Review: Just Human and Still Human by Kerry Heavens

Meet Liv and Danny...

Liv loves Danny. She knows she loves him more than he loves her, so she lets him go without a fight when his parents make him move back to America. She knows she will never love anyone like she loved him, but she has to move on.

Danny loves Liv. He knows he loves her more than she loves him, because she does nothing to get him to stay, so he goes quietly when his parents leave the UK. He knows he will never love anyone like he loved her, but he has to move on.

Twelve years on, they have made a good job of pretending, they may have almost forgotten. But when they get in touch via Facebook, it seems that it is all still there.

They quickly find that they are intensely compatible in ways they hadn’t even begun to explore before they were forced apart.

Can they put aside their fears and give it a go? Or will deep rooted doubts and insecurities tear them apart?

“You have 1 new message from Danny Morgan.”

Danny Morgan…Liv has tried to forget that name for 12 years and now she is thrust back into her memories of her first true love with this notification from Facebook.

Liv and Danny were inseparable growing up in England.  Their friendship evolved into all the firsts that you want to treasure.   They were each other’s first kiss, first time, and first love.  They were also each other’s first in something you don’t want to remember…heartbreak.    Liv had so much love for Danny but when the time came for him to move to America with his parents she had to let him go.

Twelve years ago when Danny was getting ready to leave for America, he had a plan that included staying with Liv.  Liv had a plan that included going to UCLA to be with Danny in California.  Neither one of them were able to tell the other of their plans because they both felt the other didn’t feel the same way and was using the move to distance themselves and cut ties.  Liv still feels the sting from Danny leaving her and taking a piece of her heart with him.  She has never been able to forget him.

4 Star Review by Jen Hagen

Liv still remains in England, is a workaholic and the proud owner of a restaurant/bar.   Liv has just walked in on her current boyfriend of four years and best friend making out with her shirt off and his pants open.   She can now add him to her short list of relationships gone bad.

Danny is a successful computer software entrepreneur.  He locks himself up in his apartment and focuses on his projects.   He has never been in a long-term relationship and he harbors the love for the one he let go.  He usually takes the safe way in his life, but just this once he decides to take a risk and contact her.

I’ve never felt so close to anyone.  I know now, I’ve never let anyone but her in. —Danny

Liv feels the same way:  Looking back, and comparing that innocent love to my relationships since, it still feels like the only real love I’ve ever experience.

Liv and Danny begin communicating to each other through Facebook messages.  Herein lies their second chance at true love.  Danny is willing to take the risk at rekindling their flame and flies 5000 miles to be with her.  Liv still guards her heart for fear of losing herself to Danny if he should leave and because her previous relationships have ended in a bad way.

“I guess my fear is, if I let myself love you, you might turn out to be just human.  And if you’re just human, you could easily hurt me too.”

Is Danny just human?  Does he unintentionally hurt her, or does the doubt that Danny had 12 years ago when she pushed him away resurface and make him question if she really does love him as much as he loves her?

We hear both Liv and Danny’s point of view throughout the book.  I always enjoy being able to hear from the other side as there really are two sides to every story.   This ends on a cliffhanger, but the sequel Still Human has already been released.  You might as well purchase it at the same time so that you can jump right back into their lives.

Danny and Liv are back...

Danny loves Liv. He knows he loves her more than she loves him because she ran without a word when she saw their future mapped out before her. He knows he will never love anyone like he loved her and this time he doesn’t think he can move on.

Liv loves Danny. She knows she loves him more than he loves her because he broke her heart in the worst possible way, right when things were falling into place. She knows she will never love anyone like she loves him and this time she doesn’t think she can move on.

They needed a second chance because they just weren’t ready for their first, but when events changed everything between them, they discovered they were just human after all. Now Liv and Danny have to find a way to survive being hurt by each other.

They doubted, they underestimated and they did believe the worst, but only because they were too young the first time and too vulnerable the second time. But now they have changed and if they are not the same, surely things can only turn out differently?

4 Star Review by Jen Hagen

How many chances do you give love?  One?...Two?...or is third time a charm?  Liv and Danny loved each other when they were kids but never voiced it to each other.  Danny had a ring ready to give to Liv before he left for America 12 years ago but because of Liv’s insistence that he go and leave her in England, he felt his love was not being reciprocated.  Now he has another ring ready to give her and is going to ask her to be his wife, but she is nowhere to be found.  She ran…but not for the reason that Danny thinks.  He is oblivious to the fact of what she saw and he believes she ran because she wasn’t ready for his love.

Liv has fled back to her home country, England, and the safety net of her friends and work after seeing what she thought was Danny being unfaithful to her.   She is wallowing in the grief thinking that once again Danny didn’t love her.

The fact that he didn’t follow me is both a relief and a crushing disappointment.  I don’t want to see him or listen to anything he has to say, but he hasn’t even tried to fight for us…again.

These two need to talk to each other and get their facts straight!  Liv always has to be in control and it is going to be on her terms if and when they speak.  Danny tries, and he tries very hard to speak to her and get her to understand, but how can he plead his case when she has shut off her phone and won’t check her emails?  He can only hope that she will finally concede to read an email or listen to his many messages.

I’m sorry I didn’t chase you…I’m just sorry.  I thought you left because you didn’t love me.  I was devastated.  I realize now why you left and, although I wish you thought more of me, I know that you not trusting me is totally my fault.”

Unfortunately Danny has planted a small seed of mistrust in Liv’s head and it is going to take a long time to get Liv’s armor down to let him back into her life.  I felt sorry for Danny.  There were many times I wanted to yell at Liv and tell her to forgive Danny…he was trying so hard to get through to her and let her know how much he loved her.   A lesser man would have given up and moved on, but this was his true love and he wasn’t going to let her slip through his fingers again.  Danny is a true treasure to hold.  Danny fights a long hard battle and at times it seems like it is not a worthwhile fight.

“Go back to your life Danny and I’ll go back to mine.”

It’s a good thing Danny loves her as much as he does, because I would have taken her advice and left her alone.   Danny is good with his words and actions getting her to believe and trust in him again.  Sometimes I felt that Liv was being selfish by not acknowledging that Danny was hurt also by her running.

You told me once that you were afraid I would turn out to be just human and that I would hurt you.  I told you that I am just human and that I could be hurt just as easily.”

I like how the story continued to be told in both points of view.  There is also a secondary storyline occurring that brought out the emotional side of me and my eyes were wet with tears.   Liv and Danny have a tight circle of friends and are willing to do anything to help the ones they love.  I enjoyed this series!
