Review: Thirty-Five and Single by Terri E. Laine

What can go wrong when you’re getting divorced from your high school sweetheart, it's your thirty-fifth birthday and you have too much to drink?

Throw in the gorgeous neighbor who comes to the rescue when you can't seem to open your apartment door after all the alcohol and end up taking a drunken slip and slid across the floor.

Then you look up into his gorgeous face and forget all the reasons why it’s a bad idea to hook-up with said twenty-something neighbor. In fact, it’s a fan-freaking-tastic idea.

Now let the games begin because this is Olivia's life: - interfering sisters, the ex, co-workers… and Joel, her way too sexy, too young, but oh so hot neighbor.

Wanting to explore single life, Olivia fights her growing connection with Joel. Only he’s is determined to prove to her that age is just a number and she’s is his number one.

4.5 Stars
Review by Jen Skewes

I loved this book. Maybe it’s because I absolutely loved Joel!   Ut it was also the story and the fact that there is an age gap between the two main characters and that is one of my favorite troupes to read.

Olivia is a 35-year-old woman who had recently caught her husband cheating, left ad is trying to start her new life as a single woman.  It’s not as easy as one would think.  For one, when you have nee with the same man as long as she has, dating becomes completely foreign, as does finding an actual date.  Her sexy and much younger new neighbor Joel has become a good friend to her it he past year.  But he has made it no secret that he wants her and wants more than a friendship. One drunk night leads to a hot and sexy night with Joel.  But when morning comes she knows that they could never be.  She is too hung up on the age difference and everything that she cannot give him.  But Joel is not about to give up.  He is determined to show her just how much they belong together.  Can Olivia open up to the idea of actually dating Joel?

I loved the two of them together and Joel was such a fantastic hero.  He is not just a sexy tattoo artist, he is genuine, caring, sweet and he knows what he wants.  Olivia I loved but at times became so frustrated with her.  She has been through a rough time, and with her ex still lurking around, it isn’t easier on her.  But I could tell and feel what her and Joel had, and I was rooting for them all the way.

There is drama and angst and moments where I was not sure where this story would go.   There are a few twists in there that may surprise you and also make the story even more interesting.  I loved watching the back and forth between Joel and Olivia.  There are moments where the author makes you wait for what comes next.  Reading Joel’s POV only for that chapter to end in a way that leaves you hanging just a bit, then moving on to Olivia and not knowing what happened next with Joel. Well played Ms. Laine!!!  Kept me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happens next.  I adored the characters and loved the story.  I am hoping that Joel’s siblings get their own story, or perhaps Olivia’s sisters as well.

Book Blurb:

He’s a hockey star with a headboard full of notches. She’s a shy NHL concession worker at who’s never been kissed.
Lindy
They don’t call me Belinda Boring for nothing. It’s my name, after all. And for a 23-year-old with plain brown hair who still lives at home and gets tongue tied over nothing, it’s a fitting one. I’m not even one of those quiet girls with a hidden talent, unless making a mean order of nachos at the NHL arena I work at counts. My life consists of working, reading and harboring a secret crush on a hockey player who doesn’t know I exist. At least, until we accidentally meet and become unlikely friends.
Victor
I’m living the dream. A poor kid who worked his way into the NHL, I’ll never forget where I came from, though I try to. My past follows me, a nagging reminder that I’ll never be what everyone thinks I am. As the threat of my secret being exposed looms closer, my game slips, leaving me in danger of being cut from my team--the only family I have. I’m losing my hold on everything when a new friend helps me find hope. She’s nothing like the women I’m used to, but by the time I figure out that’s exactly why she’s right for me, I’ve lost my chance with her. Somehow, I have to convince a woman who thinks she’s invisible that she’s the only one I see.

Review by Jen Skewes

Victor is the third book in the Chicago Blaze series.  I could not wait for his book.  Unfortunately for me it was missing something.  I enjoyed it but I just didn’t love it.

Lindy works at the arena that the Blaze play at.  She is a concession girl who is a big hockey fan and even bigger fan of Victor Lane. She even had a big poster of him in her room, up until about 3 years ago.  She knows that her crush on him will never go anywhere.  In her eyes he can have any woman he wants and there is no way that he would go for her.   When she is on a break one night at work, she sneaks into the arena for a few minutes.  She never expected to see Victor practicing by himself on the ice.  She hopes that he won’t see her, but no such luck. What came net she never in a million years expected.  Their little conversation turned into a friendship. Yes, a friendship with Victor Lane. What could be better than that? Dating him of course.

Victor has been having his own issues, both on and off the ice.  Meeting Lindy that night was like a breath of fresh air.  He needs a friend like her in his life, and it doesn’t hurt that she’s beautiful. But right now, all he can offer her is a friendship.  When he realizes that he wants more, will it be too late?

