3.5 star review by Lisa Kane

Rebecca (Becca) meets Luke in the parking lot of a liquor store. His car battery is dead and he needs a jump. She complies and he asks her to dinner. Reluctantly she accepts. She doesn’t know that he is Lucas Masterson, the rock star. What he doesn’t know is Becca lives in a world of pain. Her mother is a drunk, and half catatonic most of the time. She was once the town whore, screwing everyone for her a fix. She works like a dog to pay for her car and keep groceries in their beaten down house.

Becca’s best friend, Jen, wins tickets to a concert at Citizens Bank Park in Philly where they live. She drags Rebecca with her; want to guess who is singing at the concert and who has second row seats? So the cat’s out of the bag and Becca knows the guy she has a date with for dinner the next night is the rock star that thousands of women are lusting after.

The date goes well, so well that Luke decides to spend his week off in Philly getting to know Becca better. She has always had intimacy issues and has never had sex. Luke changes all of that and she is quickly falling for him. But she can’t let down her guard about her mother and how poor they are, and she lets Luke think Jen is her sister and her house is her home. She hates being dishonest, but once he assumes that, she isn’t sure how to tell him the truth.

The week together goes by quickly, too quickly. Luke asks Becca to go to tour with him and she agrees. Unfortunately, his manager and Samantha, one of the other performers who have been trying to get into Luke’s pants, are not happy about Becca. One of the opening acts, Jackson Stone, wants whatever Luke has, so naturally he wants Becca. With all these forces working against them, how can things work?
Surrender to Me is a good read. Being from Philly, I especially enjoyed the parts about the area’s local attractions. I am a sucker for rock star romances. Both Luke and Becca are likeable and share some amazing chemistry. The villains, Samantha and Jackson are nasty enough that they make the reader loathe them and they are quite good at throwing a wrench in the works. The book ends on a cliffy so be prepared-I am anticipating the next one.
