About AS DUST DANCES:
Once upon a time Skylar Finch was the lead singer of a hugely successful American pop-rock band. But fame made her miserable. When years of living a lie suddenly ended in tragedy, Skylar fell off the map.
Eighteen months later she’s sleeping in a tent in a cemetery in Glasgow, making just enough money to eat by busking on the streets. She manages to avoid recognition, but not the attention of one of Glasgow’s ambitious A&R executives.
Killian O’Dea works at Skyscraper Records, Scotland’s most successful record label. Raised by his uncle and owner of the label, Killian’s upbringing would have been devoid of affection entirely if it wasn’t for his loving sister. Killian is unflinchingly determined to bring the label more success than ever, and the young homeless woman who busks on Buchanan Street is going to help him do that. Her music speaks to him in a way he refuses to over-analyze. All he knows is that if it can touch his dark soul, it’ll set everyone else’s alight.
Skylar makes it clear that she doesn’t want to sign with him. But when she experiences the dangerous reality of a woman sleeping rough, Skylar has no one else but Killian to turn to. An undeniable connection forms between them. But Skylar doesn’t want the career Killian is trying to forge for her, and when her past comes back to haunt her Killian will be faced with a decision that could ruin him. He must either free Skylar from his selfish machinations and destroy everything he’s ever worked for, or lose a woman who has come to mean more to him than he ever thought possible…
Review by Lisa Kane
Skylar Finch is homeless. She spends her days busking in Glasgow. She hopes the generosity of strangers will buy the things she needs to survive another day.
I was busking so I could buy a meal for the night. And if it was a particularly good day, money to get into the swimming center so I could use one of their showers and a hair dryer.
She travels alone, with the occasional company of a heroin addict, Ham and his girlfriend Mandy. They urge her to join them, or at least hang with other homeless women. The streets are mean and she is alone. But she chooses her own company.
She sees him when she sings. He's checked her out before but now he approaches. He wants to talk to her, he tells her that he knows she can sing. She can't take the chance that he may see through her and she flees. But this won't be the last time he tries to get her to talk to him.
After turning down his offers to talk, she at least has his contact number. The cemetery has always provided a safe place to sleep, but two thugs put an end to all that. Hurt, violated and broke she has no choice but to call him- Killian O'Dea. Turns out he knows who she is, and what all she left behind. He wants her to take back her life. A life that shatter her to the point that she left it behind, choosing to live on the streets rather than the life of a rich, famous musician.
Killian is no stranger to grief himself. They have more in common then they think.
"The helicopter crashed. It was the last time we saw them."
But Killian is a suit, a corporate rep. Can she trust him?
He had no intention of protecting me from this. Of putting me first.
As Dust Dances tells the story of a young woman, whose life was so shattered that she couldn't put it back together. So she left it all behind. Killian is a man determined to prove to his uncle that he is worthy of running the music label, but at what price?
Can Skylar find her way back?
I wanted to be stronger.
I wanted to be braver.
And most of all, I wanted to own myself again.
I was done doing it their way.
There are more than a few times when I felt this girl's grief straight to my soul. Her emotions run so deep and she is so low at moments in her life.
"Because I promised someone that the next time I committed to love that the man I chose would be a man who loved me enough to put my happiness before his own."
This girl...finding her own strength...kills me.
"I'll never love anyone the way I love you."