I enjoyed this book but at the same time it was missing something.  I felt like it all just seemed so easy. There was not much drama or angst, and part of the book just didn’t make sense to me as to why it happened. /I loved the characters, Lindy and Victor was very cute together and I love her gather and his friends and how protective they were of her.  But it still fell a little flat for me.

Review by Jen Skewes

I have read may books by Ms. Grayson and loved them all.  But this one!!  Oh My God, I think this may just be my favorite books of hers.  It is a single dad, best friend’s sister romance which I love, especially the single dad part.  Ms. Grayson never seems to disappoint.  She has the ability to write amazing characters, and makes you feel like you are a part of their lives, feeling everything with them.  And Wait For Me was no different.  Grayson and Nora are two characters that you fall in love with from the moment you meet them, but I think that Grayson’s three adorable children stole the show!!!

Nora is a celebrity whose life seems to be getting a little out of control lately.  After she finds her boyfriend cheating, she reacts in a way that is so unlike her.  She needs a break and the perfect place to do that is to go stay with her brother and sister in law for a little while.  She is only there for the summer, just to relax, take a breath ad figure out what comes next for her.  When she meets her brother’ best friend, Grayson, she soon finds out that he has completely derailed her plans.  Because meeting a guy was not on her agenda.  And falling in love was nowhere on her radar at all.  But Grayson and his three children have completely captured her heart. And it is so easy to see why.

Grayson has had a tough couple of years.  His wife left and he is raising his kids on his own. He gets help from friends and his brother but running a business and raising three kids by yourself is hard work. He doesn’t have time for a love life and has no plans of falling in love or dating.  Until he meets her!!  From the moment he met Nora he was instantly attracted and could not stop thinking of her. He knows that her life is back in LA and that she is only here for the Summer, but that does not stop him from wanting her.  She’s this beautiful and amazing woman who is so caring, fun to hang out with and most importantly she loves his kids.  She doesn’t plan on staying, but could meeting Grayson be a game changer?

I loved this book so much. It is one of those books that from the moment you start reading you do not want to put down.  The day after I finished reading it, I was excited to continue reading only to remember that it was over.  So, I guess you can say I had a huge book hangover.

What made this book so good was honestly the characters.  The story line was perfect and the words were flawlessly written.  But for me it’s the characters that really got me.  Grayson is this amazing father who loves his children, but he deserves to find someone to love and will love him back.  He is kind, sweet, fun and of course sext.  Honestly who does not love a hot single dad?

Nora is this famous musician, but I think there is also this vulnerability to her as well.  She is not your stereo typical celebrity.  She cares about her family and honestly seeing how she got in the business and grew up, in a ways made me really feel for her.  This life is all she has known.  And seeing her with Greyson and how well they connected, how happy she was, just melted my heart.  And the bond that she formed with his children was everything.

I cannot say enough good things about this book.  It was written perfectly.  The right amount of drama and angst, two characters who had so much chemistry and a deep connection that was felt every time they were together.  Throw in three adorable children and you have the perfect and beautiful love story!!!  A Must read!!

Excerpt:
What is all of this?” she asks, flipping through the pages of my chicken scratch.

“Ideas from Marnie.”

“Who’s Marnie?”

“The manager I spoke with. Keep up, Jessa.”

“Sorry. Tell me about her.”

“There isn’t much to tell. She was nice. We talked about what went wrong with Becky, where my career has been, and the direction I want to take it. And get this, she outlined a plan for making it happen. We video conferenced for almost three hours, and I’m really impressed with her.”

“So, what happens now?”

“I told her I’m not ready to go back to LA, and she agreed. I’m going to spend the summer working on some of my own songs for the next album. She’s going to talk with the music execs and make sure they’re on the same page as us.”

“And if they’re not?”

“Then we’ll go somewhere else. They aren’t the only label in town. Anyway, Marnie thinks it’s a good idea to lay low after what happened with Todd—let the media interest die down while she works on putting our plan in motion, and when I go to Todd’s premiere, Marnie and I will meet in person.”

“You still have to go to Todd’s premiere?”

I groan and drop onto the bed beside Jessa. “Unfortunately.”

“That sucks.”

“It is what it is. I shouldn’t have bashed the hell out of his Porsche or stolen his BMW, although it felt great. Lesson learned. Next time I’ll beat up the guy, not the car.”

“Let’s hope there isn’t a next time. I thought your brother was going to lose his mind when you called and told us what happened. He was ready to hop a plane and hunt Todd down.”

I smile at the thought. Nick isn’t a fighter, but I know he’d go head to head if it meant protecting Jessa or me. “Thank you again for letting me crash here.”

