If faced with your worst fear, what
would you do? Would you run or would you fight?
Camryn Hamilton
is a fighter.
A thirty-something mother of two, Camryn appears to have it
all: a husband, plenty of money, and children she adores. When she returns home to spend Christmas with
her family, her perfect world she has created begins to crumble, thrusting her
face to face with the only man who truly knows her.
Holden Patrick
will fight harder.
A powerful, handsome attorney, Holden left town after his
adoptive parents’ death. In his time
away he almost managed to forget the girl who ran away with his heart. At least until a turn of fate brought him
back to Mantoloking, and back to Camryn.
But are they
willing to fight for each other?
Faced with a tragic past that they both wanted to forget,
they struggle to protect their hearts from being broken again. Will their love be enough to get them through
another tragedy, or will they close themselves off and run away again?
3.5 Star review by Lisa Kane
Camryn and
Holden transitioned from best friends to boyfriend/girlfriend in her sophomore
year. He was adopted in the second grade, having suffered horrible abuse in
other foster homes. Neighbors, they were always in each other’s company. But
something happened to Cam after she had too much to drink and she changed. She
was broken, empty, ashamed. She wouldn’t open up to anyone, and pushed her
family and Holden away. After a while Holden realized he could never get
through to her and he left to go away to college.
Camryn kept
her guard up in all her relationships. She met Marcus, a man she was attracted
to, who was safe and uncomplicated. They lived together for three years when
Holden came back for his parents’ funeral. Cam and Holden reconnect in a moment
of shared pain and it turns to passion. The next morning, Holden is gone and
left a note.
I am sorry if I hurt
you by leaving without saying goodbye, but you know I was never good at those.
I love you too much to do this to you. I can’t love you the way you deserve to
be loved. You deserve someone who isn’t selfish and damaged like me. You
deserve the world, Cam. You deserve the fucking fairy tale, and I can’t give
that to you.
Cam vows to
never fall for Holden again! Fast forward six years and she and Marcus are
married and have two little girls, Sophie and Ellie. Marcus seems out of sorts.
It’s Christmas Eve’, the whole family is at her parents and he confesses to Cam
that maybe they should cut their losses with their marriage and end things now.
That he wants to be someone’s epic love and he knows that he isn’t that for
Cam. When Cam shows disbelief, he back paddles and says he was just rambling.
Cam goes outside for a walk and can’t believe it when Holden walks toward her
dad’s house. He bought his parents’ old house and he is moving back. Cam has
heard from him over the years, congrats on her marriage, her kids, etc. nothing
serious. But they both feel the pull between them.
Months
later, it’s the 4th of July and Marcus lowers the boom, he is filing
for divorce (what is with this guy and bad news on holidays!) Cam has suspected
he is having an affair, but has been living in denial. With her friends and
Holden’s help she will get through this. Holden is dating a work colleague and
Cam tells herself she is happy for them. Sure she is. It’s impossible for these
two to spend time together and not feel the same connection they always shared.
I smile and plug my
phone into the car adapter and push play. “Dust to Dust” by the Civil Wars
comes on, and my smile grows to an all-out laugh. It is as if the music gods
are trying to tell me to forgive Holden and finally let him into my heart. I
really do love him.
Cam has
reason to be cautious; she has been hurt in the past from Holden. And a ghost
from her past is back, terrifying her once again. This is where the book turned
into a suspense novel. Someone is out to hurt Cam and she honestly doesn’t know
why.
I enjoyed
this novel, although it seemed to drag a little with the push and pull of
between Cam and Holden. Marcus, Cam’s husband deserved to be throat punched a
time or two. But the story concluded nicely and it was an easy read.
“We were both broken,
Camryn, and I know that scares you. But we can still have the fairy tale. You
have been the glue that helped put my life back together. Even when we weren’t
together, you were always in my heart.”
