4.5  Star Review by Lisa Kane

When Luke Nichols was a kid his mom's best friend, Emily Wells and her family moved next door. They had a little girl, Phoebe, and she was beautiful. He wondered what was wrong with her hair, it was a beautiful shade of yellow but it was in little tufts on her head. She told him it was because she had leukemia and it had fallen out. But she was better now. He didn't know what that was, but she was nice. They became inseparable. She loved ballet and he nicknamed her his Twinkle Toes. He was her protector.

They remained close in spite of their 3 year age difference. But then when Luke was a senior on the way to his prom, it dawned on Phoebe like a ton of bricks that he was moving on from her. She thought she would be going to his senior prom but he told her she was too young; he would take her to hers if she didn't have a date for it. She knew he was having sex with the girl he was dating and the hope she had held on to for the last few years died that night. She closed herself off to him and was determined to make a life without being so dependent on him. He was leaving to go to college anyway.

I want the elusive boy who vanished from my life, and no matter how many times I tell myself to move on, I never do.
Luke got totally immersed in being away at school. Little by little he and Phoebe drifted apart. Girls were fun, and his studies were taking a lot more attention than he wanted. School was always hard for him, as he was dyslexic and he couldn't let himself fail. He wanted to do his own thing, not have to come home a failure and sell real estate with his dad.

Phoebe's mom dreamed of her dancing on the stage with a big ballet company. Phoebe wanted to study ballet but stay in her own town. She wanted to teach dance and live a simple life. On the night of her prom she went stag with her girlfriends. Luke showed up to see her off. What should have been a wonderful night changed her life forever. When she got home, Luke was the one to tell her that the unthinkable had happened. Luke is now her legal guardian.

I break like I never have. No pretty tears, but sobs pulled from the pit of my stomach; so hard and wracking I can't even catch my breath. I fucking hate God right now. I don't even feel guilty about it.

Luke and Phoebe's relationship strengthened from that point on-he became everything to her, including her lover. But life has a way of throwing vicious curve balls when you least expect it. Phoebe's health will once again be threatened. On top of that, Luke must make a decision that may save her life but will cause him to lose her. My heart broke; I had tears running down my face at this part.  Big, ugly, snotty ones.

Phoebe just can not deal with the consequences of Luke's decision and she sets things in motion to legally end his involvement in her life. He is shattered and desperate but he can't change any of it.

"I will never forgive you, Luke. I  don't care what your reasons are."

Four years go by and they are filled with life changing events for both Phoebe and Luke. Both go through the motions of living their lives, but without the other. Sometimes in order to be together people have to first be apart. The kind of love that this couple had for each other doesn't just end because they are no longer together. Fate and luck play a big part in their story and once again their paths will cross. Will their past haunt them or can they move on from the things that separated them before and find forgiveness?

"You have never been without my love and long after my heart stops beating, you will still be inside it."
