Review

5 Star Review by Natasha Gentile

This book is co written by two authors.  I am very very familiar with one, KC Lynn but have yet to read any works from K Langston so I wasn’t sure what to expect.  I didn’t know if they would mesh well.  Let me just say now that these two writers simply intertwined so well that  you couldn’t tell who was writing which part.

I do have to say that I wasn’t sure what to expect with this book.  But while reading it I will say that this book was like it was ripped from the headlines.  Headlines that make us shudder, headlines that make us cringe and headlines that make us ask that is this really happening in the day and age?  The answer is yes, and while  we all sit there saying a person is a person regardless of their age, sex or skin color.  It seems we don’t all have this mentality.
These two touched a subject that very few will actually go.  They touched on both sides, they touched that in the end justice will always prevail.  Here is my journey with Unlawful Justice.

In the peaceful small town of Harmony Falls, Texas, lives schoolteacher Olivia Bradshaw.  Orphaned at a young age Olivia lives with her Pap on his farm.

It’s the place that you read about all the time and always want to visit, it’s a town you sit down thinking to yourself if I ever get to go on a road trip I want to drive through this town grabbing myself some biscuits and gravy.

When an unspeakable crime hits this sleepy town sides are made, relationships are divided.

But when some harbor revenge;  it’s a injustice just waiting to happen.  Leaving Olivia open for their revenge.

I can’t go into detail about his revenge.  I will say that although I wanted to plow through this book because it was so good I just couldn’t read it in one shot.  I literally had to put it down and walk away.  With tears in my eyes, my stomach in my throat, my heart pounding while it breaks and my mind in a haze, I look around thinking that this can’t possible still happen.  I mean we are all just people.

To see the way this courtroom is divided is gut-wrenching.  Right now, it’s about black and white, not right or wrong, and justice is nothing more than an afterthought.

In this town everyone knows everyone but this crimes pushes people to divide and doubt.  To pick sides even though the sides are shaded.

“Why does there have to be sides?  Why does it have to be about color?  Why can’t it be about right and wrong?”
“Because that’s not the world we live in.”
“Well then, I choose peace.”  My breathe hitches as I try to hold back tears.  “I choose love, not hate.”

Deputy Grayson Taylor is a man on a mission. It’s a different mission than what he thought he would be on.  You see he seeks the truth and he seeks justice.  Having been the one to come to Liv’s side there is nothing that he won’t do for her.  He is ready to put himself and his beliefs on the line for her.  For love.  For right.  For wrong.

Hate isn’t something you’re born with, it’s taught.

Grayson is in it to win or better yet to make sure Liv is whole again.  He’ll stop at nothing to do that for her.  Putting him in a harm’s way he didn’t know about.

Seek the truth and you will find justice.

But is anyone truly ready for the truth?  Is anyone truly ready for the secrets that the truth holds?  Is anyone really ready for the truth that they believed or will the past truths be the justice you seek now?

And just like that you sit down and think to yourself in a world filled with so much hate where and what do you do to change that?  You teach, you educate you fight, you love, you live.  And that is what KC Lynn and K Langston did.  They taught us that it is not the color of your skin but the truth that wins.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
In the end we are all just one person, it doesn’t matter the color of your skin, it doesn’t matter if you are male or female, it doesn’t matter if you 10 or 90 it matters about the person you want to be.  It matters in what you teach and show the others around you.  So take a step back and look at the person next to you and wonder why chose hate?  Why chose anything but respect and love for one and other.  It takes but one person to make a difference so why not be that one person?

Excerpt
His gaze softens as he cups the side of my neck. “Jesus, you should never feel insecure. You’re fucking beautiful, Liv, bruises or not. Nothing in the world could ever change that.”
I watch him carefully, his sincerity tearing through my defenses. “You really mean that, don’t you?”

He rears back, the skin between his brows bunching together in deep valleys of confusion. “Of course I do. How could you not know that?”

I shrug. “I don’t know. I guess it’s…” I pause for a moment before deciding to bare it all. “It’s hard for me to believe you still think I’m beautiful despite finding me the way you did.”

Understanding dawns and he quickly shakes his head. “No, not ever. That didn’t change the way I look at you. Yes, it fucking gutted me to see you that way, but not once did I think any less of you.” He pulls me closer while his determined gaze bores into mine. His jaw flexes, the rhythm of his chest growing heavier. “It should have never happened. Nothing so hateful should have ever touched something so beautiful. But make no mistake, Liv, when I look at you, I don’t see the girl I found that day, I see the girl who survived it all. You’re fucking beautiful, inside and out, nothing or no one will ever change that.”

My breath hitches as tears blur my eyes, his words healing my wounded soul. “You make me feel beautiful,” I choke out softly.

“Good, baby, because you are, every inch of you, and don’t ever fucking forget it.” He closes the small space between our mouths, his lips claiming mine in a heated caress as his tongue sweeps in.