“Stop thanking us. You’re family. This is your home too.”

I rest my hand on hers and squeeze it gently. “Love you, Jessa.”

“I hate to break up the chick fest,” Nick says, appearing in the doorway, “but I’m starving.”

“What are you doing home from work?” I ask.

“Didn’t you hear me? I’m starving. I was hoping one of you would make me lunch.”

I give Jessa a nudge. “He’s your husband.”

Nick holds out his hand and pulls Jessa into his arms. The way they look at each other, with stars in their eyes, is absolutely adorable, and also a little disgusting.

They kiss, and Jessa melts. I want what they have.

When Nick deepens the kiss, I throw a pillow at their heads.

“Can you take that into another room, please?”

The two lovebirds laugh and stumble out, but the giggling doesn’t stop. I hear another door shut and then a thump, followed by a moan. I cover my ears and flop back on the bed.

This is going to be a long summer.

Review: Whatever Happens by Micalea Smeltzer

Violet Page is having a rough time. This former popular girl is lost. Her parents uproot everything after her younger sister’s suicide, moving states away to escape the lingering pain of loss. She doesn’t fit in anywhere, but finds herself strangely drawn to the boy she watches view the world through a telescope.

Finnley Crawford isn’t your typical boy next door. Being autistic has always set him apart from kids his age. None of them quite knows how to approach him or interact, leaving him only one friend in the form of his support dog. His lack of friendships lead him to a unique love of space and aspirations of one day reaching the stars. For in the stars, he sees a peace and beauty he can’t find on Earth.

The more time these two seemingly opposite teenagers spend together, the more they learn it isn’t what’s on the outside that counts. So much can be found on the inside if you only care to look.

4.5 Stars
Review by Jen Skewes

Whatever Happens is a beautifully written story about love, friendship and so much more.  It is a friendship between two young adults who are opposites n a lot of ways, but yet alike at the same time.  Life isn’t always about what is on the outside, it’s the inside that also counts.  And Finn and Violet learn that as their friendship begins and starts to blossom into more.

Violet Page has been struggling lately.  After her little sister’s suicide, her parents pick up and move, hoping to escape the pain that their loss has left.  Violet was the popular girl in school, a cheerleader who had a lot of friends. But after her sister’s death, things changed, and it seems that so did her friends.  Violet does not want to be that girl any more.  Maybe it’s because right now she is just going through the motions, or after losing her sister she really sees what her sister was going through, the pain that she lived with.  But then she meets Finn and he changes so much for her.

Finn is the boy next door, who does not have friends.  When he walks down the hallways, he is the kid that other student make fun of, think is weird.  But Violet befriends him and sees what an amazing person he is.  He’s cute, and fun and she loves hanging out with him.  As time goes on she starts feeling a little more than friendship, but s afraid to cross that line.  Finn is different, being autistic, he sees things differently than other people. Violet is not sure what to do with her feelings or how Finn feels.  She just knows that she is falling for the boy next door and she is not sure what comes next!!

I love this book.  It deals with a topic that I don’t think enough people write about.  It is not something that authors approach as a subject for a book, at least not that I have seen.  Micalea handled it perfectly and in such a beautiful way.  I loved the friendship between Finn and Violet.  I loved their connection and how well they got along and understood each other.  You could see and feel how much they meant to each other and how they helped each other emotionally.   It was so beautiful to watch their friendship start and turn into so much more.  I think my only issue was that the beginning was a little slow and I wanted a little more background story where Finn was concerned, but otherwise I loved it.  A wonderful job by Ms. Smeltzer.

Gage Ryan was a notorious heartbreaker, on screen and off. A confirmed bachelor, this world-famous actor dashed the hopes of millions of adoring fans when he rejected marriage and commitment: no wedding bells, no baby carriages.
He'd never had cause to consider the alternative, but that all changed the night he met rising star, Morgan Kelly. Too bad her first impression of him was less than favorable.
Although their attraction was instant and mutual, Morgan wasn't interested. Hollywood heartthrobs were trouble. Especially Gage, a man used to women who would do anything for his attention.
Not happening.

Ella’s favorite things are music, movies, traveling, The Foo Fighters and, of course, reading. This isn’t a surprise considering the fact that her mom is USA Today Bestselling Author Suzanne Halliday.

