BLURB

When life took an unexpected turn, I decided to get out of New York for a while. What better place to go than the idyllic small town my father spoke about so fondly when I was growing up? Laurel Lake held the title America’s Friendliest Town for seventeen years running, and friendly was just what I needed right now.

Unfortunately, friendly wasn’t the welcome I got when I arrived.

Instead, I got Fox Cassidy. My tall, dark, and burly neighbor, who grunted at me instead of saying hello.

Okay, so I might’ve had his mailbox in my hands the first time we met. And it might’ve been a little crushed after removing it from under my tire. And I might’ve needed his help breaking into the place I was staying in after the key broke off in the lock. But still…he didn’t have to be so grumpy.

As time went on though, I started to notice things about Fox other than his glares. Like how he watched me when he thought I wasn’t looking, or how fire ignited in his eyes whenever we bickered. Though I was in Laurel Lake to escape my problems, not create new ones. And getting involved with a man like Fox screamed trouble, even if he was gorgeous and unlike any man I’d ever met.

But alas, problem seemed to be my middle name this year. So why not have some fun while I was here for the summer? It seemed like a good plan. At least until it was time to go home…

They say what happens at the lake, stays at the lake. But it’s not so easy to walk away when what stays behind…is your heart.

Lisa Kane's 4 Star Review

I enjoy a small town romance and this one fit my needs. Josie Preston is ready for a change. She's gone through a hard time and wants to just get away from everything. Years ago, her father died and left her a house in Laurel Lake. She's had a renter living there for years, but she is no longer there. Little did Josie know, the former renter was a hoarder and the house is falling apart. She has her work cut out for her, but that's okay with her. She's looking to do a lot of work herself. (with lots of help from Youtube) Josie feels comfortable in this little town, she's had a certain connection to many residents for years. (no spoilers here!)

What she's not expecting to find is a grumpy neighbor. Fox Cassidy is like an enigma-gorgeous to look at but prickly as all hell. To give the devil his due, Josie ran over his mail box and ruined it. He doesn't suffer fools lightly and he's not sure what to make of this woman. He doubts she's going to be able to fix up that eye sore, not without a contractor, but she's adamant that she can make a go of it.

Both Josie and Fox are wary of romance-both were burnt in the past and neither is chumping at the bit to give romance a chance any time soon. There are lots of funny scenes in this story, any time there is a house falling apart and wayward animals, there is sure to be more than a few laughs.

Both their pasts seem to collide with their presents, can they overcome those challenges? There's a little bit of drama, some mild angst between the two. To be honest, I wish there had been more, nothing keeps me interested more than a few stomach drops and secrets revealed. This one didn't have too many moments that made my stomach do somersaults.

All in all, What Happens at the Lake is an easy read, likeable with good characters who deserve to find their happily ever afters.
