Review: Love and Skate by Lila Felix

Our 4 star review

This was my first book by Lila Felix and I loved it. This was such a wonderful, sweet and heart warming read. It tells the story of two college students who have both been burned in their past by their exes and manage to find love again.

Nellie has always lived her life to please everyone else. She dressed and acted the way her family, friends and boyfriend expected her to act.   she tried more to please her parents then she did herself.  After being betrayed by her boyfriend and best friend Nellie decides to move on and become the person that she truly is, rather than who she is expected to be
Nellie is now in college, working at a book store and competes on a roller derby team. She is her own person and for the first time in her life true to herself. She has piercings, tattoos, and is always changing her crazy hair colorand doesn't care what her mother or anyone else has to say about it.  She is no longer a robot living her life the way everyone expects her to live it. This is what I love about Nellie. She was betrayed by two people she trusted, but she took that betrayal and turned it into something positive. She is a lot stronger for it as well

Owen has his own issues with trust as well. He also betrayed by his girlfriend and best friend. But Owen chose to handle it in a different way. He became destructive, drinking, skipping school and causing his parents relationship to suffer, which resulted in a lot of guilt on his part. He has since turned his life around and is now enrolled in college and working on his career as a marine biologist. I loved Owen. He was just an all around amazing guy who wanted nothing more then to love and make Nellie happy.

"This was making sure that if she was cold, I would warm her. If she was in pain, I would ease her. And if her heart ached, I would mend her. Somehow the things that I could do for her were just things that she needed. she could've found them anywhere but she chose to seek them in me" -Owen

Nellie and Owen meet in school. When he first see her, blue hair and all he cannot seem to get her out of his mind. The attraction between the two of them was instant. They were so adorably cute together. I loved Owen, he is one of those characters that you just fall in love with. They find themselves falling for each other quickly and I think that scares the two of them but they don't deny their love or their attraction. But what happens when Owen's past comes back to haunt him. Owen hasn't gotten past the hurt from his ex and his former best friend. He loves Nellie and trusts her but he can't seem to get past the hurt and betrayal from his past, which cause problems in his relationship with Nellie. Is their love strong enough to survive and can Owen let go of the past?

This story is told in alternating POV, which I love in a book. I love seeing both sides and Lila Felix did an amazing job. I loved the texts between Nellie and Owen. I loved how patient and loving Owen was with her. He loved her and just wanted to be with her any way he could and make her happy. I loved how strong Nellie was. I honestly can say she is one of my favorite heroines. The author did such a wonderful job with the secondary characters, especially Owen's family. they welcomed Nellie into their family with open arms and treated her with more love and respect than her own family did. This book made me smile, laugh and even cry a little. But overall it was a wonderful story of two people who were betrayed in their past, finding love again. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series and I am looking forward to reading more from this author.
