Blog tour: Restore Me by J.L. Mac

Synopsis

Navigating the world alone is all Josephine Geroux has ever known. Life altering tragedy struck early on for her. She endured an admirable struggle through her youth and learned the hard way how to adapt and survive. She managed to arrive at adulthood in one piece in spite of it all.

After such chaos, maintaining a life free of complications is a priority for her.
Everything changed when a man with amber eyes came through her door and claimed her heart. She fell hard in more ways than one. The pull between Jo and Damon seemed like fate bringing things full circle.

With another devastating loss looming, Jo fights to hold on to the very thing that brought her to her knees. She finds herself torn between a promising future and clinging to a devastating past.
But that’s not the most worrisome problem on her hands.

She must convince more than just herself to let the past stay in the past, where it belongs, but on her journey to find closure and resolution, she does the exact opposite. An old wound caused by a heinous act becomes exposed for what it is. The truth is catastrophic and Jo is helpless, watching as the ruins of her fragile world endure more turmoil.

Can something conceived from tragedy and malice end well? Can something so completely poisoned conquer adversity? Jo is left to make a decision; accept the circumstances she finds herself in or fight with unwavering ferocity to restore what has been damaged.

4 star review

Note:  This is a sequel to “Wreck Me.”  If you have not read “Wreck Me” please do not read any further as the review will contain spoilers that happened in the first book.

At the conclusion of “Wreck Me” we were left with Damon being rushed into the back of the ambulance following an overdose.   “Restore Me” begins one week following the incident.

“I’m left standing here across from my love, except he’s not my love anymore…it’s not the Damon I love.”

Our hot alpha-male Damon from “Wreck Me” is not the same.  He is a shell of man, acting in robotic mode, no expression to his eyes, no voice to speak, and no acknowledgement of Jo’s love.

“The idea of never having him back the way he was is frightening.”

Damon has been carrying around the guilt of the car accident that claimed Jo’s parents while his father was driving drunk.  Damon was physically and verbally abused by his father and his mother abandoned him as a baby.  In the prologue to “Restore Me” we are given Damon’s POV of the accident.  It will grab at your heart strings and pull them tight.

“Even though he’s a terrible, mean drunken asshole, I still have a strange desire to please him…He’ll never love me, but I try.  I may always try.”

Damon has given up on trying.  He’s no longer the man that Jo knew, no longer the man in control and definitely no longer the passionate lover.  Jo works hard to bring him back to her.  Not only is Jo suffering the loss of the man she loved, she also has the grief to work through from losing her Captain, the man she called family for 7 years.  Jo has always been strong, bringing herself off the streets and making a life for herself.  Jo continues to be strong for Damon and never leaves his side.  Damon’s sanctuary is his office and Jo catches him several times standing before a locked file cabinet.  What is behind the locked doors is what Jo is able to use to finally get into Damon’s soul.

Damon shows many sides of himself throughout the book:  robot Damon, zombie Damon, jealous Damon, possessive Damon, and finally loving Damon.

“My heart resides with you.”

We continue to see Grams in the story.  We are also introduced to Handy Andy, the good-looking maintenance man at Grams’ retirement home.  There is a problem involving a family member at the end of the book that I believe will lead us into the magnitude of the third book.  This book was short and touches very little on some of our questions we had or continue to have while reading about Damon.   Jo makes a decision that can change everything for Damon, and it might not be in his best interest or in the interest of the person involved, but she believes this is what Damon needs to move forward in his life. Damon still has a lot of issues to work through, and he may very well have a huge surprise awaiting for him in book 3.
