Callie's father left her his bar, The Odyssey in the heart of the French Quarter. Her life up until now has been in Denver, managing her boyfriend, Kevin's bar. But she's been in New Orleans trying to tie up the loose ends. Things are taking longing than she wants. When she calls Kevin to let him know she's going to be held up, he tells her it was time to end things anyway. He wants things to go in a different direction for the bar and things between them (in spite of them being together for two years) weren't going anywhere and she's not really who he wants. Nice call this is turning out to be. So it looks like she will be staying in New Orleans and she figures she's pretty good at turning things, has a few bucks to invest and she might as well settle in here. She can stay with Adam, her best friend. He's been running the bar for her dad for years now. This will be a good thing.
"I care about you, Cal. We had a great time together, and you did a good job in my club, but you're just not my forever girl, and it's time to move on."
Declan has been playing at The Odyssey for years. He's anxious to see all the changes that have been going on in the 3 months that the bar's been closed. To be honest he wants to get another glimpse of Callie, they had a run in when she first got to town and the feisty beauty has piqued his interest. He's a player and he appreciates a beautiful woman when he sees one.
All I have to do is take one look at Callie and know that there's a God. And I hope to make her call out his name in thanks in the very near future.
He loves the changes she has made and the bar is completely transformed. Business is booming and it looks like Callie has a hit on her hands. She and Declan both felt the connection between them. Neither is looking for anything serious; and it's fun hanging out. Doesn't hurt that the sex is pretty damn hot!
"When you're with me?"
"I just feel better. I feel more." His eyes widen and then darken.
"Emotions are brighter, and that's the only way I can describe it."
Slowly things become more about the relationship than the sex and they both find themselves falling for the other. But of course, this is a romance book and things can't always go smoothly. Declan has some news thrown at him and he abruptly pulls back from Callie. To make matters worse, she sees something, misinterprets it and things really get out of hand. And for the triple play, Kevin makes a surprise visit. We always want what we don't have, right?
Declan gets an earful from his sisters, who have come to love CAllie, but he's a guy and they seem to mess up and he's no exception to that rule. When the truth comes out, I have to admit that I was really confused by Declan's explanations. They seemed a little lame to me, and I didn't get why he was so thrown by things, but a man's motivations are usually a mystery so go figure...
All the usual suspects from the Boudeaux series are in this one (can't wait for Savannah and Ben's story..hope that one is coming soon!) This one has a bonus-there's a Seattle football plotline and we get to revisit with the Montgomerys! Score!
"I wasn't expecting you, Declan Boudreaux," I begin and grin at him. "You were not a part of any of my plans, but you were the best surprise I've ever been given, the piece of my puzzle that I didn't know was missing."
