4 star review by Jen Skewes

Everything seemed to be perfect for Julie.  She was happy and in love with Jase, her boyfriend of over 3 years.  Until one day he completely shattered her heart when she caught him with her best friend.  Julie just picked up and left never saying goodbye to Jase or giving him any opportunity to explain, not that it mattered of course.  But she couldn't escape fast enough.   Julie went on to live her life and eventually found someone else who she felt happy with.  Jase still owned her heart and while she thought that she was happy with Dean, she didn't love him like a wife should and certainly didn't love him like she loved Jase.  But she soon learned that Dean was not the man she thought he was.  She eventually breaks free from Dean and heads back home after nine years of being gone.  Nine years since she has seen Jase.  And now she must face him after all this time, which makes her nervous, especially since she has a secret that she has been hiding.

Jase lost the only girl that he has ever loved. Julie was everything to him and the woman that he was going to spend the rest of his life with.  Until he messed up when he decided that sex with her best friend was more important than her.  It's been nine years since Julie left.  And over those nine years Jase has drowned his sorrows in whiskey and woman.   Half the time he is drunk and can't even remember who he was with the night before.  He never got over losing Julie and has never stopped loving her.  Now that Julie is back he vows to get her back, to make her forgive him and prove to her that he loves her.  Julie has her own secret that she has been keeping from him which doesn't go over too well with Jase.  But he realizes if he wants Julie back he needs to let it go and prove to her that he can be the man she deserves.  Julie still loves Jase and never stopped, but is that enough?  Will she be able to trust him again and give him a second chance?

When we first meet Jase in the prologue I honestly wasn't sure how I felt about him.  It wasn't just because he cheated, I could get over that, but he seemed like a complete jerk.  I won't give anything away but I wasn't sure if he would be able to redeem himself.  But I am happy to say I was completely wrong.  Jase never stopped loving Julie and from the minute she comes back he gives up his addiction to whiskey and woman and sets out to prove his love.  And to prove to her that he is still the amazing man she once loved.  Deep down Jase is a really good guy who is caring and loving and protective of Julie.  But alcohol and the loss of his mother got in his way and caused him to screw up big time.  Not really the best excuse but I think as the story goes on and secrets come out you begin to understand a little more of what happened and see that Jase really isn't the jerk you thought he was.  I fell in love with him.  I loved him for how he fought for Julie and how amazing he was with her and Jenny.

I enjoyed Julie's character.  She was strong and tried very hard to resist Jase.  She wasn't sure if she could trust him after all these years.  But she saw how hard he was trying and how dedicated he was to her.  She loved him and at some point her heart won the fight that it was having with her brain.  Their journey wasn't an easy one.  People from both of their pasts will go to whatever lengths necessary to keep them apart.  There is still the issue of trust that comes into play and no matter how much they love each other and how much they are meant to be together, Jase needs to prove that he deserves Julie's heart.

Whiskey Lullaby was a wonderful read and at times very emotional. It is one of those books that grabbed me right from the start.  The prologue got me and I needed to know if Jase and Julie would meet again and get their second chance and was Jase really the jerk that he seemed to be.  My heart broke at times for Julie.  She seemed to get hurt over and over, both physically and emotionally.  But she held on strong.  She had an amazing support team in her sister-in-law who we see had her own issues with Dean and I hope to learn more about that in the next book.  Julie also had Jase's brothers and father and her family who were so supportive and loving and simply amazing.  I love Julie and Jase's story.  Their journey wasn't an easy one, trust issues and their past got in the way at times.  But there was no doubt how much they loved each other and how much they belonged together.  Whiskey Lullaby is a story of love, betrayal, and second chances.  Wonderful job by Ms. Minton and Ms. Martens.
