Review: Better When He's Bad by Jay Crownover

Welcome to the Point

There’s a difference between a bad boy and a boy who’s bad . . . meet Shane Baxter.

Sexy, dark, and dangerous, Bax isn’t just from the wrong side of the tracks, he is the wrong side of the tracks. A criminal, a thug, and a brawler, he’s the master of bad choices, until one such choice landed him in prison for five years. Now Bax is out and looking for answers, and he doesn’t care what he has to do or who he has to hurt to get them. But there’s a new player in the game, and she’s much too innocent, much too soft…and standing directly in his way.

Dovie Pryce knows all about living a hard life and the tough choices that come with it. She’s always tried to be good, tried to help others, and tried not to let the darkness pull her down. But the streets are fighting back, things have gone from bad to worse, and the only person who can help her is the scariest, sexiest, most complicated ex-con The Point has ever produced.

Bax terrifies her, but it doesn’t take Dovie long to realize that some boys are just better when they’re bad.

4 Star Review by Jen Skewes

We all love to read a book about a bad boy. You know the ones, where the hero has tattoos, is a man whore and doesn't do relationships because he is damaged in some way from his past.  We all love them.  Well Shane Baxter or should I say Bax is definitely a bad boy, but it’s not just his sexy looks, his tatted body or his history with woman that makes him bad.  He is the a real bad boy, the one who will do what it takes to survive.  The man who takes what he wants when he wants it.  Yes Shane Baxter is a thief.  If you have something he wants, watch out because he will take it and that includes your woman.  Better When He’s bad is the story of a bad boy who for the first time opens himself up to a woman and ends up falling in love.

Growing up Bax’s father was not around, it was just him, his brother and his alcoholic mother.  So he did what he needed to do to survive and take care of himself.  Bax has spent the last 5 years in jail and now that he is out he is looking for his best friend Race and is also trying to find out who is responsible for him going to prison.  While he’s looking for Race he meets Dovie who happens to be Race’s sister.  Bax never mentioned that he had a sister but he soon finds out that Race never knew about her either, until recently.

Race is the one person that Dovie can trust in this world and she has no idea what happened to him or where he is. She meets Bax and from what her brother has told her of him, she can trust him.  But Dovie still has her issues and isn’t really sure who to trust.  The one thing that she does know is that she needs Bax to help her find Race.  Bax knows that Dovie following him around is trouble but I think he also knows that he needs to protect her and keep her close to him.  Whoever Race is hiding from may be after Bax and Dovie as well.

Bax has spent the last five years in prison.  But before that he was a typical man whore.  Was not one to get attached or do relationships.  He lived a tough life and needed to survive in this dark world.  But with Dovie feelings start to surface that Bax never felt before.  She is unlike any other woman that he as been with.  He wants her even if being with her is wrong. He cannot control himself hen he is near her.  But the issues for these two is being together puts Dovie more at danger.  She does not fit in his world.  She is tough but yet sweet and innocent at the same time.  So how can these two make this work?

I loved the relationship between Bax and Dovie.  Their story was one that had plenty of ups and downs.  Falling in love with a bad boy like Bax is sure to have plenty of risks and put your life in danger.  But Dovie couldn’t help her feelings.  Their story was one that was filled with heartache.  You felt the connection between them but you also felt those moments of heartache between them.  This book is somewhat dark depending on what you are used to.  Bax lives in a world filled crime, his life always in danger and that is where the darkness comes in.  But this is also not some sweet love story filled with roses either.  Bax is sexy, hot and dangerous. But with Dovie he is different.  He opens himself up to her.  There is Bax, the bad boy thief who everyone knows and fears.  And then there is Shane the guy with a sweet side, the guy who cares.  Most people know Bax, but Dovie is the one who has the pleasure of seeing both sides of Shane Bater.

Overall I really enjoyed this book.  I loved the connection between Bax and Dovie, loved the flirting and they ere certainly hot together.  Looking forward to the next one in this series.
