Book Blurb:

Sometimes appearances deceive. Take me, for instance. I look like a respectable doctor with his shit together, but the rural Montana mental hospital I work at is actually a sanctuary from my demons. At just thirty-five years old, I’ve already failed on an epic scale. Treating patients at Hawthorne Hill is part of my atonement.

I’ve found peace when a new patient turns me inside out. Allison Cole is a beautiful, haunted survivor who fell into silence after witnessing a murder. But even without words, I’m drawn to her. The closer we get, the more I’m tempted to cross my professional boundaries and give in to my desire.

Soon I find myself in a desperate race to put the pieces of Allison’s silence together. Her life becomes inextricably entwined with mine as I fight to save the second chance I never thought I’d have. I’ll break whatever rules I have to in order to protect this woman who’s been to hell and back. For her, I’ll do harm.

Review by Jen Skewes

I loved this book.  I am a huge fan of Ms. Rothert’s writing, loving everything that I have ever read by her. Come Closer is different from what we usually get from her.  It is an emotional story that is filled with suspense, secrets, betrayal and lies.  And let’s not forget that it is also a forbidden romance between a doctor and his patient.

Allison has witnessed the unthinkable, her sister being murdered right in front of her and somehow Allison managed to escape being killed herself.  Since that tragic day she has stayed silent and is still so traumatized by it that she has been admitted to Hawthorne Hill mental facility.  Her silence I think in a way is her comfort but at the same time can be a problem.  She is the only one who knows what happened that night, and communication is also very important in her recovery. But living your life without your twin sister, the other half of your heart,is not easy and something that Allison isn’t sure that she can do.

Daniel Delgado is a doctor at Hawthorne Hill.  He has his own past that still troubles him.  Living at Hawthorne Hill and being able to take care of his patients is his solace, and also his way of making up for the wrongs that he has done.  When he first meets his new patient Allison there is something about her that he is drawn to. He connects with her on a level that no one else can.  He has this way of opening up to her and truly understanding her. But she is his patient and anything that he feels for her needs to be put aside and he needs to concentrate on his job.

Allison feels something for Daniel even if she knows that she shouldn’t.  She feels cared for and feels the connection that they have.  This isn’t just about the physical attraction between the two of them.  It is so much more than that.  That have an emotional connection and no matter how wrong it may be for them to be together they cannot help how they feel.  But there are still truths that need to come out, pasts that need to be moved on from and the fact that their relationship is taboo.  Can they both overcome all of the obstacles and find happiness with each other?

What I loved about this story was the connection between Daniel and Allison.  I love when you can just feel everything that the characters feel. You get that warm an fuzzy feeling inside whenever they have a moment that makes you smile.  Daniel had this way with Allison and from the very beginning a trust was formed between the two of them.  And I think it was the connection that she felt that helped her to open up to him in ways she never had with anyone else since the night she lost her sister.  They both needed each other in so many ways and they just had this amazing bond between the two of them.  I loved Daniel and how much he cared for her.  But I loved how Ms. Rothert wrote the connection between them.  I don't want to explain what Daniel did to help Allison open up to him but it was the perfect way and that is part of what I loved about the two of them together.  I waited like Allison for those moments between the two of them.  Their connected and how it was brought about is what really made me feel it and love what they had.

Come Closer is an emotional journey that tells the story of two people who are broken in their own way.  It is a journey that is filled with bumps along that way and twists and turns that you never expected.  It has the perfect amount of drama and suspense.  I was completely captured by this story from the moment I started reading it.  I couldn’t stop reading because I needed to know how it would all end and when those twists came there was no way I could put this book down.  Ms. Rothert did a fantastic job with this story.  She knows how to write romance, and hot men like no other, but she also does an amazing job when it comes to Allison’s mental state as well as the lives of others who lived at Hawthorne Hill as well.  Because we do see and meet more people than just Allison and see how they all fit into their story.  It was perfectly written and once again Ms. rothert has done an amazing job.