Excerpt

When I meet Joel
Matthews, I’m in an unexpected place in life.
Divorceville.
I mean who expects
that after fourteen years of marriage to your high school sweetheart.
Not me.
It hits me while
celebrating my birthday with my sisters that I’m thirty-five and single.
Shouldn’t I finally date someone other than my ex?
I totally deserve
that, right?
After way too many
lemon drop shots, I’m tricked into trying on my younger sister considerate gift
as she put it. Did I mention it’s a gag gift? A “my milkshakes bring all the
boys to my yard” t-shirt and velour sweatpants with “Sin-a-Buns” written across
my bottom which she finds all too hilarious.
That’s how Joel
finds me, too smashed to open my apartment door and when I do, I take a drunken
slip and slid across the floor with my Sin-A -Buns on full
display.
Joel doesn’t seem to
notice. Then again, I swear I heard a chuckle. But no matter, he’s right there
to make sure I’m okay as any knight in shiny armor should do.
Okay, where did that
come from? Clearly, I’m not in my right frame of mine.
When I look up into
his gorgeous face, I forget all the reasons why it’s a bad idea to hook-up with
my twenty-something neighbor. In fact, it’s a fan-freaking-tastic idea.
(Ride that pony,
girl
? Did I really just
think that?)
Until I wake in the
morning with a delicious ache between my legs and a pounding headache. I’m
mature enough not to regret it, but adult enough to realize it can’t happen
again.
First—I’m too old
for him. He’s in his twenties for goodness sakes.
Second— I’m single
for the first time in years. Like I’ve only ever dated one guy.
Third—Shouldn’t I
date multiple men before I find the one? Wasn’t that my first mistake?
Only Joel isn’t giving
up.
He’s determined to
prove age is just a number—
And I’m his number
one.

Review: The Night We Met by Beth Rinyu

I’ve always been three things: Loving daughter, devoted sister, and cynical romantic. Okay, maybe not always the last one, that didn’t happen until my ex-boyfriend cheated on me, and not with just anyone…my best friend.

One year later, and I’m over relationships, only interested in the occasional one-night stand. I don’t fall in love with them, and I don’t expect them to fall in love with me. I won’t be waiting around for their call or stalking their social media—until I discover that one of my little trysts indirectly holds my family’s fate in his hands. So, with a little convincing from my older and much wiser sister, I break my own rules for the sake of my family.

He’s the exact opposite of me: Serious, detached and arrogant. Did I mention that he looks like he should be on a billboard for a cologne ad in the middle of Times Square, or the sexy way he botches up my name in his German accent? Well, he does…but I refuse to relent, remaining committed to my plan. Strictly business, no emotions involved, and nobody will get hurt…until nobody turns into somebody I find myself needing more than I ever thought possible.

What do you do when a one-night stand turns into so much more than you bargained for? And how do you stop one lie that’s getting bigger each time you’re with him from caving everything in around you? I know in the end someone is going to get hurt, but I’m powerless to stop it. And for him…I think I may be willing to have my heart broken all over again.

Review by Jen Skewes

Beth is one of my go to authors.  I don’t need to rad the blurb to know whether or not I am going to read it.  If she writes it, I am reading it.  She never disappoints.  I have read every single one of her books.  Each one different and unique I their own way, and I have loved them all.  My favorite character of her is from the first book that I read of hers.  Dailan O’Maley will almost be my number one.  So when Beth told me that Lukas reminds her of my love, I could not wait to get my hands on this book.  And she was not wrong.  Lukas is a broody, complicated alpha male who I loved.

Emme and Lukas had one amazing night together.  She is trying to move on from her past and the ex who cheated on her with her best friend. He has his walls up so high that t will d=be difficult for anyone to knock them down.  Their night together was supposed to be just that, one night. Until Emme finds out that he is her sister’s boss and her job more or less is in his hands.  That’s when her sister comes up with a plan, one that Emme is reluctant to go slong with, but knows she needs to do this for her sister.  What happens when a one-night stand becomes more? When walls are broken down and secrets are being kept?  When the lies come to the surface, will Emme and Lukas’ relationship be able to survive it all?

I loved watching their relationship develop.  Slowly Lukas’ walls came down and I loved to see how they fell for each other.  In a way I think they both held each other heal. He is broody and angry and so complicated but I loved him.  I loved Emme and felt for her as well.  I felt like she was there for her sister but was so conflicted with what was going on. Her feeling for Lukas becoming real and so much more than she expected.  I felt the connection that they and just waited for that moment when things would become even more complicated.  And when that moment does come, you will not be disappointed. Sometimes you wait for the climax of the book, whether you know it’s coming or not.  And when it does come, it was sort of anti-climatic.  But don’t worry, Beth Rinyu once again delivers!!

As always once I started reading I could not put this book down.  Ms. Rinyu knows how to draw you in, make you love her characters, and fell like you are on pins and needles, waiting for the other shoe to drop, knowing that when it does it will be emotional.  Once again she has proven why I love her writing.  She is an amazingly talented author whose words always manage to touch me in some way.  When I read her books, I am left with a book hangover and characters that I will not forget. And The Night We Met is no different. I cannot wait for the next one.
