Review for VAIN by Fisher Amelie

VAIN by

Summary:
If you’re looking for a story about a good, humble girl, who’s been hurt by someone she thought she could trust, only to find out she’s not as vulnerable as she thought she was and discovers an empowering side of herself that falls in love with the guy who helps her find that self, blah, blah, blah...then you’re gonna’ hate my story.

Because mine is not the story you read every time you bend back the cover of the latest trend novel. It’s not the “I can do anything, now that I’ve found you/I’m misunderstood but one day you’ll find me irresistible because of it” tale. Why? Because, if I was being honest with you, I’m a complete witch. There’s nothing redeeming about me. I’m a friend using, drug abusing, sex addict from Los Angeles. I’m every girlfriend’s worst nightmare and every boy’s fantasy.

I’m Sophie Price...And this is the story about how I went from the world’s most envied girl to the girl no one wanted around and why I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.

 Our 4.5 star review

“I was ready. Ready to defend her. Ready to save others, if I could. Ready to die for them….especially Ian.” ~ Sophie Price

Not everything can be champagne wishes and caviar dreams, even when your father happens to be one of the richest men in the country. Although being one of the wealthiest does have its benefits.  Sophia Price is extremely rich, smart, beautiful and vain. She is also at the top of her social chain and in control. She is able to take what she wants, when she wants, without asking no matter who it ends up hurting. Her parents barely acknowledge her existence. Due to their apathy, her father’s lawyer, Prembrook, has played more of the parent to her, than her own. Her father only holds a conversation with her to let her know of his disappointment in her or to ask her to entertain a potential client’s son.
After having been found guilty of possession of cocaine for the second time, Sophie is sentenced to 6 months volunteering at an Orphanage in Uganda, Africa. Nothing in her past had prepared Sophie for the reality of life at the orphanage Masego and she definitely wasn’t prepared for Ian Aberdeen. Being at the oprhanage started off as a cruel punishment for Sophie and ended up changing her in more ways than one.
Ian Aberdeen has been with the orphanage for the past several years and wears many hats. He is extremely smart and utterly handsome and he is not impressed with Sophie Price in the least. He finds himself in the position of training her. He wants nothing to do with her- he makes sure she knows it. He knows about girls like her; vain, beautiful, spoiled, the ones who don’t care for anyone or anything but themselves. She is the same as all the rest or is she?

“You have no idea what you do to me. I’ve felt things for you these past few months that don’t seem healthy. I’ve wanted you so desperately I’m afraid it may not be natural. You consume my thoughts, Sophie”  ~ Ian Aberdeen

After a few months of volunteering, Sophie is in awe of the children; their strength and their spirit regardless of the horrible things they have endured.

“They are funny little representatives of simplicity, of awareness. No one is more aware of themselves as these children are. They have nothing, have no one but us, have seemingly no reason to be hopeful…yet they are. They choose to be happy even though the obviously easier choice would be to be frightened or sad and they have real reason to be those things as well. But they have life and faith and hope and love and they choose those things. Their innocence is addicting, their hope is catching and I’m happy to be surrounded by them” ~ Sophia Price

The difficult journey that Sophie travels is awe inspiring.  To watch her transform from a self-centered, selfish and vain person to someone who would willingly give the clothes off her back and perhaps even die for these people, is remarkable. Seeing her inner struggle and not only witnessing but experiencing the violence and the pain, Sophie realizes there is more to life than looks, partying and money. She begins to understand and make sense of these things.  Sophie learns what true friendships are all about, understands what it means to follow your heart. She understands that she is willing to dedicate herself for something she truly believes in and she learns the meaning of true love.

This is a story that will stay with you long after you have finished reading it. The characters and the issues that Vain raises will impress and will not easily be forgotten.
I am in awe at how Ms.Fisher was able to turn the ugly events in Uganda, into a beautiful and inspiring love story, even though it is surrounded with so much violence.
This is a wonderful and well written story. An absolute must read!
