Moonbeam hearts and sunshine smiles
Sometimes it's difficult to write a review without spoiling a major story line. This is going to be one of those reviews that doesn't go into a lot of specifics. But the lack of details is no indication of the depth of my feelings for this book. It touched my reader's soul. I highlighted so many passages my kindle is like a rainbow full of different shades. It is unique and different and beautiful beyond compare.
Rune Erik Kristiansen is five years old when his family moves from Oslo, Norway to Georgia. The culture shock is overwhelming. He speaks English but everyone sounds different and nothing feels the same. But he is about to meet the one girl who will forever affect his future. Poppy Litchfield was five years old when she first laid eyes on her new neighbor Rune. He doesn't talk the same way she does but she figures she will have someone to go on her adventures with her.
"I don't normally bring people with me on my journeys, but you're a Viking, and we all know that Vikings grow big and strong, and they are really really good with adventures and exploring."
Her mamaw goes on her little adventures with her. Her grand mom is her best friend. But she is very sick and all of Poppy's relatives are at her house crying. Her grand mom talks to her and gives her a gift.
I saw she was holding a big mason jar filled to the top with lots and lots of pink paper hearts.
"This jar is for your boy-kisses, Poppy. All the kisses that make your heart almost burst, the ones that are the most special, the ones you want to remember when you're old and gray like me. The ones that will make you smile when you remember them in your mind."
As the years went on the friendship between Poppy and Rune only got stronger.
"Poppy and Rune, best friends for infinity."
But as close as they are, some things happen and they grow apart. Not by choice, but just because.
When they are reunited again, Rune is not the same sweet person. He is hardened and angry. So angry at his parents, at Poppy, at his life. Poppy struggles with the changes.
I left Blossom Grove without a word. When I came back to this school-without being on Rune's arm, I became the girl I always should have been-invisible to the popular crowd. The weird girl who wore bows in her hair and played the cello.
There are parts of this story where I cried, I mean full out ugly cried. But the story is worth the tears.
"I'm that girl, Rune. The one who waits out the storm simply to catch a glimpse of a rainbow. Why be miserable when you can be happy? It's an obvious choice to me."
I'm going to stop talking in specifics at this point. To do otherwise would be to give away too much of the plot. Suffice it to say that this is a unique story about two kids who grow into a beautiful couple whose love is not defined by their age. Theirs is not puppy love; nor is it the kind that will fade with age. There are real pearls of wisdom in this story. There is sage advice and words to soothe the soul about loss and love. It is told with humor and witty banter and Poppy is what I like to think of as an "old soul". She is pure and is wise beyond her years.
Live hard, love harder. Chase dreams, seek adventures...capture moments.
Live Beautifully.
She is selfless in that she wants the best for Rune. Rune is deeply devoted to Poppy. He will put himself and his needs second to her in every instance he is tested. Theirs is a beautiful story and although there are several twists that color outside the conventional love story lines, at the heart of this story is an undying love for each other.
