Review: Shelter You by Alice Montalbo-Tribue

She's mine.

That was the first thought that came to my mind when I held my baby in my arms at seventeen. I didn't care that my parents had already promised to give her to a wealthy family. That they were forcing me to give her away.

She was mine.

I ran away from that hospital, from that family, from the only life I knew. I planned to start over with what little money I had, determined to make something of myself despite the odds.

Then Logan Tate came along.

Gorgeous and controlling, he claimed he was trying to help me, and he didn't care that I was just another teenage pregnancy story.

But I don’t trust him. I don't trust anyone. And if Logan knew the real secrets and lies I was keeping inside, he wouldn't dare try to shelter me.

When 17 year old Mia fled the hospital with her newborn daughter she had nothing but her meager savings and no planned destination. She knew the only way she could keep Lily was to flee from her parents and ugly past and stay hidden until her 18th birthday. Deciding on Pennsylvania, Mia finds a small apartment and a job at a daycare center so she can work and have Lily taken care of as well. She’s trying her best but she can’t help but doubt her ability to raise Lily alone.

“I have to believe that a life with me is better for her than any life she could have had without me.”

When Lily gets sick, Mia takes her to the Emergency room and that’s where she meets Officer Tate. Logan Tate is a 24 year old police officer who takes an immediate interest in Mia and Lily. When Mia’s apartment gets burglarized Logan doesn’t feel safe leaving them there so he insists on taking them home with him and he won’t take no for an answer. Mia like’s Logan but she doesn’t trust easily, but fearing Lily’s safety she agrees to temporarily stay with Logan. Being in close proximity to Logan stirs something in Mia she’s not familiar with. She tries to fight her growing attraction to Logan, but his kindness towards her and Lily makes it very hard for her.

“There were no promises made between us, no vows of love or lust, but still there was something there. A sliver of attraction, an invisible pull drawing us together and for now it’s enough.”

The longer Logan and Mia spend time together the more they realize that there is no avoiding the growing attraction between them. They decide to try having a real relationship, but take it slow. It’s then that Logan realizes that Mia was running from more than her parents wanting her to give up Lily. Mia knows she’s in love with Logan, but that scares her. She wonders if Logan will wake up one day and realize that it’s all too much.

“…..you’re here, you’re with me and you and Lily are safe. And when it comes down to it, I want you, I want you both, I want you to be mine.”

Things for Logan and Mia are going great until one day a ghost from Mia’s past shows up at the door and threatens everything that she loves. Not even Logan may be able to protect her and save Mia and Lily from a past they had no control of. Will Logan’s plan to have a happily ever after with Mia and Lily be thrashed by demons from her past?

“You helped me, you saved me, you saved Lily.”

Shelter you is a sweet story about a young girl with a terrible past who flees with her newborn right into the arms of her very own Prince Charming. Mia is so strong. To have endured what she did and then to have the courage to take her daughter and go at such a young age is remarkable. This is what Logan sees when he meets her, and he knows then that he must protect her at all costs. I enjoyed this story but I did feel that everything fell into place a little too quickly and easily for Mia. Their story is heartwarming and although there are some sad moments, they do get their happily ever after.
