Cami is an uber-wealthy socialite with a recent unknown threat placed against her because of who her father is and the enemies he has made. Her father is taking the threat seriously and has hired a 24/7 full-time bodyguard to ensure her safety.
Jake is a man hosting demons for the past 4 years. There is always a hint to his past which is never fully known to us until nearing the end. It definitely keeps you guessing as to what he is hiding! Jake realizes that Cami is not a snobbish model but a person with no hidden agendas. She is friendly to all, and even though her past is tarnished with drugs, she has made huge strides in her life –of course it helps to kick the trash to the curb – i.e. her ex boyfriend. She now knows better than to be associated with him. Jake finds himself attracted to Cami, and now he is not only fighting his past, but trying not to fall in love with the present and the future. He lives with regret and he doesn’t feel he can be worthy of happiness.
This was a good story, but I just couldn’t connect with Jake. I realize he is supposed to come off as harsh and unapproachable, but I never warmed up to his character even when it was his POV and reading how much he loved Cami. The sex is good, though! I tried really, really hard not to sing Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” from the movie “The Bodyguard” while reading this book, and I had a high failure rate. You’re welcome for putting that song in your head.
