Title: Among the Echoes
Author: Aly Martinez
Publication Date: July 31, 2014
Genre: Erotic Suspense
My name was Dr. Erica Hill. I was a victim, then a witness, and then I ceased to exist altogether.
I may still be breathing, but stripped of my identity, I have long since stopped living. I am invisible, and my life depends on my ability to stay in the shadows.
But he sees me.
Slate Andrews is the embodiment of everything I have been taught to avoid. He’s rich and famous, and one image of him with a woman would earn millions for any paparazzi lucky enough to snap it. He has vowed to protect me with his life, yet he exposes me with his every breath. I should be stronger and walk away. I should disappear. But I’m terrified he would come after me.
I’m on the run, determined not to take him down with me but absolutely unable to let him go.
My name is Riley Peterson…at least for today.

4.25 Star Review by Jen Hagen
Erica is no longer Erica…she is now Riley and has been on
the run for over 3 years alongside Leo.
They are kept under the witness protection program in order to
survive. Erica was once an ER physician;
now she is a file clerk. She and Leo are
stuck in purgatory. They can’t go back
to their old lives as that would be placing a big red dot on their foreheads,
and they can’t move forward because then their secret would be revealed and
more people’s lives would be in danger. Why are they in danger? Riley was kidnapped and raped while Leo saved
her from the wrong people. Their
testimony has placed a death sentence on their lives, so Leo and Riley continue
their daily routines with mundane jobs, keeping everybody at a distance,
looking over their shoulder, and rating their days according to bad 80’s
movies. They are always ready to leave
their current lives at the drop of a dime if their security has been breached
and take up a new name in a new location.
Their current
living arrangement is in an apartment complex that is owned by Slate Andrews –
the heavyweight boxing champion of the world two years running. Slate likes to escape his celebrity lifestyle
and become a nobody in his apartment. Shortly
after arriving at his secluded run- down apartment he has a chance meeting with
his next door neighbor, and later when Riley feels a loss of security she runs
towards Slate’s arms. There is
definitely an attraction between the two but Riley cannot allow herself to feel
anything other than the fear she has been accustomed to and she does not want
to put Slate’s life in danger by being associated with her. It should be noted that Slate has kept his
athletic status anonymous from her and Riley believes that Slate is an “amateur
boxer down on his luck.” Being
photographed with a celebrity would certainly hinder Erica’s attempts at
staying hidden.
Slate wants Riley…Riley wants Slate…Leo wants Riley to
finally have a semblance of her normal life.
Slate knows that Riley is hiding back huge parts of her life.
“I don’t know who
you truly are, Riley, but tiny flashes of that woman whisper around the room
between us. I will find the real you
among the echoes – and I will make her mine.”
Eventually Slate will have to tell her the truth about
his identity and where they go from there depends on Riley either taking a
chance with Slate or staying safe within her apartment walls. Riley wants so bad to be free from her past
and Leo may just have a plan, but it may cost him everything he has including
his life. He is willing to do this to
give Riley back her life.
Where he is going
and why are still a mystery, but as I look into his eyes, I know that he has
absolutely no plans of returning.
I almost didn’t read this book…I was asked if I wanted
somebody else to review it as my list was long.
Since I had read the author’s previous books in the Changing Course
series, I really wanted to read this book as I could be a good judge of her stories.
I knew if I passed it along to somebody
else it would fall along my wayside, never to be read. I am so glad I held firm in wanting to read
this. Ms. Martinez tells a love story
while adding a level of mystery/suspense to it that always throws a twist into
the plot. The last sentence in the book gave me
goosebumps and allowed me a chance to fist pump and say “YES!”. For that I give the book 5 stars because how
often do you get that shock factor??
Goosebumps…literally goosebumps and a dropped jaw. It’s amazing how an author can weave an old
character into a new story. I’m so
excited for the next book!! Will you
need to read the two books in the Changing Course series to be excited about
this character crossover? No, I fully
expect Ms. Martinez to explain the identity of this character in the new book
and not leave out any holes in the backstory.
