Make It Sweet by Kristen Callihan is now live!
From New York Times bestselling author Kristen Callihan comes a charming, emotional romance about redefining dreams and discovering unlikely love along the way.
Life for Emma isn't good. The world knows her as Princess Anya on Dark Castle, but then her character gets the axe--literally. The cherry on top is finding her boyfriend in bed with another woman. She needs a break, and sanctuary comes in the form of Rosemont, a gorgeous estate in California promising rest and relaxation.
Then she meets the owner's equally gorgeous grandson, ex-hockey player and current recluse Lucian Osmond, and she sees her own pain and yearning reflected in his eyes.
He's charming when he wants to be but also secretive and gruff, with protective walls as thick as Emma's own. Despite a growing attraction, they avoid each other.
But then there's an impromptu nighttime skinny-dip, and Lucian's luscious homemade tarts and cream cakes start arriving at Emma's door, tempting her to taste life again...
In trying to stay apart, they only grow closer--and their broken pieces just might fit together and make them whole.
4 Stars!
Review by Lisa Kane
Emma Maron is the star of a popular cable show, Dark Castle. It's so popular that even the cast has no idea of the longterm direction of the characters. They are strictly on a script by script basis. So imagine her horror at reading that her character, Anya has her head chopped off by her nemesis. Guess it's like Daenerys getting killed at the end. Only the show isn't ending, just Emma's part in it. Worse, she's sworn to secrecy about her character's demise so how is she going to let it be known she's open for more work?
My happy place was no more. My dream role was gone.
If she thinks she's had a bad day, it only gets worse when she comes home to lick her wounds and finds her boyfriend going at it with the waitress from the restaurant they dined at a few nights ago. I hope she didn't leave a big tip for her.
"You're early."
"Funny, I think I arrived just in time."
Emma just wants to get away, she's been filming in Iceland but doesn't want to return to LA where she lives with her cheating boyfriend. So she takes her grandmother's advice and decides to hide out at Amalie Osmond's estate, Rosemont in Montecito, California.
Lucien Osmond, better known as Ozzy has the world by the balls. He's the captain and the center for the Caps in Washington DC. Two time Stanley Cup champion, the golden boy of the team, a gorgeous fiance, Cassandra, he has it all.
Hockey defined me.
The point being hockey was my life. And life was damn good.
That is up until a head injury ends his career. If he plays again he risks permanent damage, lights our forever kind of damage. So he hangs up his skates and retreats to Rosemont to spend time with his grandmother, Mamie.
Somehow Lucien's grandmother gives in to playing driver and picking up Emma at the airport. She mistakes him first for a fan and then as a hired driver. Lucien doesn't want her to know who he is, He's bitter and resentful and just a plain old (even though he's young) grump. He spends his day concocting lavish desserts for his grandmother's estate. He always had a passion for baking, not like his passion for hockey-he lived to play hockey-but he's talented and he likes to see the expression on people's faces when they taste his creations.
After a rocky start, Lucien and Emma do their best to act disinterested around each other. Their chemistry is palpable, but neither one needs this complication. Life is messy enough at the moment without throwing in anymore drama. As if they can choose to sit by and just observe....
Make it Sweet has lots of funny moments, but it is also about adversity and loss. How do you reinvent yourself when the very thing you loved is taken away from you?
Make no mistake, Lucien can be a real ass. Especially when that hole in his heart has been filled with love for a good woman, he just never seems to realize that maybe this is his new life. A life that can be even better then what he had before. (Shakes head at this guy!)
"I'm a hockey player!" My shout echoed in the space and bounced back at me. "It's all I ever was or wanted to be."
One of the best things in this story? The desserts. I'm not sure that I have ever eaten so many desserts while reading a book before. The names, the ingredients. All the details that make you smack your lips and crave that sugary goodness. Ah! I loved reading about them.
Both Lucien and Emma are lost, finding their new way and finding it together makes for a delicious read!
