch a break. This couple is surrounded by family drama, secrets and lies. There are a lot of secondary characters and the epilogue has you guessing who the second book will be about!
